If you go to this NASA web site you can get a web app that lets you follow the progress of the Curiosity Rover:

http://eyes.nasa.gov/index.html

It has a live mode where you can see all the current stats (speed, distance, altitude) and also a preview mode where you can see what hopefully will happen later tonight.

Earth Occultation is supposed to occur roughly a minute and 59 seconds before touchdown. As best I can tell it looks like the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter will be close to right overhead. It’d be neat if it really is able to film the landing.

Not EST. I have no idea what time zone NASA has their schedule aligned to... Sheesh.

I suppose it will happen when it happens and I will find out when I find out.

Unfortunately, someone at NASA upgraded it to a newer rev of the Unity player, and it requires some kernel functions that aren’t in Windows 2000.

I’m using the extended Win2k kernel from http://www.msfn.org and it still can’t handle it.

Finally found that NASA TV times were in local time. I assume they have a script snippet that does the calcs for offset from GMT.

So 40 minutes or so, and we should see live coverage on NASA TV.

Maybe.

“Ok, after watching the video on Space.com, I’m not too confident this is going to work out.

It is like trying to land a bullet in space on a banana running at full speed without bruising the skin.”
*************************************************************
Not to worry—they had some VERY COMPETENT conservative/Republican engineers and IT programmer/developers involved in the nitty-gritty details. So it has a reasonable chance of succeeding.

And, if it does succeed, big time props will be due for all involved. I guess NASA doesn’t yet have ALL of its staff and contractors dedicated to promoting belief in the global warming cult and increasing Muslim self-esteem.

I “cut the beam” 18 months ago, so I’ll be watching the live feed from NASA.

I’m still heartsick the Obamination cancelled the Constellation program, but I desperately hope Curiosity lands in one piece. It’s just amazing and the engineers looked like kids in the candy store.

Now if we can all survive those 14 minutes of hurry up and wait! :)

There was a second "space dog" (her name escapes me) who was safely returned to Earth. She lived long enough after returning to be bred and bear a litter of perfectly normal puppies.

Two dogs were launched together and returned on Aug. 19, 1960. They were called Belka and Strelka. Puppies were Strelka's.

The Soviets didn’t hold dogs in high reguard like we did/do.

That’s why we sent chimps instead.

“Oleg Gazenko, one of the scientists responsible for sending Laika into space, expressed regret for allowing her to die:

“Work with animals is a source of suffering to all of us. We treat them like babies who cannot speak. The more time passes, the more I’m sorry about it. We shouldn’t have done it... We did not learn enough from this mission to justify the death of the dog.”

I wonder if the Sun looks larger on Mars’ horizon than it does when it’s not on the horizon, due to atmospheric distortion — similar to what we see on Earth when the Moon or Sun is on the horizon?

90 minutes to the landing. Live coverage actually starting.

11:27 Local True Solar Time at the landing site. Solar elevation 78.0 degrees. Good viewing for the cameras with an overhead sun. Earth is about 15 degrees north and 45? degrees west in the sky.

Warning: math has been done by a cook.

I believe that’s entirely an illusion (psycho-sensory distortion). Apparent size as you perceive it is bigger near the horizon but actual angle subtended is slightly less. There is no actual magnification at all. Still, it would be interesting to see if the illusion happens on Mars as well (will have to arrange a trip).

The Martians will see the mess, get real mad that we are throwing our trash in their front yard . . .

and voila! Mars attacks!

Found this at Space.com:

Curiosity Has a Laser (Pew, pew, pew!)

For sheer coolness, it's tough to beat ChemCam. This instrument will fire a laser at Martian rocks from up to 30 feet (9 meters) away and analyze the composition of the vaporized bits.

ChemCam will thus enable Curiosity to study rocks that are out of reach of its flexible robotic arm. It will also help the mission team determine from afar whether or not they want to send the rover over to investigate a particular landform.

ChemCam is composed of several different parts. The laser sits on Curiosity's mast, along with a camera and a small telescope. Three spectrographs sit in the rover's body, connected to the mast components by fiber optics. The spectrographs will analyze the light emitted by excited electrons in the vaporized rock samples.

Read more about the other instruments onboard Curiosity at Space.com
