GM exec: 100, 200 miles on a charge may be coming

Detroit - A small battery company backed by General Motors is working on breakthrough technology that could power an electric car 100 or even 200 miles on a single charge in the next two-to-four years, GM's CEO said Thursday. Speaking at an employee meeting, CEO Dan Akerson said the company, Newark, Calif.-based Envia Systems, has made a huge breakthrough in the amount of energy a lithium-ion battery can hold. GM is sure that the battery will be able to take a car 100 miles within a couple of years, he said. It could be double that with some luck, he

Hey, its great news. Let them develop this technology on their own dime, sell the cars without Gov’t help or interference, and keep the money they make. At least, that’s how it should work.

The Nissan Leaf already gets 100 miles on a charge. And the Tesla Model S gets 200 miles on a charge.

These are all based on daylight, 70 degree day, no ac and new battery. The electric car will always be a limited application vehicle..apply cold, heat and age and they are limited to short range operations.
Some of the golf cart users here in our neighborhood(not a gated community) have switched back to mini-cars and smart cars. Once they got hit with aging batteries and replacement costs..they aren’t that cheap anymore.

Tesla S range is 125 miles for the base model based on EPA testing, but yeah, we already have electric cars with such range.

Let them develop this technology on their own dime

That's the problem. It was $62 billion worth of our dimes that GM has taken. They screwed the bondholders, the pensioners, the dealers, and even the employees (building foreign plants). The stock is horrid, they have NOT bounced back and are still pushing this technology with absolutely no proof that they can get this mileage.

Maybe they will find someone to produce the battery. Maybe not. Meanwhile the administration is shutting down coal mining and coal fired power plants by the dozens. Even they find the battery tech, it will STILL cost more than gasoline. It is STILL is dirtier than gasoline. We are all paying through the nose while these filthy liars have a party on our time and dime. It stinks. Everybody knows it stinks too.

No, 35 miles was claimed. The Leaf claimed 100 miles. It doesn't matter if the Volt could be made to last 100 or 200 miles on a charge. It still can't haul worth crap. Throw 4 pieces of loaded luggage and a few passengers in, or other goods you want to transport. Maybe you would get 5 miles down the road (and certainly not uphill).

I would only take an electric vehicle if it came with a constant recharge system built in like a “beta cell”. Anything else is just screwing around.

Simple truth is that gasoline is the most efficient fuel source for millions of drivers, the science refined and proven for over a century. This, the lib idiots ignore. I think another technology, like using piss to power cars, will come into play as a better solution rather than battery driven cars. Piss we got lots of, not so much electricity.

More accurately IMHO: Everybody with a clue knows it stinks too.

Unfortunately, that excludes a significant part of the electorate.

Not for long, depends on a lot of factors and battery age. Lots of leaf folks are unhappy at how fast the batteries have lost their ability to hold a charge.

Iirc they initially claimed 40 miles, because they were throwing that around for commuters who mostly drove less than 20 miles to work.

Better off with a hybrid right now. If batteries fail still have an engine.

What needs to be made is a hybrid that can be used as a hybrid, or only battery, or only gas, three different options depending.
