In accepting the vice presidential spot on the Republican ticket, Wisconsin Representative Paul Ryan said, "America is more than just a place ... it's an idea ... Our rights come from nature and God, not government."
That single remark is simple yet profound. That single remark separates those who embrace the tumultuous uncertainties of freedom from those who seek security at the expense of individual liberty. That single remark is what divides the Founder's philosophy of limited government from the Progressive project's march toward authoritarian dictatorship. That single remark differentiates two stark visions of man in relation to his creator and his fellow man.
The remark also pays homage to two great men: John Locke and Thomas Jefferson. "To understand political power right," wrote Locke, "and derive it from it's original, we must consider what state all men are naturally in, and that is, a state of perfect freedom to order their actions, and dispose of their possessions, and persons as they think fit, with the bounds of the law of nature, without asking leave, or depending on the will of any other man."
Locke added, "The people cannot delegate to government the power to do anything which would be unlawful for they to do themselves."
In the Declaration of Independence, Jefferson mirrors Locke's assertions by stating that the American people should "assume among the powers of the Earth, the separate and equal station to which the laws of nature and of nature's God entitle them." He then declares the "causes which impel them to the separation" from Britain:
"We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal and endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights: That among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness; that to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed."
Contrary to its name, "Progressivism" has its roots in the philosophy of Thomas Hobbs, the 17th century contemporary of John Locke. Hobbs believed man's evil passions embroils him in a perpetual "war of all against all."
"In such a condition," writes Hobbs, "there is no place for industry; because the fruit thereof is uncertain; and consequently no culture of the earth; no navigation, nor use of commodities that may be imported by sea; no commodious building; no instruments of moving, and removing, such things as require much force; no knowledge of the face of the Earth; no account of time, not arts; no letters; no society; and which is worst of all, continual fear, and danger of violent death; and the life of a man solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short."
Notice that Hobbs, like President Obama, believes civilization is unattainable without big government.
Hobbs' solution was for a people to cede their individual sovereignty to an all-powerful monarch (community organizer?), what Hobbs calls the "great leviathan," no matter how arbitrary and oppressive his or her rule may be, for the sake of "peace at home and mutual aid against their enemies abroad."
Most chilling of all, Hobbs writes, "For by this authority, given him by every particular man in the commonwealth, he hath the use of so much power and strength conferred on him, that by terror thereof, he is enabled to perform the wills of them all."
Ah, yes ... terror - the whip of force. For all their talk of compassion, Progressives require royal force and its ever-present companion, terror, to achieve their desired ends.
President Obama and his media supporters say the 2012 election is a contest between an old and "new" vision for America. That, of course, is a lie.
"Experience hath shown," wrote Jefferson in back 1778, "that even under the best forms of government those entrusted with power have, in time, and by slow operations, perverted it into tyranny."
"It is the eternal struggle between two principles, right and wrong, throughout the world," said Abraham Lincoln in 1858, "...Whether from the mouth of a king, who seeks to bestride the people of his own nation and live by the fruit of their labor, or from one race of men as an apology for enslaving another race, it is the same tyrannical principle."
Saul Alinsky, the wellspring of inspiration for a Chicago community-organizer, penned a dedication in his classic book "Rules for Radicals": "Lest we forget at least an over-the-shoulder acknowledgment to the very first radical, from all our legends, mythology, and history... the first radical known to man who rebelled against the establishment and did it so effectively that he at least won his own kingdom - Lucifer."
Whether viewed as myth or taken as gospel, the object of Alinsky's admiration is at war with the truth, working to upset the natural, moral order of the universe. Alinsky's leader, we must remember, is known for being a "murderer and the father of lies."
Vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan is to be commended for acknowledging the forgotten source of our liberty and rejecting the counterfeit liberator of Alinsky and Obama - the lying, murderous leviathan of big government.

that was the most touching moment of the announcement yesterday morning.

Well: That certainly is diametrically opposed to what Obama Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid believes.
But it isn’t bad enough that Democrats believe Government is god, they try to shove it down our throats.
When I watched yesterday morning (here), there appeared to be between six and eight kids up there, all within a few years of each other in age.
I couldn’t help but notice and think, there is hope for the future after all.

Great post and great article. I think these people are on to something big. The same thing that switched me over from Democratic to Republican voting from 1984 on.
