GOP looks to distinguish Romney from Ryan budget
WRAL ^ | August 12, 2012 | KASIE HUNT

MOORESVILLE, N.C. — Mitt Romney's campaign sought to put some distance Sunday between the presidential candidate and his new running mate's controversial budget proposals, even as Paul Ryan's selection energized Republican voters and Romney himself.

But President Barack Obama's campaign made clear they planned to aggressively cast Ryan's budget as outside the mainstream — and argue that Romney now owns that plan, too.

"Gov. Romney is at the top of the ticket. And Governor Romney's vision for the country is something that Congressman Ryan supports," Romney spokesman Kevin Madden said Sunday during a briefing for reporters.

Ed Gillespie, a senior adviser to the Republican campaign, said Romney would have signed Ryan's budget if landed on his desk as president. But he emphasized that as president Romney would "be putting forward his own budget."

That didn’t take long. I’m on line for a Romney Ryan rally in st Augustine right now, although we just learned that Ryan won’t be here. But he’s the one everyone wants to see and hear and the one they’re enthusiastic about, so Romney better be careful about distancing himself,

If Romney makes the right move — which is unclear at this point — he will EMBRACE Ryan’s budget proposals, not distance himself from them.

If Ryan turns out to be just a figurehead who was selected just to get votes for Romney and stir up the base, voters will quickly figure that out and turn away, IMHO.

Romney was being thrashed, “felon”, “tax cheat”, “murderer”, his message drowned out, before he picked Ryan. Millard better figure out real fast exactly from where his toast is getting it’s butter.

And history repeats it’s self just 4 short years later...

I’m not sure why anyone expected Willard to actually ‘hold’ to a position for more than 24 hours. He picks Ryan, but then distances himself from Ryan’s views?

Not unexpected. But disheartening.

RE :” Mitt Romney's campaign sought to put some distance Sunday between the presidential candidate and his new running mate's controversial budget proposals, even as Paul Ryan's selection energized Republican voters and Romney himself.......
As chairman of the House Budget Committee, Ryan is the primary author of conservative tax and spending blueprints that the tea party-infused Republican majority approved over vigorous Democratic opposition in 2011 and again in 2012.
They envision transforming Medicare into a program in which future seniors would receive government checks that they could use to purchase health insurance. Under the current program, the government directly pays doctors, hospitals and other health care providers.
Ryan and other supporters say the change is needed to prevent the program from financial calamity. Critics argue it would impose ever-increasing costs on seniors.

Blueprints?? These were not legislation bills that they had House Republicsn vote for but more like symbolic loyalty bills.

Ryan later followed up with a less politically toxic plan Ryan-Wyden Medicare Plan that allows future seniors to choose between traditional medicare and other options.

What is the Romney-Ryan proposal anyway and how does it differ from the Ryan and Ryan-Wyden plans?

Don’t let the media play this game. Romney didn’t distinguish himself from Ryan, he just repeated his position that while he finds a lot to admire in Ryan’s budget, it isn’t his. He has said that all along. This is clearly media pot-stirring. Why the Hell would Romney put Ryan on the ticket only to spend the next month “distinguishing” himself from Ryan? Don’t fall for the media’s attempt to create discord in Republican ranks.

” Don’t let the media play this game.”

Great point. The headline DID have my blood pumping a little faster...until I realized the article came from AP/WRAL. Maybe NCjim can clarify, but that area of NC is a hotbed of the liberal/leftist persuasion. I know I wouldn’t pay any attention to the article if it came out in the Charlotte Observer...another leftwing rag.

I am not surprised at all.

Willard wanted a left of center running mate.

His handlers know Willard needs the right and threw the right a bone with the Ryan pick.

History repeats it’s self again.

I just hope for the sake of our country the outcome of this race is different.

Raleigh certainly has its fair share of libs but WRAL’s viewing area includes Chapel Hill which is 99 44/100s per cent lib.
