“Legitimate rape” became a Twitter trending topic in the U.S. this afternoon after liberal blog Talking Points Memo posted a video of Rep. Todd Akin claiming that victims of “legitimate rape” are unlikely to become pregnant.

When women who can become pregnant are forcibly raped very few do become pregnant compared to women who engage in consensual sex. Now I could sit here and cite numbers and stats til I go blue in the face and you will disparage me the entire time so go do your own research.
I actually saw Akin speak at the end of the day at a defense industry conference a couple years ago - even though I largely agreed with his content, for some reason he struck me as a rambling idiot and I left early.
This one is just the same as an unrecoverable stall in an airplane - you either bail out or hit the ground.
GOP is extremely fortunate that this happened before any possibility of campaign appearances where Romney or Ryan appeared with Akin.

I agree that he made a dumb comment, but the conventional wisdom is that abortion is a losing issue for us. It’s not!
Missouri is one of the more pro-life states in America. Almost decisively so. He’s obviously not the best speaker out there ,and I’m sure his people will tell him to be more careful
The reason he’s being attacked is because he said one of the dumbest things (outside of Joe Biden) that any major candidate has said in quite some time.
Not only is this guy going to blow his lead with this statement but this may reverberate among the national press and other Dem candidates for days painting all Republican candidates with the statement.You know the press is going to ask Romney if he agrees with the candidate’s “legitimate rape” comment to try to tether him to it. We do not need Republican candidates supplying the DNC with fodder for their war on women narrative grist mill.
One of the senses of the word "legitimate" is "established (vs. unestablished), constituted".
Perhaps you didn't know that. I think that logic and common sense would dictate that the word ought to be understood in that sense, in light of the context in which it was used, but Charles Jaco style red-shirts, et al are not interested in logic and common sense. They have an agenda, which is the antithesis of what Todd Akin embodies.
What I would like to know from those here calling Todd Akin an idiot and stupid is, just how do logic and common sense dictate the exclusion of an accepted meaning or sense of a word?

You seem to have a sexual based bias. I know a man who was raped as an adult and numerous men who were raped as boys.

Todd Akin, RINO candidate for US Senate, bought and paid for by Democrat Senator Claire McCaskill.
By all accounts, Akin is NOT a RINO. In fact, he’s been so sheltered w a safe congressional district that he doesn’t know how different a statewide race is — and the larger national picture at stake.
I am serious: if he can’t extracate himself from this, he needs to be told to stand down. We MUST have this Senate seat.

I actually think this is the part of Aiken's statement that is idiotic. Or can you enlighten me on the ways women have of spontaneously shutting down their ovum during the course of a "legitimate rape?" Pity it was not available to the thousands of German women who bore babies that were the product of rape by Russian soldiers after the fall of Berlin.
