Obviously in this case... YES!!!
That's a rather stipulated response.

Either way, thanks for sharing your opinion.

Even fans of Sarah Palin, who was successfully demonized by the Left, have this Pavlovian response to attack any conservative the Left tell them to.

My Pavlovian response has always been to defend whoever the left is attacking.

I’m saying that the candidate was probably trying to differentiate forcible stranger rape from a “date rape” that takes place in questionable circumstances. Are you saying that no woman has ever, ever falsely accused a man to exempt herself from moral criticism?

Perhaps others won't be as disinclined as you. You never know.

Well people who make stupid comments about rape generally don't do well in elections, so we'll see. Really wonder if the guy was drinking, because that sounds like something somebody with a little too much to say.

Being a professional politician for over 20 years, you'd think he'd be able to know when to shut up. Most people prone to make stupid comments, tend not to last too long, unless their last name is Biden.

Akin released a statement and said he misspoke.

Biggest shock is watching how quickly GOP establishment will throw Akin under.
McCaskill is Obama’s favorite Senator.....Does getting back the GOP majority and removing McCaskill no longer a big deal to these fools?

A conservative literally cannot make a human error in speech without the selective outrage crowd pouncing. I’ve never seen anything like it

I’ll say this: If a girl goes on a date with a guy, invites him into her apartment, is surrounded by other people who never hear any protest and there is no physical evidence of force, and it takes her several days to decide it was rape, then it doesn’t meet the definition of rape, IMHO.

I’m all in favor of executing rapists. But I’m not in favor of blindly taking a woman’s word that a sexual act was rape...

Then he must not be prone to making stupid comments.

Too funny, especially when you read 'em in the order in which you wrote 'em.

When women who can become pregnant are forcibly raped very few do become pregnant compared to women who engage in consensual sex. Now I could sit here and cite numbers and stats til I go blue in the face and you will disparage me the entire time so go do your own research.

I actually saw Akin speak at the end of the day at a defense industry conference a couple years ago - even though I largely agreed with his content, for some reason he struck me as a rambling idiot and I left early.

This one is just the same as an unrecoverable stall in an airplane - you either bail out or hit the ground.

GOP is extremely fortunate that this happened before any possibility of campaign appearances where Romney or Ryan appeared with Akin.

I agree that he made a dumb comment, but the conventional wisdom is that abortion is a losing issue for us. It’s not!

Missouri is one of the more pro-life states in America. Almost decisively so. He’s obviously not the best speaker out there ,and I’m sure his people will tell him to be more careful

Not only is this guy going to blow his lead with this statement but this may reverberate among the national press and other Dem candidates for days painting all Republican candidates with the statement. You know the press is going to ask Romney if he agrees with the candidate’s “legitimate rape” comment to try to tether him to it. We do not need Republican candidates supplying the DNC with fodder for their war on women narrative grist mill.

I know Todd Akin personally. He is not stupid and he is not an idiot. He is not a typical politician. He has humility, courage, honor and integrity. He not just espouses, but lives the same conservative principles espoused by this website. I have personally witnessed these character traits manifest in him for over 24 years.

One of the senses of the word "legitimate" is "established (vs. unestablished), constituted".

Perhaps you didn't know that. I think that logic and common sense would dictate that the word ought to be understood in that sense, in light of the context in which it was used, but Charles Jaco style red-shirts, et al are not interested in logic and common sense. They have an agenda, which is the antithesis of what Todd Akin embodies.

What I would like to know from those here calling Todd Akin an idiot and stupid is, just how do logic and common sense dictate the exclusion of an accepted meaning or sense of a word?

Cordially,

I’m saying that the candidate was probably trying to differentiate forcible stranger rape from a “date rape” that takes place in questionable circumstances.

Thanks. I assumed he meant assault rape vs. someone claiming they were raped as the reason for an abortion. Neither explanation makes much sense, frankly, when you look at statistics. After reading various links to the statistics asscociated with rapes resulting in pregnancy, the number is very small...whether it's "legitimate", illegitimate, or whatever somone might call it.

The numbers were about 2 to 400 out of a couple hundred thousand rapes. That is a very small number. I would tend to believe all those claims were "legitimate".

Are you saying that no woman has ever, ever falsely accused a man to exempt herself from moral criticism?

No. I was wondering what you were saying when you brought up how a woman dressed in a "date repe" scenario.

By all accounts, Akin is NOT a RINO. In fact, he’s been so sheltered w a safe congressional district that he doesn’t know how different a statewide race is — and the larger national picture at stake.

I am serious: if he can’t extracate himself from this, he needs to be told to stand down. We MUST have this Senate seat.

And let this be a lesson to other GOP senate candidiates. Shut your damned mouth when you are beyond your depth. The MSM is lying in wait. If you are too stupid to understand this, then you don’t deserve to be elected, so get the Hell out of the way.

......"the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down."

I actually think this is the part of Aiken's statement that is idiotic. Or can you enlighten me on the ways women have of spontaneously shutting down their ovum during the course of a "legitimate rape?" Pity it was not available to the thousands of German women who bore babies that were the product of rape by Russian soldiers after the fall of Berlin.

That’s not going to fly.

If we can’t let the left with Obama and Biden’s moronic gaffes get away with it we shouldn’t either.

AT BEST, this shows that the guy’s public speaking chops and judgement are badly lacking and he likely will say more moronic things in the future.

This goof’s candidacy should be terminated and terminated with extreme prejudice by no later than tomorrow morning.

Sarah Palin was astute in endorsing Steelman.

Statistical subtrefuge ~ you can also conclude from that analysis that rape ~ legitimate rape, or illegitimate rape (and isn't the point of the word 'rape' that it's an illegitimate process) ~ is no more likely to cause pregnancy than ordinary hum drum consensual sexual intercourse.

I do believe it misses the point here.

He gave, two parts to his answer, the first part was enough - doctors say that rapes don’t usually result in pregnancy. He could have, should have left it there; it was enough; it was specific enough.

He tried to add to the answer and meant to do so by referring to the incidence of a “legitimate charge of rape”, as opposed to what is left to the listener to interpret, but which he likely meant those incidence where “the charge” of rape was “not legitimate” - it was a false charge. He meant be right, but the distinction is unnecessary, and in trying to say what he meant, he used the term “legitimate rape” - not “a legitimate charge of rape”. Which begged the question, are some rapes “legitimate”? He didn’t need the second part of his answer and when he attempted it he fumbled it and that fumble looked stupid. He didn’t know when to stop talking.

Good point...I think Akin really ought to get some pro-life women out defending him on this point....it’d be good strategery. :)

But I believe all the screaming that he is an idiot is overdone. We (and by we I mean others in the conservative movement) are so damn eager to throw over a guy who says something that seems to be a bit controversial. He was speaking off the cuff.

Damn, if only the liberals were so quick to fire Obamugabe every time he had a faux pas. He’d have been fired as soon as he said “The Cambridge Police acted stupidly.” And he MEANT THAT...it wasn’t merely a quick slip, like this was in a tv interview....and he had a long time to “fix it”, as he was in control of the press conference.

I’m sick and tired of us assuming the worst of our nominees. No wonder the effing communists are so united and we’re so divided.
