Statement on Rape and Pregnancy

August 20, 2012

Washington, DC -- Recent remarks by a member of the US House of Representatives suggesting that “women who are victims of ‘legitimate rape’ rarely get pregnant” are medically inaccurate, offensive, and dangerous.

Each year in the US, 10,000–15,000 abortions occur among women whose pregnancies are a result of reported rape or incest. An unknown number of pregnancies resulting from rape are carried to term. There is absolutely no veracity to the claim that “If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to shut that whole thing down.” A woman who is raped has no control over ovulation, fertilization, or implantation of a fertilized egg (ie, pregnancy). To suggest otherwise contradicts basic biological truths.

Any person forced to submit to sexual intercourse against his or her will is the victim of rape, a heinous crime. There are no varying degrees of rape. To suggest otherwise is inaccurate and insulting and minimizes the serious physical and psychological repercussions for all victims of rape.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (The College), a 501(c)(3) organization, is the nation’s leading group of physicians providing health care for women. As a private, voluntary, nonprofit membership organization of approximately 56,000 members, The College strongly advocates for quality health care for women, maintains the highest standards of clinical practice and continuing education of its members, promotes patient education, and increases awareness among its members and the public of the changing issues facing women’s health care. The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), a 501(c)(6) organization, is its companion organization. www.acog.org

Are you a pro-abort troll or what??
I've asked others as well.. Only a few would answer straight up. Those wanting Akin out seem to be either pro-abortion or won't admit they aren't (same thing). That's a bad stain on "conservatism."

The words “magic uterus” were never uttered. And, yes, there are many lifers that are educated. I resent you referring to us as knuckle-draggers.

Agreed.

And what’s characteristic of them all is an unparalleled level of smugness and arrogance.

Besides he set back the Pro-life movement big time by exposing a little know secret of the magic uterus , held by hopefully a tiny fringe element.,
I don't like that reference. It's offensive, and I hope the moderator agrees with me and dumps your commentary.

The redherrings in their statement is obvious and intensional (I hope, or we have illiterate MD's running loose. True or not, what he said has backing and is at least as valid as the claims that rape ncrease fertility rate. I'm a bit botherd by the numer of conservatives that can't seem to fathom "legitimate"=Actual forced rape, or that "try" does not mean prevent.

http://www.inplainsite.org/html/abortion_and_rape.html

1. Pregnancy due to rape is extremely rare, and with proper treatment can be prevented. Studies conducted by Planned Parenthood's Guttmacher Institute indicate that two consenting and fertile adults have only a 3 percent chance of pregnancy from an act of intercourse. They also indicate there are factors involved in a rape which further reduce these chances for rape victims [1]. The Guttmacher Institute says 14,000 [2] abortions per year are due to rape or incest, which amounts to just over 1 percent of all abortions [3]. Other studies show that pregnancies due to rape are much rarer than is generally thought, perhaps as few as one in a thousand cases [4]. Furthermore, since conception doesn't occur immediately after intercourse, pregnancy can be prevented in the great majority of rape cases by medical treatment that removes the semen before an ovum can be fertilized [5].

So where does the misconception come from that many pregnancies are due to rape? Fearful young women will sometimes attribute their pregnancies to rape, since doing so gains sympathy and avoids condemnation. The young woman called "Roe" in the famous Roe v. Wade case-who elicited sympathy in the court and media because she claimed to be a rape victim-years later admitted she had lied and had not been raped at all [6].

Oh, yes, you're right! The same type people that have bumper stickers that say, "Don't Like Abortion? Don't Have One." Grrrr.

Yes and that is why there is a functioning alternative to the abortion loving college of Gyno’s.

Here is a link to AAPLOG:THE AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF PROLIFE OBSTETRICIANS AND GYNECOLOGISTS Read up on the facts Buttercup.

http://www.aaplog.org/american-issues-2/bioethics/the-presidents-council-on-bioethics/ The ACOG: the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Even requires PRO_LIFE Gynecologists to refer patients for abortion services. That is why the AAPLOG is considering leaving the ACOG ALL TOGETHER.

Yes, FACTS ARE A BITCH!

“The women that are offended are those that have had abortions and CAN’T STAND the thought of someone TALKING, TALKING, TALKING, about it, as their shame (and pain) is DA*N NEAR cutting off their air supply, it is so deep.”

This is so delusional it doesn’t even deserve a response. Clearly someone speaking without thinking rationally.

It's actually pretty close to the truth, but these women can find help and healing, if only they seek it out.
