Not the Behavior of a Winning Campaign
RedState ^ | August 24 2012 | Erick Erickson

The media keeps showing its rear end. Let me just make that clear. If you are a competent reporter, I’m not sure how you cannot be embarrassed by the majority of those in your profession right now covering politics.

From Mark Halperin, to Jake Tapper, to Chuck Todd, more journalists are actually now admitting just how pliable the media is when it comes to Barack Obama’s spin. All week long, as the economy deteriorates, most every anchor at most every news outlet, most every editorialist in most every paper, and most every “centrist” and liberal pundit has been pointing out the GOP’s extremist abortion position.

Few, if any, have pointed out that Barack Obama’s abortion on demand position is extreme. Few, if any, have pointed out how most Americans favor restrictions on abortion. Few, if any, have pointed out that Mitt Romney’s position is actually more mainstream than Barack Obama’s. Few, if any, have wanted to go beyond Politifact’s ham-handed cover for Obama on infanticide and get into what Barack Obama actually said in 2002. Hear him come out for infanticide yourself right here. Remember, the media is hiding behind the left-leaning Politifact (and yes, it does lean left) to avoid having to deal with this.

They cannot help themselves. But why are they doing it?

They are doing it for the exact same reason Joe Biden is claiming the GOP will put black people back in chains and why Barack Obama would rather talk about uteri than jobs — they all know Barack Obama is losing this thing.

Hysteria creeps into campaigns when the campaigns know they are losing. When George H. W. Bush saw the election slipping away in 1992, he took to referring to Bill Clinton and Al Gore as Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum. The invective went up as his poll numbers went down.

Barack Obama and the Democrats are going to throw in the towel on the tradition of sitting on the sidelines during their opponent’s political convention. In the past, the parties did this with each other. Not now. The Obama campaign cannot afford to. It is too close and polling is about to shift from registered voters to likely voters, which will generate negative numbers for him. He must surrender another tradition to engage in more hyper partisan mudslinging because he is losing.

More and more polls are showing Mitt Romney trending upwards in swing states. More and more polls are showing Americans growing more pessimistic about the economy. More and more economists are starting to worry about the economy. Gas prices and milk prices are going up while take home pay is going down.

The hysterics we are seeing from the Democrats come as reality hits everyone. Even I have been convinced that Romney was going to blow this thing. The stupid statement about the Soptics not having the fate they had if they were in Massachusetts could have been game over.

But then Paul Ryan became the veep pick. He has now given Romney purpose. He has defined the campaign. He has put Barack Obama on defense. Consider this — the sage voices of the GOP were convinced the GOP could not win the fight on budgetary and entitlement reform. They were convinced Paul Ryan would sink the ticket.

Then the Democrats tried to define Paul Ryan and failed. They have been failing ever since. Their attempts to define Mitt Romney didn’t do enough and they have yet to settle on a narrative to define Paul Ryan. They are grasping at straws. Now they’d even fight the Associated Press style book to try to go after Paul Ryan.

And that gets us back to the media. At what point will they finally start asking if Barack Obama needs a campaign shake up? Because if it was Mitt Romney in the same boat, they sure as hell would. In fact, there have already been two different media cycles about Romney needing a campaign shake up and not one about Barack Obama.

Why? The simple truth remains the vast majority of the media is more sympathetic to and friendly with Team Obama and would hate to ruffle the feathers of friends. It’s one of the greatest thing Mitt Romney has going for him right now.

Nope. I think they do know it. Like Obama, they try and hide their true leanings.

Spin? Nothing quite so clever.

Spin is the act of taking an event or a speech and attempting to force your interpretation on the media and the public.

The Obama campaign - and Axelrod in particular - can’t even achieve that lowly standard. They have, er, progressed to outright lies completely untethered to anything that can be checked, verified or examined in its raw state.

‘We’ve created jobs’
‘Our plan is working’
‘Without X, Y would have failed’

etc.

Media fact-checking seems courageous and principled but it’s usually an exercise in statistical minutiae.

Obama’s lies are so over-the-top that no rational person could or would believe them. But reinforcement is still the most powerful shaper of human behavior and since the media have yet to challenge the president directly on his outrageous claims of success what incentive does he have to change or at least to think twice before uttering such nonsense?

No, the reason the media is beginning to turn on Obama is that they realize that their beloved Democratic Party could go down with him.

I think you are on to something.

The same thing is happening in Virginia. This is entirely different from 4 years ago.

Why would you be booed for volunteering and personally expending effort to help the Romney campaign?

Regardless of our nominee, many believe that principle and a desire to see Obama take one square on the jaw (metaphorically speaking) at last are enough to sway the election but if the Democrats have one advantage it is their robotic focus on bodies and numbers. They are happy to have a red-herring debate on Voter ID safe in the knowledge that they can and will do whatever it takes to circumvent such laws, especially absentee ballot fraud.

I’m always amazed that the 2000 election doesn’t receive more scrutiny beyond ‘it was close,’ ‘I’m glad Bush prevailed’ and jokes about hanging chad. But it was close only because of Dem vote fraud and the fact that they finally got caught with their pants down.

Multiple reports say that Axelrod and Cutter are bitter enemies - long may it continue.

One clear sign of Obama’s lack of any managerial skill is his infantile reliance on his handlers. But this is not a Bush/Rove or Clinton/Carville/Morris scenario - these political hacks are Obama’s surrogate family (oh boy does he have some serious daddy issues). Can you imagine voluntarily spending leisure time with Axelrod or Jarrett? What a load of vinegar drinkers.

Arrogance has always been the watchword but Obama’s treatment of those $35,000/plate contributors is starting to circulate widely. Apparently he spends a grand total of 7 minutes meeting and greeting, then takes a private meal with Jarrett (her again) and not-quite-out-of-the-White-House-yet Reggie Love.

Halperin is still busy carrying water for The First Dictator every morning on MSNBC. He will happily vote for Obama in November.

Did you hear anything about having the military votes counted this time around? If the GOP can’t get serious about that egregious theft of voting rights from our military personnel, it deserves to lose. Eric Holder is concerned that every illegal alien has the right to vote without an ID in TX, but he’s not at all interested in insuring that our military men and women have the same right.

While the Dems and the media constantly attempt to create a schism between conservatives and moderates (whoever they are), it seems inevitable that the Dem party is destined for a split between 1) the hard-core statists in coastal and urban areas who are now unafraid to openly espouse European - no, make that Greek - style socialism and 2) any poor buggers with a ‘D’ after their names who hail from red states. They and their constituents STILL believe that ‘Dems are for the werkin’ man’ and that it’s the party of Truman when in reality it is the party of Stalin.

It’s one thing to debate marginal tax rates or claim you will protect Social Security, quite another to explain why you are a member of a party that thinks gay marriage will somehow result in a stronger, more cohesive society.

Completely agree. I think many people overlook the incalculable damage the corrupt MSM and Hollywood has done. Together I think they are more responsible for our precipitous decline than almost any other single factor.

Their lies. Their ommission of facts. Their deceit. Their ongoing propaganda. It is all now coming to the inevitable destructive conclusion. And, as the alternative media rises, the corrupt MSM becomes ever more openly partisan and shrill as they seek to blunt the impact of the alternative media.

We’re with you! Wife and I will be manning a phone bank in Niceville tomorrow, along w/about 30 others via bus from Central Alabama. And I’ll wear the same yellow shirt that I wore when “a few thousand” of us bitter clingers marched on WashDC in September 2009...

Absolutely spot-on, marygam

We all like to get on here, post our profoundest thoughts, and think that we’re moving the needle.

Well, this is one guy you’ve convinced. First thing Monday morning, I’m getting off my ass and reporting for duty at local Republican headquarters.

My forefathers left their farms and families, musket in hand, and put their very lives on the line to throw off the chains of oppressive government. The least I can do is give up a few hours of my time to do battle against the forces which are destroying our country.

Communist Goals (1963) http://www.uhuh.com/nwo/communism/comgoals.htm

15. Capture one or both of the political parties in the United States.
17. Get control of the schools. Use them as transmission belts for socialism and current Communist propaganda. Soften the curriculum. Get control of teachers’ associations. Put the party line in textbooks.
18. Gain control of all student newspapers.
20. Infiltrate the press. Get control of book-review assignments, editorial writing, policymaking positions.
21. Gain control of key positions in radio, TV, and motion pictures.

The media know Obama’s in danger of losing.

Their side, especially, won’t show up at the polls if it looks like a done deal before the election. They can’t get them to the polls as it is unless they hand out smokes and cash.

Their only hope is to continue to pretend it’s going to be close and try to manufacture a few scandals to get their drones to the polls to supplement the dead.

If they tell the truth about Obama’s numbers, he’ll not only lose, but lose in a landslide and, if that happens, they won’t have the votes to keep the Senate.
