Embattled Senate candidate Todd Akin just told reporters in Chesterfield that he is staying in the Senate race against Democratic incumbent Claire McCaskill.
Akin repeated the kinds of statements he'd made previously to national media, asserting that he's never had the support of the Republican party establishment anyway. [...]

“Akin repeated the kinds of statements he’d made previously to national media, asserting that he’s never had the support of the Republican party establishment anyway.”
This guy wasn’t my personal favorite in the primary, and he seems to have a real problem with foot in mouth disease.
And I’m really beginning to LIKE him! You GO Todd! I guess the gop can’t even competently throw someone under the bus.
Then he better change his tone quick and go on the offense. It was a major foul up statement but it is the past. I am still pissed at him simply because it played right into the left’s hands and gave them the Macacca moment of the campaign.
As I predicted, here’s what Akin said ... translated:
Its all about my own career and screw what anyone else in the party thinks. Id rather lose this seat to a proabort liberal then step aside and let a better conservative candidate have a shot at it. Im a stubborn old coot.
comments at St Louis newsite are telling:
“Who would have thought Todd Akin would become a hero of the Democrats! Thank you, Mr. Akin! OBAMA 2012!”
“We have supported Akin. He has done a good job for our district in Congress. We voted for him in the primary. We have accepted his apology, but we are extremely disappointed that he seems to be putting his personal ego before the needs of the party, the state and the country. By staying in the race he is assuring that McCaskill will retain her Senate seat. That is a travesty in itself, but he may also be assuring that Obama will get Missouri’s electoral votes. This is not only a travesty but a major disaster in our opinion. We have urged him to reconsider and to do the right thing for the party, Missouri and the Country.”
“I agree 100%. I hope his aids and any others he trusts will try to persuade him to do the right thing and resign.”
“I suggest conservatives of all stripes start calling “Obamacare” Akincare instead. Every stubborn action Mr. Akin takes at this point increases the chances that Akincare won’t be overturned. He needs to be made a pariah, he needs a legacy to remind him and his family just how much damage he’s done. I thought Christians were supposed to be humble and put others before self interest. Todd Akin is seemingly no Christian.”
I’ve done all the blustering I can do over this... I refrain from any further comment on Akin the fool of Missouri; but for this last time... Akin, you ain’t no hero, you a donkey’s ass...
UGH.
While odds are Romney will take MO (even though he’s behind today), Akin will lose that Senate seat BIG time. The GOP just lost the Senate. Further, he has nationalized an abortion debate that can not be won with his “legitimate rape” idiocy. While America is about split on abortion, they are NOT split on rape, incest and life of the mother. They HEAVILY favor that.
Unreal. What a maroon.
Gee, and I thought Noot Gingrich had a big ego. Sheesh!
I’m getting the sinking notion that several years from now, when the history of the 2012 campaign season is looked back upon, the media wags will have it defined as the “GOP: Party of Rape” election.
Read the whole thing:

VERY VERY VERY well said.
If/When Akin wins, Rush will have to adjust his “99.7% of the time right” meter. Can’t wait to witness that!
Ouch!
McCaskill does not want her prize toy withdrawing before Sept 25. So she will spent part of her 12 million dollar war chest
with positive ads about herself before that date without attacking him. She would not want to get too far ahead of him before that date for fear he will withdraw.Come September 25 she will unload on him with every one of her ads ending in 2 words “legitimate rape”.
He is doing it for spite now.
I think he is too vain to quit.
He had a few opportunities on national radio and subsequently, such as today, to clarify his statement. Yet he did not do it.
He should have said that what he meant with the word “legitimate” is a legitimate “claim” of rape. A rape that actually happened and was not contrived by the woman. Sometimes men are falsely accused. He was not astute enough to do that.
What a selfish moron. The GOP should have nothing to do with the idiot and run a write in candidate.
Oh my Akin head ...
I smell a landslide victory for Romney and that always allows state nominees to win on the Presidential coat tails. Missouri is a red state and my prediction is that Akin will beat McCakel when Romney wins big here because of his coat tails. I, for one, have and still will vote straight Republican ticket. I expect from the anti-Obama swell here as well as general distrust of all dems, there will be a lot of others doing the same thing.
Why the hell even have a press con... I can’t say what I hope happens to that fool Akin... may he rot in political hell...
When monkeys fly out of my a##.....
Go Akin! I’m donating tonight!
Tell me more about how a guy from Cape Girardeau, who still has family in the state, whose family has been involved in Missouri politics for decades, knows nothing about Missouri politics.
Go Akin! I’m donating tonight!
Were on a roll with Romney/Ryan ...about to take the presidency, the senate, the house and the supremes. These stakes don’t get higher and we got a good shot at running the table.
We can win the senate without Akin but the repubs cannot allow another like him.
Make a friggin example out of him so any repub who even THINKS of breaking goofy and fng this up knows whats in store. Cut every dime and delete him from everyones phones. He’s out like Fredo. If he does happen to win no office, no chairmanships. He can sit in a bathroom stall all day.
Virgil Goode supporters: Do you see what’s happening? You are being played by the DNC! Just as the Democrats spent $2 million to support Aiken, they’re spending money to bolster Goode.
Can’t you see this is playing out in battleground states in MO and VA to divide and conqure?
Are you too stupid to see this? We have now lost MO. Are you content to play the DNC’s stooge?
Nope. Romneycare already owns that.
Speaking of which, ABO's should be ABMs in this case. Anyone but McCaskill. After all, the blemishes (gay boy scouts, gun control, etc.) don't matter with Romney, then a verbal gaffe should be far easier to overcome with Akin.
Romney is the ABO.
Akin is the ABM.
(Aiken = Akin)
Akin make Newt look like St. Francis of Assisi.
Spite, selfishness, ego, legitimate rape...
Amazing the number mind-readers we have in the Rightwing. I thought that was the province of the Left.
The guy is a self-centered moron.
GO SEE 2016. LEARN what Obama has planned for America.
NO ONE person and NO ONE career should be allowed to stand in the way of defeating him.
This jerk’s ABSOLUTELY idiotic comments can not be apologized away or condoned - EVER.
I just lost what little respect I had for that OTHER idiot, Huckabee when he came out in defense of this total jerk.
This is NOT a Missouri issue anymore. Akin’s stupid comments made it a NATIONAL issue.
I am leaving in 10 minutes to go see 2016 :-)
The GOP didn't throw anyone under the bus. The fool jumped in front of a train and expects everyone else to follow his lead.
If Akin were to drop out, the GOP will lose that race anyway. No way they can get a candidate in there that can clean up the mess and win in two months.
Akin has to fight. He made a stupid statement, clearified his remarks and apologized. Nothing more to do other than go on the attack of McCaskill’s voting record, tax cheat issues and her airplane. You know, the things that really matter to people?
We are losing the battle to liberals and have been for a very long time. If Akin drops out, we lose this one by concession. If Akin in stays in and loses, then we go down fighting. If Akin win, we get a victory.
Also I am officially done with weak kneed RINO’s, cry babies and drama queens on talk radio (Rush, Levin, Hannity, Beck, Ingrahm, etc.). These a-holes have done the work against Akin for the DNC. They are traitors as far as I am concerned.
Mr. niteowl77
No, I think the seething hatred for Akin has become the real issue.
Quite honestly, the intemperate response to this man is extremely embarrassing, and one of the many reasons I will remain a Conservative Libertarian.
You don’t get it. It’s not about MO anymore. Akin is proving to be a drag on the NATIONAL ticket. If you can’t see this, you’re part of the problem.
Great.
Six more years of that arrogant, condescending McCaskill.
Yep, this is terrible PR. Another one who invested so much so he gives himself the right to stay on, even though he screwed up. They just do not want to own to their mistakes. It’s not about what he said, really, it is about HOW he said it, and it came out as hijacking the issue of abortion for political points instead of presenting the whole issue with the consideration it deserved on its own merits.

.
They had their instructions from above and followed them to the letter.
The GOPe, and the DNCe are all a part of the same club, with the same ultimate goals.
That is a great idea: I couldn’t agree more.
I’m a virgil goode supporter, and I am because Romney is a radical liberal whom I never could support.
Akin is a solid, pro-life conservative as evidenced by his track record as a legislator.
He’s the primary winner. He has my support.
Absolutely!
If you add the 9% who want a last minute change, he is one point away from tying. The GOP can not agree on a replacement and it would be a disaster. The GOP needs to shut up and let this guy win. Instead they want to tar and feather him for one comment. The pc crowd is alive and well.
However, if Akin is the only alternative to McCaskill on November 6, I will still vote for him. And, after September 25, I may even get a yard sign and a bumper sticker. Here's how I may have to persuade people to vote for Akin: "Look, he may be a doofus, but at least he's better than McCaskill, and he may give us a Senate majority, and he will push the button the right way on votes--repealing Obamacare, for instance."
I’m actually okay with this although I agree that he’s an idiot but he’s our idiot and we can survive this. It brings the discussion and we need to have the discussion.
