Freddie Mercury was a long-time fan of opera, especially favouring Montserrat Caballé. In 1987, Mercury and Caballé met in Barcelona. When the city was chosen for the 1992 Summer Olympics, Caballé, a native of the city, was asked to assist with producing a song for the games. She summoned Mercury for the task. The song was co-written by Mercury with Mike Moran and submitted as a candidate for the 1992 Olympic theme (the selection was scheduled for 1988, 4 years before the Games). Following Mercury's death in 1991, the recording was played over a travelogue of the city at the start of the international broadcast of the 1992 Olympics opening ceremony.
