Michigan State Jewish student attacked at party, knocked unconscious; ADL "horrified by violent assault."
A Jewish student at Michigan State University said he was attacked at an off-campus party in what he is calling a hate crime.
Just before the assault, which broke his jaw, Zach Tennen said his attackers asked him if he was Jewish, according to reports.
Tennen, 19, a resident of suburban Detroit, said he answered in the affirmative. He told WDIV-TV in Detroit that his attackers also "were making Nazi and Hitler symbols and they said they were part of the KKK."
Tennen was knocked unconscious during the attack, which took place early Sunday morning near MSU's East Lansing campus. The assailants stapled his mouth shut through his gums.
Others at the party watched as Tennen called a taxi to take him to the hospital. His mouth was surgically wired shut.
His family has called the Anti-Defamation League regarding the assault.
ADL responded to the parents of the victim and were in contact with local law enforcement and university officials.
“We are horrified by this violent assault and allegations that the student may have been viciously attacked because he was Jewish,” said Betsy Kellman, ADL Detroit Regional Director.
“We are confident that the East Lansing Police will thoroughly investigate this deeply troubling case and, given the allegations, treat it as a possible hate crime. We hope the perpetrators will be swiftly brought to justice.”
The university in an email statement referred all questions about the police investigation to the East Lansing Police Department, as the incident occurred off campus.
"Michigan State University's Student Affairs and Services office has reached out to the family of the student who said he was assaulted in East Lansing to provide the academic and other support the student needs," the statement also said.

Zachary Tennen, a sophomore at Michigan State University, was approached by two men at a party early on Sunday and asked if he was Jewish, according to Tennen’s mother. The men proceeded to raise their right arms in a Nazi salute and said “Heil Hitler”, before beating Tennen unconscious. According to Tennen’s mother, 20 people watched while her son had his mouth stapled by the two suspects.
The ADL “has spoken to the parents of the victim, Zachary Tennen, a sophomore, and has been in contact with local law enforcement and university officials since first learning of the assault, which took place in the early morning hours of August 26 and reportedly was witnessed by other students,” according to a statement released by the group on Tuesday.
Michigan State has approximately 3,000 Jewish undergraduate students on campus, according to Hillel’s website.

I never did see two guys just start beating on someone.
The story has been posted earlier where the cops say they don’t believe it was a hate crime after interviewing people at the party. Admittedly, these are the local cops and not the university police. But it’s a liberal, college town that lives off the student body. And how did the punks know he was Jewish? It just doesn’t smell right.

Zach Tennen says he was at a party when two men asked if he was Jewish, and when he responded “yes,” punched him in the face. Tennen says his attackers also stapled his mouth.
The 19-year-old sophomore from the Detroit suburb of Franklin was recovering Tuesday from jaw surgery. He says the assault took place early Sunday at an off-campus party.
East Lansing police said in a statement Tuesday that the assault was “not likely a hate crime.”
The statement also says police have identified a potential suspect.
Police did not return calls Tuesday from The Associated Press asking for more details on the attack.
Yes, the facts need to be sorted out, but a rather serious assault. As a bouncer I wouldn't necessarily expect you to intervene, but wouldn't you call 911? What was wrong with the bystanders? I admit to being a bit surprised at the number of people, not you, who seem to imply this is the victims fault.

Whether this incident is a hate crime or not is purely a semantic dispute. Regardless, the perpetrators deserve no mercy. I hope these pieces of shit spend many years in prison contemplating just how evil they are.
IMHO, the death penalty is entirely appropriate for such sadistic animals...
I don’t know, in my younger days on the infamous Rush street, every now and then, there was a drunken jerk who, for whatever reason ( didn’t like my looks, was pissed I was with a girl and he wasn’t) would do something to start a confrontation). I was always out there for one reason- to meet women so I ignored it. Luckily, I always managed to avoid a fight. But I know for a fact there were some real losers out there who just started a fight no matter what.

The are NO hate crimes agains whites or Jews, no matter the evidence.
Excuse me, no one here likes attacks against Jews, or is slow to condemn such things.
This story contains contradictions and some implausible elements. No one is being antisemitic because this particular story might be exaggerated.
The story was his mouth was “stapled shut”. Apparently he found a staple between his teeth. He said no one would help him, police said that’s not true. He said he was thrown out of the party house he was at after being beat up, which was just weird.
The story happens to sound fishy, that’s all. No need to get all angry at people for it.

I read it in a(nother) forum discussion concerning this incident & verified it through other sources. Another valid argument (imho) was the unlikelihood of 20 people watching someone being tortured like that & saying/ doing nothing.
I’ll reserve judgment. There are so many of these self-inflicted “hate crimes”, but once in a while, there are real scuz buckets out there.
