In defense of Clint Eastwood: He was weird, but fantastic
Yahoo ^

Posted on 08/31/2012 3:26:48 AM PDT by nuconvert

Go ahead. Vet my day. A fistful of incoherence. High slurs rambler. Every which way and loose.

Clint Eastwood, the 82-year-old movie star and director, inspired what seemed like enthusiasm inside the Republican National Convention's Tampa Bay Times Forum—and disbelief outside it and on Twitter.

If the Lord allows me to make it to in my eighties, I’ll be thankful just to be able to get showered, into my clothes, walk out on a stage (never mind set up a teleprompter or write a speech), ramble on from my heart, tell the truth, and then have sense enough to quit when I’m supposed to, and ambulate off the stage on my own steam. - Oh, and the “Outlaw Josie Wales” doesn’t give a rip what we think like it or not . . . (good on him that he’s not straining getting plastic surgery and hair transplants trying to look 21) . . . .

Good line, I think best line was: "When someone can't do the job in this country, we let him go."

I think there's alot of people in this country (especially the 23,000,000 unemployed) who that line resonated with, and I'm guessing a whole bunch of them are itching to "let Obama go." I personally know quite a few who are.

I never was much of a fan of Eastwood’s, maybe because i don,t think i would like to call myself a fan, a fan is only good for one thing and not very good at that.

But one thing you can not call him is a white washed sepulchre, it is really amazing how simple the truth is when ever it is spoken with out any hidden intent and a bunch of mealy mouthed words that are intended to cushion the blow.

From a delivery persepective, it was definitely awkward and off-color. But, as you say, it was also genuine and heart-felt. I have a feeling the the Convention organizers were probably expecting something much different and didn’t preview the speech because it was Clint. Anyway, plenty of fodder either way for those who say they loved or hated it.

Clint added a buzz to help continue public conversation beyond the RNC convention...time to let Obama go.

Liked how he touched on Obama flying around in Air Force One to...talk about student loans

Through use of humor... highlights Obama's backward priorities, ineffectively ignoring big issues, hypocrisy preaching green energy, fuel efficiency and his childlike behavior

...basically time to take the keys away and put an adult in charge.

How the hell any media commentator gets the right to knock someone like Clint, I'll never know.

Only goes to show that the media is so damn loyal to the Dems, politics aside, can't even recognize someone like Clint as just plain "good" people.

Eastwood has been an actor for around sixty years. He was talking to an empty chair and obviously using humor to ridicule Obama. I expect he did exactly what he intended to do exactly as he intended to do it.

Exactly...

Clint hammered obama & biden. He thinks they're incompetents. I loved every minute of it. obama is in shock right now that Clint said those things about him.

Hes 82 people! he spoke like an 82 year old. it was somewhat hard to follow but then i’m used to speaking to the elderly so its pretty normal. the fact that he was there, stood up and spoke at all was really sweet.

I was there and can report that Clint's impromptu appearance was nor only spot on, it was hysterica! We were laughing ourselves silly - and we Kansas Delegates were on a far corner, almost under the stairs (only worse seat in the house were the Vermont Delegation, they were right behind us against the wall!

When ole flinty-eyed, soft spoken Clont began speaking to "O's" empty seat, telling him to "shut up" then continuing with the dialogue to the imaginary Obama, was classic comedic "shtick.".

Audience was unprepared for this, I can tell you but as he continued with the banter, it was classic tough-gut, Clint.

Reminiscent of the spaghetti westerns, ie, "Hang 'Em High.". I half way expected Clint to spit at Obama's chair!

Of course, Hollywierd was incensed, how dare one of "them" appear on public to 'dis "the one!"

Another writer inferred here that Clint appeared not to have a grasp on reality. I can tell you all that some in the hall didn't grasp what technique Clint was using but that was only because we weren't able to see him except on a very large monitor.

My only complaint was that the RNC planners hadn't miked him up enough, as his raspy quiet voice needed it considering the loud background.

Barack Obama would be telling Eastwood to "take the pill" and end it.

Someone commented on that yahoo thread that the bit had a lot of Bob Newhart styling to it. I think that person was on to something.

I've been thinking of Eastwood's performance all evening and what he said has really stuck with me.

Perhaps we've become "ageist" -- hostile to old people -- and need to have a little talking to.

I agree. It was a masterpiece of brilliance and daring. And I hope everyone on FR knows that the enemy is devastated by being reminded that Clint is on our side. See, they spend all day and night on Facebook bloviating about how the Right are knuckle-dragging, illiterate, stupid, bible-thumping, racist haters - so it really, really upsets their applecart when someone they take seriously as an actor, auteur and ...gasp...major jazz fan is even at our convention, let alone that he got up to mock and deride their fake messiah. Clint made my day. He made our country’s day.

Clints talk was in sync with Romneys speech,

Both addressed jobs, voters getting wooed in 2008 election energy of Obama

Clint: (2008 election) ..they were talking about hope and change and they were talking about, yes we can,...Oprah cried,

,... we do not have to be metal (ph) masochists and vote for somebody that we don’t really even want in office just because they seem to be nice guys

Both were addressing past Obama voters, basic message ...time to let Obama go you (we) deserve better

This was a very effective presentation. It came across as someone fair minded, and skeptical, who simply disagrees with obama and is not going to be intimidated.

This is what happened on Chick Fila day.

Americans showed up in droves. Normally quiet, and always fair. But they’ve had enough.

Same thing will happen in November, hopefully.

They can’t give him the Charlton Heston treatment. Heston was just an actor. Eastwood is a giant of c i n e m a, a revered and serious d i r e c t o r. He did something invaluable - he turned over to us his trademark slogan to support our side. Priceless.

I thought it was amusing. It wasn't the scripted, pre-packaged sound-byte laden palaver one usually gets at a political convention, so it was a very nice lite-comic interlude.

The reason the left hated it so much is because it ridiculed their god-king and ridicule is *their* weapon. We're not allowed to use it.

“I think best line was: ‘When someone can’t do the job in this country, we let him go.’”

That’s the line I like best, too. Sadly, for the last 20 or so years during the Age Of Diversity and Affirmative Action, that hasn’t been true. Having been in H.R. for a long time, it’s more common to promote someone when he can’t do the job.

Hussein needs to go away.

I think what was sorely lacking was a good director.
The intro music came right on top of the previous piece of music played. There needed to be a longer pause between them and the intro music needed to pay a bit longer to build anticipation.
The chair needed to be of more substance - made out of wood so it could be seen better on tv. A sign with Obama’s name pinned to it so the audience could read it would have helped too.
It needed Clint to direct it. lol.

People say it was weird, he was rambling. That may be true, but I actually liked it.I think people in the media and the Obama campaign that are going after an 82 year old guy for rambling might want to think twice. There are a lot of elderly voters out there who themselves might ramble a bit.The man got up there because he obviously wants to help change the direction this country is heading. If he rambled so be it. I understood the message through it all. Just my opinion.

" . . . speaking to "O's" empty seat, telling him to "shut up" "

The only thing missing here was the spitoon placed next to the chair Clint might have availed himself of from time to time. Lawdy, what a gag sight that would have been if he missed the mark, splattering cheroot juice all ove the chair.

Some find it “painful” to watch because unless you die, you will get old. Your abilities will diminish. It is natural.

However, when an 82 yr. old can make an audience of millions laugh and enjoy the moment, he is to be admired and celebrated. In spite of all the wear and tear, you aren’t seeing an old car, but a classic.

I just commented on another Eastwood thread - -

I experienced outburst after outburst.
Couldn’t wait for the re-run - laughed again.

He said, “In Hollywood, Conservatives don’t go around ‘Hot Doggin’ it.’

‘Biden is the intellect of the Democrat Party!

He was hysterical!

And elderly - so what?
Let the pundits have their day - - hmmm - sounds similar to - - -

Recently saw on TV a shot of Obama from the back, seated in a chair, his head barely showing above a nice chair, (yes, his head looked like an urn . .) with a sign that says “Taken.”
Really don’t know if it’s real or not.

Thanks for the on site view. I heard him over the ABC radio feed on WMAL. Didn’t know about the teleprompter problem but Clint spoke loud and clear with a steady voice when speaking of our country. The scathing comedic piece was clearly done as a character. I heard it as harking back to Jimmy Stewart talking to the imaginary six foot rabbit Harvey in the movie by the same name, but that’s me. Overall the radio broadcast conveyed it well. Could have done without the real geezer, Sam Donaldson talking over Clint so much. I look forward to catching the youtube version w/o the commentary.

Clinton out Alinskied the Alinsky-ites, fixing the empty chair as obama and then ridiculing him. Effective? Judging from the WH tweet response of the chair photo and comment, yeah it stung Barry. And of course, baby cakes Barry had nothing to do with finding the photo file and responding on twitter.

Each to his own, I guess. I thought it was great. Spontaneous, witty, genuine, funny, entertaining, with some very profound statements thrown in for good measure.

But then I didn’t particularly care for Ryan’s speech. I thought it sounded pretty well like every other political speech I’ve heard, so maybe it’s just me.
