Noonan: Romney not helping himself
politico ^ | 9/12/12 11:31 AM EDT | MACKENZIE WEINGER and DYLAN BYERS

Posted on 09/12/2012 4:00:50 PM PDT by Red Steel

The Wall Street Journal’s Peggy Noonan is criticizing Mitt Romney’s response to the death of a U.S. diplomat in Libya, telling Fox News today she doesn’t feel that the Republican presidential nominee “has been doing himself any favors” in the past few hours.

“I was thinking as he spoke, I think I belong to the old school of thinking that in times of great drama and heightened crisis, and in times when something violent has happened to your people, I always think discretion is the better way to go,” Noonan said. “When you step forward in the midst of a political environment and start giving statements on something dramatic and violent that has happened, you're always leaving yourself open to accusations that you are trying to exploit things politically.”

In a statement last night, Romney slammed the Obama administration for sympathizing "with those who waged the attacks" rather than condemning the attacks outright. Romney doubled-down on that attack today during a press conference, telling reporters the statement was “akin to apology" and that it was “disgraceful to apologize for American values.”

But Romney's effort to politicize the violence in Libya was met with blowback not just from the Obama administration but from the media. "[Romney's] doubling down on criticism... is likely to be seen as one of the most craven and ill-advised tactical moves in this entire campaign," Time magazine's Mark Halperin wrote on his blog.

Noonan's criticism delivers a harder blow, however, coming as it does from high within the ranks of the conservative establishment. Indeed, it is just the latest in a string of criticisms Romney has faced from the right's most influential media outlets in recent days, including The Wall Street Journal editorial page and the Weekly Standard.

“I don't feel that Mr. Romney has been doing himself any favors, say in the past few hours, perhaps since last night,” Noonan told Fox News. “Sometimes when really bad things happen, when hot things happen, cool words or no words is the way to go.”

Peggy Noonan: 'Romney Looked Weak Today'

"Published on Sep 12, 2012 by WSJDigitalNetwork

WSJ 'Declarations' Columnist Peggy Noonan says Mitt Romney "didn't do himself any favors" with his response to the U.S. Embassy attacks in Libya, and describes why she believes the Republican presidential candidate is ceding foreign policy to the Democrats in this election season."

No Noonan, you're a dunce. It's Obama who is weak.

It's Obama who is weak.

What will be interesting to watch will be how Obama handles the sequestration report now.

His plan of how to apply the $600 B in defense cuts was due last week. Then said they would publish it this week.

Bambi's now trying to appear strong. How are those cuts going to look in the wake of this disaster?

What happened to you, Peggy? Romney was Presidential today. It was nice to hear an ADULT speak out on the horrible “carefully planned” attack. Mitt, you have my support...keep it up, ignore the Obama Media, and as Reagan use to say, “don’t be afraid to know what you know”.......

I thought Romney’s handled himself well in front of the rabid press. His 3 point approach to foreign policy was an excellent answer. Peggy Noonan should STFU.

Noonan wants another “John McCain” “stand back, be silent, never be bold or take the lead” Republican. Also, he should cheer for Obama whenever possible- letting us know that “Obama is really very competent and will make a good President” Yea, Peg, that has worked so well for us in the past. She has become irrelevant.

Wow, both the WH and the media think this was bad?? Score one for Romney!

Let the WH and media get their panties in a bunch..they are a waste of time, and it's showing more and more every day.

Wow, the media is going into high gear to finish Romney off. Even coordinating the narrative before Mitt’s press conference (though I’ve no doubt that is par for the course). I guess they aren’t satisfied with the Obama convention bump and wanted to make sure R/R are buried for good.

I watched Noonan deliver this drivel in her oh-so-breathy and world-weary voice this morning. I didn't think she could sink any lower than she did in 2008. Watching her this morning, I knew I was wrong. What a self-serving disgrace she is.

I think the upcoming election is so critical that these commentators like Noonan have a choice to make.

Keep your mouth shut and support our candidate because moving out Obama is critical. Or they can continue to ingratiate themselves to the mainstream media by offering pithy commentary against our candidate, which by definition ends up being pro-obama.

David Brooks, David Gergen, Mary Matalin, Noonan and perhaps (shudder) Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts. All of them seem to value their cocktail party standing in DC than saving the country.

I think I belong to the old school of thinking...

That's the truth.

I used to read a lot of Noonan in the 1990s and 2000s. But she changed after the Bush 2004 campaign turned down her offer to work for the team.

Noonan is a throw-back to the old days of non-confrontational Republicans. Did I just say "old days?" That sounds just like today's Republicans, too.

I cannot believe this was her impression. I just saw a clip, and he looked presidential in addition to sounding it.

Maybe most other Americans feel the same way I do, but the media’s knee-jerk response, to make this tragedy an opportunity to dissect Romney, really concerns me.

“Right! I propose a resolution to consider future action.”

I think that an edict came down from the White House to condemn Romney for speaking out against the Obama foreign policy. I think that Obama told the press that it was imperative that the country speak with one voice and that one voice did not belong to Romney.

Noonan is oh so compliant.

The fact is that Obama slept through the events last night. The Three AM call came and Obama slept through it. …or maybe no one bothered to call him at all. In any case, he was MIA. People on the West coast were following the events very closely, waiting for some word from the President that he was on top of things and that the Marines were on their way. … but nothing came.

We finally went to bed and didn’t even know that Romney had finally spoken out. Romney must have been waiting for the President, too, because we didn’t hear about the Romney statement until this morning.
