As the summer driving season comes to an end, motorists who were hoping gas prices would fall are instead getting hit with a big jump, especially in the Northeast.
The average price of a gallon of regular gas increased 1.5 cents nationally for the second straight day, taking it to $3.86 in AAA's latest reading Wednesday. The back-to-back price moves follow what had been a lull in gas price activity after an August run-up in prices caused by Gulf Coast refinery disruptions as Hurricane Isaac approached.
Prices had been expected to retreat quickly once the Gulf region's facilities came back online. But Tom Kloza, chief analyst at the Oil Price Information Service, said the retreat in prices following the storm is being delayed because Isaac hit so close to Sept. 15.

Well, Chicago is one up on Seattle. Regular 89 octane gas is $4.22. It cost me over $85.00 to fill the tank of my Dodge Caravan and it wasn’t completely empty. It so expensive I can’t afford to go anyplace after I got it filled.

We were out your way over Labor Day. Stayed at Stablewood Springs in Hunt. Beautiful place and looked at some property but just a little pricey for us. River was way down and limited to one man kayaks but everything else looked a lot greener than last summer.

What gets me is how fast and large the moves have become. It went from 3.77 to 3.99 in a matter of hours.

It’s interesting how the frog in the water thing has been so successful. I can remember when gas was $.25 a gallon but we would wait a day or two because Hudson Oil would always start a gas war and it would go down to $.19. Not too long ago I was real excited when it dropped to $3.22 for a day or so and made sure I topped my tank off while it was “only....”
Grams, you might be my age. I, too, remember the gas wars of the 1950s and 19c/gallon. I used to buy retread tires for $6 or $7 that fit my 1941 Olds. That was the time that McDonalds had 15-cent hamburgers, soon to inflate to 18 cents. I cut lawns for $1.00/hour.

Wow, you made the big bucks. I had my first job in 1955 or 1956, $.76 an hour typing collection letters on a manual typewriter. I could type 80 wpm so my boss was impressed and increased my pay to $.80 an hour after I was there a month. Wasn’t quite old enough to work but my mom lied about my age because everybody in the family needed to work. The $7.60 might not seem like a lot but it really helped out in those days.
We never went out to eat so I don’t know if there was a McDonalds or not.
After reading the article, the prices become doubly infuriating: The Gov’t can’t even design a regulation to switch from the more expensive summer gas blend to the cheaper winter gas blend without causing a spike in prices as the change occurs. Idiots!
