Hard to believe you'd have Romney wandering about peddling Hannity's half baked theory about vast hordes of people escaping payment of any taxes at all

47% of Americans pay no Federal Taxes. Do you dispute this? I'd call that a vast horde. Most of the same people do not likely pay state and local taxes either. So the only actual, real taxes almost half the public pay are sales taxes and the like. Hannity is correct, and Romney's statements here are correct as well.

I see that truth telling comment as a positive to a fence sitting Conservatives like this family. Were still not pleased with being shoehorned into accepting the media chosen Romney ticket.

Sure on a sunny day we’d hold our nose and vote for him...but more comments like that will make us definite foul weather voters.

The election is over. Romney lost and lost big.

Are you kidding? This is the first thing I've seen Romney say I am actually excited about. Yes, the media will try to use it against him. Let them run it 100 times every day, it will force a discussion about the fact that so many Americans are dependent on government. I think Americans need to hear this, and I think a bare majority will understand it.

I know those of us here, think it is great for Mitt;s campaign. Get his base fired up and such. We all thought his ME comments last week were great, and he lost that debate in the media.

Afraid this isn’t going away, and will hurt him with the average voter. I have been so sure Obama was going down in November. Now, I am pretty depressed.

The media will not let this die. They will paint him as an uncaring evil capitalist.

Now if the LA time would just run their Obama video.... oh wait, they told us in 2008, they’d never release it.

I think its going to be Romney/Ryan by a landslide

I hope so, but Romney is pretty much predicting the opposite in this video. The point Mitt is making is that 47-48% of Americans are going to vote for Obama no matter what. I think a landslide is really unlikely.

53% of the country that works and PAYS TAXES is mad as hell that they are supporting all the freeloaders. This revs them up to vote!

I have been so sure Obama was going down in November. Now, I am pretty depressed.

Not I. I've always felt a majority of Americans still WANT to like Obama, and that he would probably win because of it. I've given Mitt around a 30-40% chance to win. These statements force a conversation about how dependent Americans have become. I think it helps him if he doesn't waste too much time backtracking.

We all thought his ME comments last week were great, and he lost that debate in the media.

I was indifferent. Romney made a statement and then mostly shut up about it. I would have thought his comments were great if he had relentlessly followed up on them and pounded Obama for a completely failed foreign policy - but that didn't happen. By not hammering on it, I felt he effectively conceded that he spoke out of turn.

Afraid this isn’t going away, and will hurt him with the average voter.

Yes, the MSM will pound him for this. I think we want the argument. Romney needs something to shake up this race. A discussion of government dependency could be just the thing.

I supported Romney when I realized no other explanation for his Paul Ryan pick and timing made sense other than he wanted to make this a referendum on fiscal conservatism.

It wouldn’t surprise me if Romney leaked this video to get the focus back on fiscal conservatism.

Did you ever take a look at how many different federal taxes there really are? You and I and everybody else in America get stuck with paying them all the time ~ directly and indirectly.

Most folks have never bothered looking into that ~ they just focus on one tax called the Federal Personal Income Tax and imagine that's the only thing that affects them ~ totally ignoring the Federal Corporate Income Tax, the Federal Capital Gains Tax, an army of excise taxes including a tax on medical equipment ~ including the little tabs diabetics use to see if they need insulin, or exercise, or emergency attention.

Ronald Reagan himself came up with the idea of removing low income people from the penalty imposed by having to pay the federal personal income tax ~ he was right. Hannity is an idiot, and if Romney really believes him, he's a fool.

This is the tax we need to eliminate entirely.

So, what was it Romney was saying ... in reality .... not as intepreted by Mother Jones or ABC(a bunch'of commies).

Let me get rough on this one ~ your ignorance is boundless ~ there's an election going on and you want to talk about why the poor should pay more taxes.

That is so totally mind numbingly ridiculous I can't believe you are on FR.

NOBODY makes that claim ~ that there are people who totally evade all taxes!

The issue arose when someone figured out that there are a lot of people who do not pay a single tax called Federal Personal Income Tax ~ but otherwise they pay an awful lot of taxes ~ directly or indirectly ~ of all kinds.

The federal personal income tax is the one we should abolish anyway. Ronaldus Magnus taught that low wage earners should not be punished with this tax and he removed it from millions of people.

Mitt’s right, but this is going to sting him big time. The media will spend all week on this, covering up anything else. And this will play into the elitist persona they and Obama are trying to pin on him.

Yes, we conservatives like it. The statement is true. But we also see that Mitt lost the media war last week on the mid-east situation.

Obama’s bitter guns statement is worse, but you won’t hear the media hyping that non stop.

Tonite, is the first time I have been really down this election cycle. Hope I am wrong, but this may do Mitt in.

Ugh......

The entire media mafia is out with guns and knives tonight and the internet is on absolute fire about this. This video is so on point for Conservatives but is being literally trashed from coast to coast by Average Joe Public.

Romney needs to start getting specific on eliminating loopholes for upper income taxpayers and corporations who also do everything in their power to get out of paying an effective rate or it will look for good reason like he is always happy to focus on the lower rungs of society.

Everyone pays some taxes, but a LOT get back more than they pay.

That means those people didn't pay any tax.

Of all the stupidity! He got into trouble for saying something like this in the GOP Primary. Did he learn nothing about the press then?

Oh Wise One! Please pardon Your Humble Servant!

It is perfectly reasonable to talk about the entitlement mentality in an election. Many of those on the government teat WILL vote democrat, and NOTHING we will do or say will stop them. They are voting themselves money from other people, and they will not stop.

The idea that people are entitled to government goodies in ever increasing amounts is the root of our social disorder. If we cannot defeat that idea, we cannot win ANYTHING. And yes, there are still producers out there who are tired of being leached off of. But we are either at the tipping point, or past it. In any case, we need to fight entitlements - and the Chicago teachers have provided ammo. Wisconsin is an example of folks saying we’ve gone too far. If we can make progress in a liberal stronghold like Wisconsin, we still have a chance - IF we fight.

Sorry to hear you want to concede. But we cannot win by giving more entitlements than the democrats.

"There are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent on government, who believe that, that they are victims, who believe that government has the responsibility to care for them. Who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing."

Find an error in that statement. He didn't say that 47% "are dependent on government" period. What he said is that when you add up those dependent, those who think they are victims, who think they are entitled to pay outs from the state for food and housing etc., that totals 47%.

This may not be an exact figure, but it's pretty damn close when the dependents, victims, and super-special entitleds are all added up.
