Obama: Romney 'sure can afford' to pay more
By Kevin Bogardus and Amie Parnes - 09/22/12 07:40 PM ET
President Obama made a campaign stop on Saturday in Wisconsin, saying Mitt Romney "sure can afford" to pay more as part of his argument on tax policy.
At a Milwaukee rally, the president took several shots at the Republican presidential nominee and sought to energize his partys supporters to help get out the vote in the crucial swing state.
We have always said in this campaign that change takes more than one term, Obama said, asking for more time to finish the job he started as president.
The president also sought to highlight the contrasts between Romney and himself on several issues, including energy, Medicare and taxes. Obama has said he would raise taxes on those making $250,000 or more annually and at the rally he argued against more tax cuts for the wealthy.
I can afford to pay a little more and Mitt Romney sure can afford to pay a little more, Obama said. We dont build the economy from the top down. We build it from the bottom up.
The comments come one day after the release of Romney's 2011 tax return.
The rallys crowd was estimated to be 18,000 and remained upbeat through the rain that started to come down during the event. Supporters would often boo at the mention of Romney, but Obama would cut them off.
Dont boo. Vote, Obama said.
Earlier in the day, Obama attended two fundraisers in Milwaukee. At one of those events, the president hit Romney on the 47 percent remarks he made at a private fundraiser earlier this year.
We can't move forward if we've got leaders who write off half the nation, calling them a bunch of victims who will never take responsibility for their lives, Obama said.
In response to the rally, the Romney campaign said Obamas policies are not working for the country.
After an absence of 220 days, President Obama has finally returned to Wisconsin a state he won by over 14 points four years ago. In Wisconsin, and all over America, people are tired of the presidents false attacks and broken promises. Incomes are falling, costs are rising, and jobs are scarce, said Amanda Henneberg, a Romney campaign spokeswoman.
Mitt Romney has a plan for a stronger middle class that will result in more jobs, higher take-home pay, and a real recovery for our economy, Henneberg added.
Republicans are optimistic about winning the state in the presidential race this November. Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) was able to fend off a recall challenge earlier this year a huge defeat for Democrats and their allies in labor after he forced through legislation in 2011 that banned collective bargaining rights for some public workers. Parts of that law were overturned last week in a court ruling.
Recent polls, however, show Obama leads Romney in the Badger State. A Quinnipiac University/New York Times/CBS News poll this week indicated that Obama led Romney 51 percent to 45 percent in the state.
Asked why Obama was campaigning in the state, Jen Psaki, the traveling campaign secretary for the Obama campaign, said Obama refused to cede the state to Romney despite the fact that he was up in the polls.
Were going to run here, like in any battleground state, like were five points behind until Election Day, she said. And today is about energizing our supporters, reminding them of what's at stake in the election, making sure they're getting out registering their friends, getting to the polls.
At the same time, she added, "We've always thought Wisconsin would be harder for us this year than it was four years ago."
When Obama landed in the state on Saturday afternoon, he was not greeted by Walker. But Psaki told reporters that baseball hall of famer Hank Aaron would be attending Obama's fundraiser in the state.
Well take Hank Aaron over Governor Walker any day of the week on our trip to Wisconsin, she said.
Yet Hussein doesn't. I wonder why.
sounds like the words of a mugger.
obama, you’re a ghetto shakedown artist. Get the hell out of America.
Do you notice how they never say how much is enough?
What is the perfect tax rate, Mr President? If you believe it, why didn’t you push for legislation to set the rate at that level?
This nebulous talk of “they can pay more” is nonsense and class warfare without taking a stand.
MAKE HIM TAKE A STAND!
18,000 people showed up to see and hear this clown?
0bama’s tax return indicates he receives $72,000 per month from somewhere. Where is that?
Both his grandparents and his mother died. His grandfather was involved in (I am not sure here, but I read that it was oil). His grandmother was a bank VP. His mother had worked for the Ford Foundation, meaning that her overseas salary would have had tax relief and a living allowance. What did these people leave him in the way of inheritances? Did he have a trust?
How much of the tax money has Obama wasted? How much has he used to buy votes? Now he wants people who earned more to pay for his own mistakes? He can go golf and send his wife on vacation.
Lots of people have great resentment for Obama and his attitudes.
Romney did not accept a salary as MA Governor or his work for the Olympics.
I doubt he will take a salary as President.
George Washington never took a dime as CIC of the Revolutionary Army nor his two terms as President either.
He is defiling the Office of the presidency. He is not an American by upbringing, so he thinks that the ghetto style of Chicago politics is somehow clever. There are many, many more voters who do not live by the ghetto code of ‘dissing” those who don’t agree with you. They do not find anything to admire in his slovenly campaign tactics.
Enough is a rate sufficient to assure that a voting majority is permanently dependent on government and will vote Rat forever.
We have always said in this campaign that change takes more than one term, Obama said, asking for more time to finish the job he started as president.”
Au Contraire, my FRiend. They have the new "1040 SCRUYOU" all ready to go:
,,,,,, 0bama buys 35 million dollar home on ocean fromt beach in Hawaii and attacks Romney’s wealth . Nice ,,,,,,
Exactly - Romney can demonstrate paying more than he is legally bound to pay - Zero hasn’t shown us anything except his a$$ (of course the unfortunate position of it upon his shoulders ensures it is always in view).
I receive lots of financial emails and delete them but some are focused on just this....
So, Obama is attacking Romney for being a successful business man. Obama is always attacking success.
[ 18,000 people showed up to see and hear this clown. ]
No, the media is LYING like usual!
More like less than 5,000.
He's black, what did you expect?
Obama has spoken of the Bush tax cuts as "giving" money to the wealthy. The Romney campaign ought to be pouncing on that--it reveals a mindset where all of our money belongs in the first place to the government...and the rest of Obama's policies show that he really does think like that. It should be easy enough to make a campaign ad that hammers home that point.
