We're hungry! Students revolt over Michelle Obama's 850-calorie school meals with online video

New rules on school meals inspired by Michelle Obama were intended to wipe out hunger and malnutrition among American students - but some are complaining they have had the opposite effect.

High schools are now forbidden from giving pupils more than 850 calories for their lunch - even if they are fast-growing teenagers or even student athletes.

One enterprising group of adolescents channelled their anger at the policy into a parody YouTube video promoting their cause entitled 'We Are Hungry'.

The new restrictions were mandated by the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010, signed into law during the lame-duck period of the last Congress in December 2010.

Now that the rules have come into effect for the new school year, many are concerned that some adolescents are being denied the quantities of food they need.

Student athletes can burn through as many as 5,000 calories a day - but they are still entitled to no more than 850 calories for their lunch.

Even though recommended calorie intake is different for males and females, the restrictions are the same for both boys and girls.

One of many “head scratching” moments while teaching at an inner city school.

Typical.....However, this does not surprise me...you realize I was being very sarcastic etc....

Your school is ‘lucky’ the people that made that decision just didn’t decide to let the derelicts into the school to eat..guess they just haven’t thought of it yet....

What a sick toilet this nation has become. I spent many years packing three big, healthy lunches each night for my kids to take to school. How did things get to the point where a scumbag like Michelle Ubama matters at all when it comes to kids’ lunches?

then I have to have a burger or a hot dog!

I am talking about situations where I have kale or some boiled once leafy green now over cooked slimy wad of vegetable matter on my plate. I am "required" to eat it; the dog is too smart to take (or I will get caught giving it to the dog!) and throwing it out isn't an option either.

Mustard lots of it, the spicier the better is the best solution when forced to eat this “vegetable”.

Hmmmm.....well mustard does sound like the remedy. Another thing is just plain vinegar. It works well with spinach. If you have Balsamic vinegar, that makes anything taste excellent.

If you have a salad dressing cruet, put some olive oil, balsamic vinegar and maybe a little sugar in, and swish it around.

Try it on some nice sweet garden tomatoes (sliced).

I used to eat mayonnaise right out of the jar at home. The kind in the packets at school was gross.
