Mars Was Once Covered In Hip-Deep Flowing Water

The Curiosity rover's science team has come to a consensus: There was once a large amount of flowing water in Gale Crater. They can't say when, or for how long, but based on the types, shapes and sizes of rocks they've been seeing, they can say, finally, there was flowing water on Mars.
We aren't talking about a small amount of water either: The stream running from a canyon in Mount Sharpe called Peace Vallis could have been up to hip deep. The water eroded jagged rocks into smooth stones and deposited them in a fan shape across the floor of Gale Crater, Curiosity's landing site.
The team has examined rock outcroppings from three areas along the rover's path, all of which indicate that water had eroded rocks into gravel, then deposited them in layers. These layers cemented together forming what's called a conglomerate rock, similar to a rough cement.

Curiosity first spotted these conglomerate rocks at her landing site, Bradbury Landing, where her thrusters blew away a top layer of dust from the surface of the Red Planet. This image has been white balanced to look more like it would on Earth.

So, either Mars had a lot of water and some planetary change evaporated it off, or Mars was like it is today, and a one time event flooded the planet, until Mars eventually returned to it’s barren self.
A one time planetary flood? Sounds mythical, no?

Great port Mr. Blam. I’d sure like to know what that greenish rock is and could it be polished. It’s a very pretty color, sort of turquoise. It would be way cool to have a piece of jewelry made of it.
It's a sedimentary rock type called a conglomerate. They're very common on Earth.

The asteroid Ceres, between Mars and Jupiter, may have more fresh water than Earth.

I am not an expert, but what I have read is that due to Mar’s weaker gravitational force and limited atmosphere, any surface water escaped into space.

It would sure be interesting to get a big drill up there and see if there are any subsurface aquifers.
Stories like this aren’t as fun to read without an artist’s conception of what the planet looked like with water, complete with drawings of the creatures that they speculate inhabited the water . . . . . .
Yep, the water was hip-deep on Mars. I had to put on my chest waders to go fishing there. Caught a nice five pound Rainbow. Oh.....wait a minute.....that was Idaho. I always get them mixed up.
Let me fix your statement:

Either that is some soft rock (the pebbles) or they have been washed around for a while before being deposited. They’re pretty well rounded. While exfoliation might account for some of that, simple wear is likely.

Based on the satellite images, that is why we landed there, to find evidence of water. Not so much a lucky breccia, but a conglomeration of smart folks, gneisses even, working together!
