Romney's Missed Debate Opportunities [vanity] (Fellow FReepers, please share what you saw...)
Last night's debate transcript - Politico.com ^ | 04 OCTOBER 2012 | TXnMA / Debaters

Posted on 10/04/2012 2:44:06 PM PDT by TXnMA

In his wrap-up, Øbama said,

"But I also promised that I'd fight every single day on behalf of the American people, the middle class, and all those who were striving to get into the middle class. I've kept that promise and if you'll vote for me, then I promise I'll fight just as hard in a second term."

At that point, Romney should have silently stepped out from behind his podium and -- executed a clumsy golf swing...

I was aware of several more opportunities Romney missed to "hit a homer". What other missed opportunities did the rest of you, my fellow FReepers, see?

The RNC ad should be...

Obama’s close as the audio... over pictures of him playing golf and on screen captioning explaining that he has played over 100 rounds of golf in four years and hasn’t met his jobs council in 6 months.

I thought I heard Obama say something to the effect of “That’s why you have a budget.” Thought Romney should jump on the fact that Obama’s proposed budgets didn’t get a single vote in the Senate, and that Congress has not passed a budget in 3 years under Obama’s leadership.

Romney needs to list the litany of Obama’s 2008 promises that he has yet to fulfill.

GITMO closing [just to inflame Obama’s liberals]

Cutting the deficit in half, but increasing it by $trillions, instead

etc.

Also hadn't, until Libya exploded, sat in most security briefings.

That could be another list -- BHO, AWOL.

Right. That was another item Romney did not point out -- Obama's budgets getting ZERO votes, and the Dems failing to pass their own budgets.

Education.

Repubs fall for it every time. It's locally funded and controlled. Taking state tax money, sending it to D.C. only to return less of it to local districts, but with the added bonus of bureaucratic genius programs, is never really a winning issue.

It should be philosophically rejected.

Mitt's argument was more..."I can do it better".

When they were going back and forth, debating “revenues,” Romney should have corrected Obama and that senile guy and said, “Bureacrats call them “revenues,” as if it’s something they earned. The American people call them taxes and they’ve had enough of them.” Or something to that effect.

That’s the affirmative action modus operandi. It doesn’t matter if you actually accomplish anything, as long as you can get people to believe that you tried real real hard. Or at least keep them from saying you didn’t by throwing the race card. “I ain’t no ways tired”

Would have been great, since he brought it up, to explain that the Constitution gives NO authority in 99% of the cases and he’d push it all back to the States, where it should be.

Worst I heard out of his mouth were
1) No reduction in taxes
2) Shore up SS/MediC.
3) Pursuit of Happiness = brothers keeper/social net (WTF?)

So yeah, he had the facts, but he could have really gotten everyone behind him for once.

Even a mom and pop candy store needs a budget to function
properly. But you have tried to run the largest financial

a total disaster."

1) He’s the first person I’ve heard/seen in a public forum unabashedly expound the concept of federalism and pushing anything back down to the states where it belongs to this lunatic marxist yet.

Newt and McPain and Palin and all the others made noise about it outside the ring, but Romney is the point guy who landed the first punch.

2) “c”onservatism according to Kirk/Burke is the veneration of preceding generations. So anyone who comes in and tries to turn the Titanic around on a dime is just going to break the ship or get thrown overboard by the geezers. We’re going to have to honor the amoral commitments that our parents and grandparents committed us to, the same way our kids have to honor the horrific debt we’ve already piled on them. If we default up or down then we become the radical progressives.

One of Obama's answers grated on me - the question was on the size and purpose of government.

Obama's answer (I'm paraphrasing) was that the first duty of gov't was to "keep people safe".

Now where in the Constitution does it say that? Is it something to do with "pursuit of happiness"? Maybe "providing for the common defense" or establishing our right to "feel secure in our homes"? None of these duties of gov't seems to fit exactly with Obama's belief in "keeping people safe".

It dawned on me that maybe Obama really doesn't even know what the Constitution says (he grew up in Indonesia, I doubt they teach it in school).

Obama's vision of the role of gov't will always clash with mine (to provide maximum liberty). How can you "keep people safe" without strictly controlling their actions? So we get to the heart of the matter - Obama's idea of the role of gov't is the Nanny State, where he controls everyone's lives (for their own good, of course).

Well, the only relevant missed opportunity would have seemed really out of place if Romney had mentioned it:

The opportunity to point out how “conservative” talk radio hosts and posters on conservative websites are so easily fooled by shallow minded talking points tossed into the ring by the left.

Talking points meant to discourage conservatives.

Deficit reduction: In 1 response, Obama said that he was going to use the savings from ending the wars to cut deficit, a few answers later, he blamed the deficit on GWB and cited having 2 wars that were unpaid for. If we are borrowing to pay for war, how are we using money for reduction and other programs without just borrowing it for something else?

Uh...I don't think anyone believes you're "the bad guy." It's simply a fact that Romney was excellent last night; he wiped the floor with Obama. Most folks are happy with that. Speaking for myself, I tend to agree with Mark Levin that it's not realistic to think Romney's debate team is going to be scouring the internet looking for anonymous suggestions. They seem to have matters well in hand. Besides, there are two more debates left, with plenty of material to cover.

As for this being "what's left of FR", I guess that must include you, as well.

Okay, try this one:

Obama's bound to reuse his criticism of Romney's lack of details in his economic plan ("he said he was going to do such-and-such, but he never says how").

Someone suqqested Romney's reply should be "You have to pass it to find out what's in it". Catchy sound bite, but a more direct attack might be that Obama has no ideas of his own, which is why he criticizes everyone else's...

I can't agree. These "missed" opportunities are the kind of sophomoric snark that has passed for political commentary for far too long. It's beneath the office Romney is seeking a month from now.

I was thinking that while Obama kept talking about hiring more teachers, Romney could have chimed in “you mean like the ones in Chicago that were on strike Obama”? The ones that want tons more money while turning out illiterate kids with no future?” You mean the union teachers that want no accountability for doing a lousy job?”

Hmmn, must be why Odumbo stayed out of that. LOL

I didn’t hear Romney get to the root of the financial crisis of 2008 and correctly put the blame on the housing bubble and the cause going back to the Clinton admin. He sort of let Obama get away with blaming bankers and lending institutions for the whole disaster. We know the fed gov. was responsible for about 90% of it.

There was one who did this time and time again, but was/is called a kook...Ron Paul. But, based on his own record, I accord these words to Mitt as no more than banter. IF he does win the election, I’ll gladly eat crow when actions take place.

Making economic slaves of proceeding generations, just because they bought into the ‘you can have it for free’/Ponzi scheme, is both immoral and unethical.
A) They are not Constitutional (see ‘C’)
b) The programs are bust already (I’ve read to the tune of 100+TRILLION)
C) They were always TAXES 1st and ‘promises’ 2nd
D) There is/was never any guarantee
Cut the losses and free the younger generations; they may actually forgive the old-timers enough to take care of ‘em (as they should)

Making economic slaves of proceeding generations, just because they bought into the ‘you can have it for free’/Ponzi scheme, is both immoral and unethical.

So then what do you propose?

The kids are economic slaves for the $16T outstanding debt as it is, without even discussing SS (Socialponzi Scheme).

What to do about that? Is it a legitimate debt, or not? Pay it all off? Or renege on the immoral and unethical commitment?

Same with SS? Pay out those who've paid in, and cut off everyone born today? 20 years ago? 55 years ago?

Conservatism suggests that you introduce change gradually, but that you respect past debts, gambling or otherwise.

That’s easy; cut it all off; I’d rather the ability to pay a bill off than know me and my children+ will be slaves if it continues.

And, no, I don’t believe it’s an outstanding debt, left pocket owing the right. Everyone was swindled, you get nothing.

But, you want to pay it off, give the States back their land, sell off the Fed property still outstanding (won’t need much when those alphabet agencies are gone) and allow the free market pay off the rest (taxes in that boom would surely take a few years to pay off the debt).

Conservatism cedes to Constitutionalism. You don’t wind down what never should have begun, you chop the bastard’s head off instead. How many more generations of ‘the poor’ should we ween off the gov’t teat? None, you stop throwing good $ after bad ASAP.
