WASHINGTON (AP) -- The U.S. unemployment rate fell to 7.8 percent last month, dropping below 8 percent for the first time in nearly four years and giving President Barack Obama a potential boost with the election a month away.
The rate declined from 8.1 percent because the number of people who said they were employed soared by 873,000 — an encouraging sign for an economy that's been struggling to create enough jobs.
The number of unemployed Americans is now 12.1 million, the fewest since January 2009.

Wonderful these “magical” good numbers.
In my area, the only new business I have seen to open is the Halloween costume/supplies store. It rented the same empty, closed former carpet(?) store that it has rented the last few years. The Halloween supplies store rents it a couple months prior and then departs right after Halloween.
Of course the old carpet store is empty the rest of the year, though the owners would love to find a full time tenant.
But the new jobs just aren’t here that I can see.
Oh, wait..a couple years ago, a new GoodWill store (thrift store—used clothing, etc) opened after the former auto accessories store left.
Even if (playing devil’s advocate here) the numbers are not totally cooked, they’re not jobs that will improve the public’s mood. They’re mostly temp jobs, part-time jobs, low-wage service sector jobs. They’re not the “I can buy a house, a new car send my kids to college” kind of jobs that people really want and need. Retailers are piling on temps for the “holidays” (and this even includes Halloween). That’s all.
I forgot to add that they’re mostly jobs with few or no beneifts.

The same Bureau of Labor Statistics will issue the last Consumer Price Index Report prior to the election on October 16. The September report indicated the inflation rate on all items (including food and energy) was running at an annualized 1.7% rate. Excluding food and energy it is running +1.9%. Food price inflation annualized was reported at +2.0% and energy price inflation reported at minus 0.6%.
Gasoline prices are climbing and I’d be happy if food prices in my grocery store were only increasing at a 2% annual rate. No doubt the books are being cooked here as well.
