The leg is doing okay, thanks. On our new project they're not letting us on the net from our desks - grrr! They have a few computers we can use on premises in an "Internet Cafe" - otherwise have to use the phone. Such is life. :)

In 1902, the 29 year old Sergei Rachmaninov married his first cousin, Natalia. The Russian Orthodox Church had a problem with this, and Sergei’s grandfather, a military man, had to intervene with the priests in the Russian Army to get a dispensation. Luckily, none of the children had genetic abnormalities, and Sergei lived long enough to spoil his granddaughters mercilessly.

In that year, Sergei published 12 songs which he had been working on for the past two years. Finding videos with English text wasn’t easy, but I found a few.

The first song is about fate, and not surprisingly, the piano accompaniment echoes Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony. This is a window into the Russian soul.

Rachmaninov: “Fate”, Op. 21/1

Gorgeous tune!

”They Replied”, Op. 21/4

Very dreamy.

”Lilacs”, Op. 21/5

Religious and contemplative.

”Before the Icon”, Op. 21/10

Hmmm . . . First cousin. That's dangerous! Of course, I had a crush on my first cousin once removed when I was in high school - at age 66, she's still a knockout. My Great-Aunt and Uncle didn't do ugly!

Yet it was a successful, happy marriage. Sergei and Natalia managed to avoid the odds.

In 1903, the 30 year old Sergei Rachmaninov wrote a set of variations on Chopin’s Prelude in C minor from the Opus 28 collection. This is the same very short tune that Barry Manilow turned into an eight minute monstrosity. Sergei takes Chopin’s little theme and does something amazing with it in 30 minutes. Remember our rule for writing variations from our weekends with Brahms: “The harmonies supporting the melody must remain constant, but everything else can vary.”

Rachmaninov: Variations on a Theme by Chopin, Op. 22

Hello Dear Kathy, thanks for the thread and for all you do. I’m still dehydrating the odd tomato here and there, pulling the occasional bean pod as well as canning and drying peppers (for chilli powder). I’ve canned lots of pears and made several batches of pear butter (both sugar free and high octane) but there’s manny gallons in the fridge to go, about a dozen bussells in my kitchen and I haven’t finished harvesting my neighbor’s pear tree yet. There will be lots of canned pears, pear butter and pear chips this year for sure, but they are in demand and don’t gather dust! If I could figure a way to mass produce and market this stuff I’d have a new career. I have a for special sampler box already packed for you which will ship as soon as I make a fresh batch of Chilli powder.
