Mitt's New Momentum
The American Spectator ^ | 10/5/2012 | Robert Stacy McCain

FISHERVILLE, Virginia -- Randy Goettge left Leesburg about 3:30 p.m. Thursday and the normal drive time should have gotten him to the Romney-Ryan "Victory Rally" here by the announced start time of 6 p.m. Unfortunately for Goettge, about 10,000 other Virginians had similar plans, producing what was surely the biggest traffic jam in the history of Augusta County. Traffic was backed up for miles in every direction -- all the way from the Highway 285 exit to Interstate 81 four miles west -- and by the time Goettge found a place to park and walk the final mile to the Augusta Expo Center, it was 7:30 p.m. and the gates were already closed.

Goettge was by no means alone. Thousands more late-arriving supporters -- some of whom had driven from as far away as Richmond and the northern Virginia suburbs of Washington, D.C. -- stood on a hillside across from the outdoor arena where a fired-up sign-waving crowd was packed to fire-code capacity. However, the sound system was powerful enough to be heard at a quarter-mile distance and the giant TV screen was visible from the hillside, providing Goettge and the overflow crowd with an excellent view of the proceedings.

The massive turnout was proof that Mitt Romney's stunning victory in Wednesday's debate struck a spark of excitement, reviving a campaign that had sustained a month-long battering of negative media coverage. "The crowd was feeding off the energy from last night," said Amy Whitaker, who drove from Amherst County to attend the rally. "A lot of us didn't get to sleep until 2 in the morning, we were so hyped up.… We were just surprised [Romney] did so well, and how bad Obama did."

Ask yourself this question:

Are we better off now in our campaign against Obama than we were four years ago?

The answer is a resounding yes.

The difference between Mitt and McCain is the difference between day and night... or more accurately, the difference between intellect and dementia.

Something is afoot. Even on Friday, people in my office at work still were buzzing about Romney's debate performance Wednesday night. If Ryan can give a similar performance against Biden on Thursday night, the momentum for the Romney/Ryan ticket could be unstoppable.

This kind of reminds me of the 1980 campaign. People didn't start getting excited about Reagan until around mid-October. Up to that point, it was generally assumed that Carter would win re-election.

What we need now is a massive, positive advertising campaign. Something along the lines of Reagan's "Morning in American" message in the 1984 campaign. Many voters are sick of the cynicism and the negativity and are ripe for an uplifting message.

I still think McCain voted for Obama.

Let's remind ourselves and our fellow citizens that, as in 1776, the role of Divine Providence must be sought and acknowledged if we are to "throw off" the bonds of approaching tyranny which threaten the liberty of both ourselves and future generations.

I just love it when “Normal driving time’ is applied to getting to ANY special event...ball game—concert—campaign rally.

There should be one more question on every driver’s license exam....

How much EXTRA time......

I can't judge based upon the talk at work because I work in an office full of gun toting, flag waving, ex-military, right wingers. But we were all joking about the possibility of the one lefty in the office having to call in sick for depression.

One thing I have noticed is growing the number of right wing comments on the local paper's website which is usually the bastion of Che loving uber leftists.

I agree. I just had family over for some apple picking, coffee, cake, etc.

All anyone was talking about was Romney’s performance. And most of those buzzing were apolitical family members.

Coupled with Obama’s awful night, Romney scored much bigger than the media think. It could be a turning point that will be talked about in history, much like Reagan’s first debate with Carter.

Mega-dittoes.

That was the first presidential race I watched (as a fifteen year old who couldn't vote, so my first vote for POTUS was for Ronald Magnus in 1984) and I remember that something was just in the air after that debate.

Oh, and I live in ultra-left Oak Park IL, i.e. Berkeley on the border of Chicago. I’m seeing Romney signs in people’s yards. Not as many as the Obama signs (but there aren’t many of those) but in this zip code I can’t ever remember seeing this many Republican signs.

I think you’re right. McCain idolizes Obama as much as any leftist media schmuck does.
