KANSAS CITY, Mo. — For establishment Republicans, it is decision time in the Missouri Senate race.
Should they return to Representative Todd Akin’s corner?
Many quickly withdrew their support for Mr. Akin weeks ago after his controversial comments about abortion and belief that victims of “legitimate rape” have a biological mechanism to fight off pregnancy, hoping to force him aside so another Republican candidate could battle the Democratic incumbent, Senator Claire McCaskill.
But Mr. Akin called their bluff. He stayed in the race, reckoning that election math would oblige them to stick with him.
Now, with Mr. Akin’s name legally bound to the ballot, the election approaching and new polling data presenting a clearer idea of his chances, Republicans are deliberating whether to renege on their reneging.

Do you remember when a liberal used to post and get into arguments with freepers? I want to say his screen name had a b in it - maybe bill something. This was back in the mid to late 90’s if memory serves. Been a long time since liberals openly posted here.
Check this out Uncle Chip. The MO race will be an absolute nail bitter but anything and everything can happen between now and election eve. It is difficult for me to accept the National Republican Party’s treatment of Akin. The man is more conservative than Mitt Romney!

What on earth? Akin said no such thing. He said conception was rare in the case of a ‘legitimate’ (he meant forcible, not ‘ok’) rape.
Never did he even imply that a raped woman asks for pregnancy. What a notion.
The controversy is that it sounded like he thought some rapes are legitimate. Of course that is not what he meant.

Donna, you’re meeting the classic definition of a troll—someone who tries to hijack a thread and make it about a different subject. In your case you’re attempting to take a thread about Todd Akin and make it into an anti-Romney and an “it’s all about me” thread. It’s not about you and your jihad against the Republican’s presidential nominee who’s running against Obama and, hopefully, about to defeat him. It’s about Todd Akin and his attempt to defeat a despicable Obama tool from Missouri.
If you were truly a conservative, you wouldn’t be here campaigning against the Republican presidential candidate, you’d be commenting to Todd Akin’s struggle against the despicable Claire McCaskill in Missouri. Better yet, you’d be volunteering to help Akin’s campaign and/or donating to it—or trying to encourage others to do so. You’d be trying to get another conservative Senator elected to the Senate.
Here’s a link to Todd Akin’s website. Why not go there and start to do something actually productive for the conservative cause. These are desperate times for our nation—you have not been helpful with your anti-Romney jihad.
No. The implication is that if the woman becomes pregnant, the rape was not forcible. The rape is the “it” she was asking for, not the pregnancy.
Given that the War on Women is the only arrow left in the Democrat’s quiiver, this was a really, really (really-really-really) stupid thing to say.
It was this stupid statement that required the GOP to build a firewall around this guy to protect the rest of the party. This strategy is working very well, and the Democrat’s War on Women attacks have been ineffective.
And now it looks like Akin might actually win. Better still...
But if the National GOP had embraced Akin, they oould have lost it all, including the Missouri Senate Seat. We’re The Stupid Party, but we’re not that stupid.
I just donated $75.00. $25.00 to Akin and $50.00 to be allocated as needed by the PAC.

Obviously I disagree. The Senator does not believe, nor do any previous statements or actions support, the notion that if a women gets pregnant from a rape it is not really rape. I have been active in the pro-life movement for 25 years and have never heard the merest hint from the most solid pro-lifer of such a position. That is ridiculous, and I wouldn’t accuse even the most nutty Senator of such a position.
The word “legitimate” was the wrong word choice. It should have been “forcible” or “violent,” which would have been much clearer. Because you get pregnant from statutory rape as easily as from consensual sex; but not from forcible rape. This is a matter of statistics, not opinion.

No. But conception as a result of forcible rape is far less common than conception as a result of consensual sex. That’s all.

So, how the issue of the relative frequency of conception for forcible and non-forcible rape at all relevant from a public policy point of view? Which is to say, why is it something that a Senatorial candidate should be commenting on?
After all, if a pregnancy can result from forcible rape, it doesn’t matter, from a public policy point of view, if the rape is forcible, statutory, “legitimate” or any other type of rape you can imagine.
Missouri Rep. Todd Akin—who sparked a firestorm of criticism with his comments about “legitimate rape” in August—gave a speech on the House floor in 2008 in which he called those who perform abortions “terrorists” and claimed some do so on “women who are not actually pregnant.”
“It is no big surprise that we fight the terrorists because they are fundamentally un-American, and yet we have terrorists in our own culture called abortionists,” Akin said in the Jan. 22, 2008, speech. “One of the good pieces of news why we are winning this war is because there are not enough heartless doctors being graduated from medical schools. There is a real shortage of abortionists.
“Who wants to be at the very bottom of the food chain of medical profession?” Akin continued. “And what sort of places do these bottom-of-the-food-chain doctors work in? Places that are really a pit. You find that along with the culture of death go all kinds of other law-breaking: not following good sanitary procedure, giving abortions to women who are not actually pregnant, cheating on taxes, all these kinds of things, misuse of anesthetics so that people die or almost die.”

Yes, of course it is still possible, and people result from the act of rape. Oprah Winfrey was fathered by a rapist as a matter of fact.
I can’t really speak to whether Akin should have commented on it. He was probably asked a question, I don’t know, and maybe he should have demurred.
The point is he was not defending the act of rape in ANY way, and FReepers of all people should not be acting as though he did.
Akin is an excellent conservative and deserves our support.
Akin has my support. It was just necessary for the GOP to firewall him, to preserve the electoral prospects of the rest of the party. This strategy has been working. The War on Women theme is attack is dead letter.
And, best of all, Akin might actually win his race!
