Obama: Columbus Day a Time to ‘Reflect on Tragic Burdens Tribal Communities Bore’

CNSNews.com) – In his presidential proclamation recognizing Columbus Day issued last week, President Barack Obama said the holiday was a day to “celebrate our heritage as people born of many histories and traditions” and a time to “reflect on the tragic burdens tribal communities bore” since the explorer arrived on the North American continent in 1492.

“Today, we recall the courage and the innovative spirit that carried Christopher Columbus and his crew from a Spanish port to North America, and we celebrate our heritage as a people born of many histories and traditions,” the Oct. 5 proclamation says.

“When the explorers laid anchor in the Bahamas, they met indigenous peoples who had inhabited the Western hemisphere for millennia,” the proclamation states.

“As we reflect on the tragic burdens tribal communities bore in the years that followed, let us commemorate the many contributions they have made to the American experience, and let us continue to strengthen the ties that bind us today.”

The proclamation notes that this year marks the 520th anniversary of “that fateful day in 1492.”

It also credits Columbus’ “spirit of discovery” with inspiring “entrepreneurs, sailors and scientists, explorers of the physical world and chroniclers of the human spirit.”

The proclamation also notes that Columbus has “inspired generations of Italian immigrants.”

On April 30, 1934, Congress, by joint resolution, modified the U.S. Code requesting the president proclaim the second Monday of October each year as “Columbus Day.”

Maybe he’s talking about Kenyan tribes. That’s about the only tribes he would be familiar with.

” I’m sure that Obama loves his country. Maybe some day we’ll find out which one it is. “

He loves every one of the 57 states of America equally.

Exactly! Remember, NO ONE in 1492 had ANY idea how infectious diseases were transmitted, much less of the causative organisms involved. It is frustrating to hear supposedly educated people project present-day knowledge back half a millennium!

If Columbus had not found the Americas, the Portuguese would have done it a few years later. Finding the Americas was inevitable.

And if a boat load of Indians had found the OLD WORLD, they would have returned to the Americas and carried all those Old World diseases with them.

Not our fault Indians did not have any natural immunity from the diseases.

Not to defend Obama (Believe me!), but Columbus first sighted and landed on the island of San Salvador, which is part of the Bahamas chain. He moved on from there.

If was nobody’s fault. It was inevitable. It is part of history we should be aware of but I don’t know what is gained by spending a day once a year to contemplate it.

He knew exactly what he was saying. He hates the fact that this country contains mostly the descendents of Europeans. He hates Europeans because of colonialism.

I heard a snarky (can't remember who) commentator say that Roosevelt created Columbus day when he discovered the Italian vote.

1937: Year Columbus Day was declared a national holiday.

Don't forget - Columbus also brought the curse of the wheel to the new world.

And that led to the curse of the SUV.

And that led to global climate change which brought about the impending destruction of the atmosphere.

All of which has put us on the path to the eventual destruction of the entire world and the end of life on earth.

So you might say that Chris Columbus ultimately bears responsiblity for the death of every living creature and plant on the entire planet.

I have said it many times before-

Obama was never taught HOW to think, only WHAT to think.
