Mexican Authorities: Cartel Leader's Body Stolen from Funeral Home

MEXICO CITY - The attorney general in Coahuila said two armed gunmen stole the body one of the most infamous cartel figures in Mexico. He said the body of Heriberto Lazcano was taken from the funeral home the military was using.

The Mexican military said Lazcano died in a firefight in the state of Coahuila, which is located next to Tamaulipas.

According to the Mexican military, forensic experts ran several tests to verify the man killed was Lazcano. They compared his fingerprints and checked his index, middle and thumb fingers against Lazcano's criminal record. They also say they compared his facial features and took a DNA sample.

Drug war analyst Sylvia Longmire calls Lazcano's death a symbolic victory. She says, "Los Zetas have grown to become the largest threat to security in Mexico and the United States. He was one of the founding members. He ran Zetas for a decade."

However, Longmire doesn't expect Lazcano's death to cause major changes for the cartel. In August, he handed over power to Miguel Angel Trevino, his second-in-command.

"As far as his disappearance form the narco fold in Mexico, I don't think it's going to have any impact on how Zetas go about their business," she added.

I guess the Mexican authorities missed a great opportunity to take out about a dozen of his followers. All they had to do was place troops inside the funeral home to slab his followers. Assuming the Mexican authorities were reluctant to do that, they could have placed a GPS tag into the coffin and one into his body and then descended upon the cartel’s headquarters taking out much of the leadership of that cartel.
