(Reuters) - Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney, in an apparent fresh move toward the political center, said on Tuesday if elected he would not pursue specific legislation targeting abortion.
"There's no legislation with regards to abortion that I'm familiar with that would become part of my agenda," Romney told the Des Moines Register's editorial board during a campaign visit to Van Meter, Iowa.
Romney's comment could be construed as reassuring some women voters who have had reservations about his candidacy. In recent weeks he has taken some steps toward the political center as he tries to attract independent voters before the November 6 election.
Some conservatives would like legislation aimed at limiting abortions, which were legalized in the U.S. Supreme Court's landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling.
Reacting to Romney's comments, President Barack Obama's campaign sharply criticized the Republican, saying he had previously pledged to appoint Supreme Court justices who would overturn Roe v. Wade.

This is the new phase in the media against Romney, just like clockwork.
Misleading headline of the year.
“There’s no legislation with regards to abortion that I’m familiar with that would become part of my agenda,” does not equal “Romney says won’t pursue new abortion laws”
vs.
President Barack Obama's campaign sharply criticized the Republican, saying he had previously pledged to appoint Supreme Court justices who would overturn Roe v. Wade.
==========================
I see no contradiction here.
There is no legislation that is out there at this time.
The Republicans want a Human life ammendment to the constitution, but one is not written and not in line to be voted on. It is very difficult to change the Constitution.
It is much easier to change the SCOTUS.
This is just a fact. At this point there is no bills pertaining to abortion that would be voted much less signed by Romney as president.
“There’s no legislation with regards to abortion that I’m familiar with that would become part of my agenda,”
That’s how I want it, because you aren’t familiar with this issue. Leave abortion legislation to our experts in Congress. No need to get into the weeds on that one. Just focus of fixing the economy, we’ll handle the rest, including ending the money pipeline to Planned Parenthood.
Of course notice this same media has still not made a point about Obama adding, for the very 1st time, a Taxpayer funded abortion on demand up to birth plank to the 2012 Democrat party platform.
The only radical on Abortion in this election is 0bama, a fact very carefully covered up by the Mass Media
Does this mean he is doing nothing about late term abortions????? He better do something about that AT LEAST.
Romney is pro abortion. Or, at the very least, not willing to challenge the law that legalizes the killing of babies.
It’s Obama’s support of partial-birth abortion that really horrifies me.
This means nothing, so nobody should freak out and have a cow.
What we NEED to change this issue is a new Supreme Court, and he has pledged a conservative court.
There is no pending legislation in any event that would come before his desk so his comment is EXACTLY accurate.
Smart man. No need to campaign on these issues to distract away from the biggest issue: This abortion of a president.
We need to get a rusty, AIDS-infected clothes hanger to pry him and his ugly wife out of the White House.
Of course notice this same media has still not made a point about Obama adding, for the very 1st time, a Taxpayer funded abortion on demand up to birth plank to the 2012 Democrat party platform.
Notice also the ABR crowd here wants to ignore that inconvenient fact. At worse Romney will maintain the current status quo, Obama will radically advance the pro Death agenda.
I guess you’re talking about a federal law to override any state laws permitting 3rd trimester abortions.
I would hope Romney would support that, but to get that thru Congress first means we have to take the Senate.
SCOTUS appointments could rid this scourge ultimately, but we have to eat the elephant a bite at a time.
He doesn’t have to. There isn’t much for the government “to pursue” given that Roe is still on the books. All a President Romney needs to do is appoint more Scalia’s and Thomases to the Supreme Court. That’s where abortion laws are decided.
One of several reasons I will not vote for Romney. All my conscience brain cells would never let be vote for Obama ... so, I will not vote for either.
There is no “law” that legalizes abortion. Roe v. Wade, Doe v. Bolton, etc., are not laws.
Nevertheless, a simple majority in Congress COULD remove abortion from the jurisdiction of the Supreme Court.
LOL
White Horse God from Kolob Flip Slick Willard Romney will do nothing to stop the genocide of the unborn.
Its all about getting the blue blood country club banker faction of the Washingtonians in charge so they can redistribute to their friends and allies the cash extorted from our paychecks by the IRS from us chumps outside the Beltway instead of the communist faction of the Washingtonians.
Wake up and smell the coffee.
This degenerate coward snake oil salesman cult leader from a long line of degenerate coward snake oil salesmen is nothing to celebrate.
He supports the homosexual agenda as well.
He has been a faithful supporter of abortion since he was 11, I think that was his own statement
If Romney does anything regarding changing of abortion law it will be liberalization in line with UN directives.
Not laws? Please explain to the uninitiated.
Romney or Obama will be the next President.
Romney agrees with you 85% of the time, Obama agrees with you 0%
NOTHING in life is ever perfect. Certainly nothing in politics ever is. Back in the 1980s people like you were ranting how Reagan had betrayed the Conservative movement. Now you all want to claim him as your political god father.
A rational adult accepts that 85% of something is better then 100% of what you stand against. Romney will work with you, Obama will work against you. A rational adult mind would accept 85% of something is better then 100% of nothing.
And spare me the self serving rhetoric about waiting for 2016. I am been hearing the same thing from you die harders since 1988. You always want to excuse your inaction this election by claiming you will get them next election. Well we are at the last ditch now. There is no more falling back. You either stand here or there will be no place left to stand.
So just strip away the self serving rationalizations and admit sour grapes that your candidate lost the 2012 GOP nomination is the motivating factor here.
A Human Life Amendment does not require ANY action of the President at all, the POTUS is not involved in the Amendment process.
It is hard to see how we can get a conservative Congress, however, without a major Romney blow out this November.
Also? The Hyde Amendment, baring Federal Funds for abortion, is still law but ignored.
Also? The repeal of Obamacare is required to protect life. Romney says he will do that.
Also? Romney HAS spoken about the violation of religious liberties involved in the abortion and contraceptive mandates in Obamacare.
If you are really prolife? Vote for Romney.
There is no other option.
An Obama win institutionalizes abortion on demand in our health care laws forever.
You have been a faithful liar about Romney since he won the nomination.
Try pyring open your welded shut mind rather then cling to your sour grapes that your canidate did not win the 2012 GOP Nomination
FACTS are at the link. Why don’t you finally try LEARNING them.

Lying is still a sin. The 9th Commandment against bearing false witness is not a suggestion. You will answer to God for your actions one day. You might want to seriously rethink your strategy here
He’d have his hands full with the economy, Iran, etc. The states will pursue this issue. Romney’s main role woud be to appoint the right kind of judges
(and that’s where the people and Congress would have to hold his feet to the fire).
Presumption are thy middle name. I had no candidate in mind going into this debacle, just a hope that someone with moral values would come out of it. Didn't happen.
What really needs to change? I’ll tell you what needs to change.
Women and MEN need to change. They need to get some morals. They need to stop thinking of life as something disposable, as something inconvenient to them. they need to stop being so materialistic, stop thinking so much about what others think. They need to start thinking more about marriage, about committment, about family, about what happens after this life.
We have these laws because Americans WANTED these laws — and still want them. We need a change of HEART in America, not always a change in political leadership towards this end — we’re always, always going to have this opposition to it.
but we’re seeing the effects of it in terms of demographics and immigration. No one wants to admit it ...we’ve contracepted ourselves into a corner, and it’s not going to improve unless we change in many ways. Romney can’t fix that on his own.
Laws are passed by legislatures.
So, there was never a law passed that made abortion a law? Then why did the Supreme Court get involved. And why is it ok to kill babies?
Please help me here, if the right to abort is not a law what is it?
Don’t get my response wrong, I’m overwhelming curious.

There are two men running for President of the United States. Make a choice, it is the easy way out to say that you just can not vote for one of them.
And I will take the easy way out. In all good conscience I can vote for neither.
Let’s just hope he holds firm on appointing pro-life Supreme Court justices. That’s the real abortion related issue at stake.
This statement by Mitt Romney does seem pretty supportive of the homosexual agenda.
“” I am more convinced than ever before that as we seek to establish full equality for Americas gay and lesbian citizens, I will provide more effective leadership than my opponent (Ted Kennedy).
I am not unaware of my opponents considerable record in the area of civil rights, or the commitment of Massachusetts voters to the principle of equality for all Americans. For some voters it might be enough for me to simply match my opponents record in this area. But I believe we can and must do better. If we are to achieve the goals we share, we must make equality for gays and lesbians a mainstream concern. My opponent cannot do this. I can and will.””
“”One issue I want to clarify concerns President Clintons dont ask, dont tell, dont pursue military policy. I believe that the Clinton compromise was a step in the right direction. I am also convinced that it is the first of a number of steps that will ultimately lead to gays and lesbians being able to serve openly and honestly in our nations military. That goal will only be reached when preventing discrimination against gays and lesbians is a mainstream concern, which is a goal we share.””
“I think the old standby definitions of who votes for which party have been blown away in this campaign. I think people recognize that Im not a partisan Republicanthat Im someone who is moderate, and that my views are progressive.
-Mitt Romney (2002)
Willard-
He supports the homosexual agenda as well.

yes he does...
In your face to the Conservative kind of support too...
It is his own statement, but he was 16 and a republican intern when he became dedicated to abortion in 1963, not 11.
This article feels like a distraction.
Thank you. I believe this is the LAST election of consequence. If we do not repeal Obamacare, another entitlement, and so much more that Obama is getting ready to unleash including all of the treaties in the offing. We are heading for the rocks. I am giving all of my time and much of my treasure to get Romney in. This is not a sporting event this is it. If Obama stays in, I do not think people have really thought through their plan B. What would happen to FR? This administration does not handle criticism well.
Romney is now pro-life and I believe him.
"He has pledged a conservative court." WTH does that mean to Mittler (who calls himself a "severe conservative")? He is running out of new sketches to etch and going back to the old sketches he knew so well. What a despicable POS! Will he be appointing "conservative" judges who will maintain the mass murderous status quo???
Sice Romney has grabbed the poll lead and he is going to win the election, get ready for the distractions from the haters and the Obama boot lickers.
Wow. That’s totally not what he said at all.
Media making stuff up as they go.
You believe him even since his August 27 interview with CBS? Do you really think that he changed all of his life views for this campaign, and that it was all miraculously a real conversion of a 60 year old politician, and that it was just a coincidence that it matched his run for the GOP nomination?
August 27th, 2012. CBS Interview:
PELLEY: Well, the platform as written at this convention for the Republicans does not allow for exceptions on abortion with regard to the health of the mother or rape or incest. Is that where you are?
ROMNEY: No. My position has been clear throughout this campaign. Im in favor of abortion being legal in the case of rape and incest, and the health and life of the mother.
