“We need to donate more so they can expand the server farm and get a fatter pipe.”

Actually they might try dusting off and re-installing the 2000 era servers and software. It sure worked better.

On the other hand we followed the same pattern here as during the last debate. FR was fine(No Slowdown) until we actually hit 9PM eastern time. Then it went out like a switch was flipped and it did not work at all. I am really suspicious that someone is “Shutting” it down with some kind of attack. Of course that would be John’s job to figure that out and put a stop to it.

"Maybe posters need to stop posting pictures, baseball scores and complaints about how slow the thread is. Just post what happens."

There were very few pictures posted on the V.P. debate thread tonight, and it was slower than the first debate thread, which had multiple graphics posted.

FR's failure during these crucial live events has nothing to do with FR's infrastructure...........

No, it is as a result of a misplaced punctuation mark.

Dumb ass cat.

Servers are tricky especially the web service. When a server receives a lot of web requests (port 80), there’s only so many that can happen at a time. Each time you click on the site, fresh, that sends another request. Since there’s not a multimillion dollar backing (i.e. twitter, facebook etc al.) with servers, load balancing and the such, the server can become quickly bogged down. And who’s to say a lot of trolls weren’t hitting the servers at the same time?

In the early days of FR, a group of us used to get together in an IRC chat room. We did that for quite a while, then it eventually went by the wayside. Got to meet a lot of great people through that chat room, and we all met in person a few times for FR events in Washington. I still keep in touch with a few of them.

The solution is that we avoid FR during times that are expected to have a high volume of traffic.

I wonder if the Sharks on ABC would buy into that business model.

I agree. FR magically went down when the debate started and just as magically came up when it was over. There had to be almost as many FReepers online just before and just after, so it shouldn't be strictly traffic related.

I agree. I was not able to get onto the thread once. Same with the Romney / Obama debates.

Am using Wifi at home - never a problem otherwise.

Very, very frustrating not being able to read the threads during the debates.

Not saying avoid. Just pointing out how web services work on a server. It's a tricky thing to get it to work flawlessly 100% of the time, especially in times of high traffic. It's frustrating sure but it's completely understandable considering the work that's involved and the programming that's involved.

Even if this site was load balanced across 10 servers, it's very well possible that there was enough traffic tonight to bog them down. After all, FR is the best place to be for a live thread. A lot of work goes into keeping a server online, esp during high traffic events.

Since you are intent on taking up bandwidth with things grammatical, let's address the misuse of quotation marks with commas and periods.

Perhaps a review of using commas in a series would be helpful as well.

Images don’t matter because they aren’t hosted at FR. Your browser loads the base page from FR, then separately makes connections to wherever the images are.

Well, Jackass, if you want Jim Rob to charge for membership then perhaps he could afford better servers. If you are on FR you are on here for free, unless you donate and that is voluntary. The fact is if everyone who uses this terrific site would donate 5 bucks a month we wouldn’t have slow live feed nights because Jim Rob could afford to buy new and better servers. Do you expect him to buy them out of his own funds, funds he would never recoup because he doesn’t operate this site on a profit basis. People like you whining about FR give me a pain right in the a**. F***ing jerk.

Let’s do that, sure. And let’s review what every adviser of good Internet practices since time immemorial, uhm, advises against, and what takes up a lot of bandwidth:

(1) Threads consisting of nothing more than kvetching,
(2) Posts consisting of nothing more than something like the word: “Agreed”, or “I agree”,
(3) What I already mentioned: illiteracy. Every fool, every drunk in the gutter has an opinion. And every other fool is convinced that the world is anxious to experience the vomit of his ungrammatically expressed opinion.

Maybe some technical savvy FReepers would be interested in giving JimRob a hand with upping the bandwith and capacity around here. The guy does the best with what he can afford; donating men and material will go a long ways to improve things, and I’m sure some enterprising FReepers would like to flex their technological muscles. Every bit helps.

Ah, you make good points.

How well does memcache work with Perl? At least that’s what script lang this site is largely written in AFAIK.

I’d also wonder if Perl is more server-intensive than something like PHP.

And at time, looking at the routes would seem to indicate slowdowns outside FR.

How well does memcache work with Perl? At least that’s what script lang this site is largely written in AFAIK.

memcache is a service, like http: http://memcached.org/

So, you simply need a client API. And there are many:

https://code.google.com/p/memcached/wiki/Clients

I’d also wonder if Perl is more server-intensive than something like PHP.

Perl and PHP are both interpreted languages. There really isn't enough difference between the two to be perceptible to the end-user, as long as there were no serious implementation errors.

You can change the length of a page of posts. So, it has to be generated each time, with a query to the database.

Even simple filesystem caching would probably work.

The problem with a simple filesystem would be concurrency. You would have to serialize writes. And, once you create a lot of individual files, you introduce new problems with the metadata.

A reverse proxy cache like Varnish would probably take some of the heat off.

I think FR is already using squid as a reverse proxy, based on some of the errors that I've seen. That may have been in the past.

Indeed, all user authentication data and the most recent week of posts would probably fit easily in a few gigabytes of RAM. The challenge is how to architect access to it.

Memcache is relatively easy to use as a layer between the application layer and the database layer. That's not the most efficient implementation, but it's not a wholesale re-architecture effort.

I don't know the answer either. Every time something is going on ...debate etc. FR is unavailable. I think it is because the site growth outpaces capacity. Especially in this kind of an election year too. BUT...this has been an ongoing issue Freepathon after Freepathon....

FR runs pretty clean and lean, but I wonder if there are some features that could be ‘turned off’ on nights like last night.

I know election day or night I won't even bother visiting FR...I won't be able to get on...so why frustrate myself?

I go here: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/freerepublic2/ , but even being on this alternative isn't effective. Most folks are just posting complaints, instead of starting a new ‘live debate thread.’ Or perhaps WE as FReepers should anticipate this issue for the next debate and say Freepers East of the Mississippi use the yahoo group and West of the Mississippi use FR. For the last debate we could switch it up.

So instead of complaining....lets find a workable alternative for now!

The one and only solution is for those who actually own and operate FR to make it more reliable.
