The EU wins the Nobel Peace Prize: 40 years on, satire really is now obsolete
Telegraph - UK ^ | October 12, 2012 | Daniel Hannan

Like most people, I reacted to the news that the EU had won the Nobel Peace Prize with a shout of delighted mirth. In picking this moment – just as the euro brings national antagonisms to a new high – the committee members have revealed a sublime comic genius. It is 40 years since, hearing that the award had gone to Henry Kissinger, Tom Lehrer declared 'satire is now obsolete'. But even Lehrer at his most fanciful couldn't have imagined the committee passing over Irena Sendler, who had repeatedly risked her life to save children from the Warsaw Ghetto, in favour of Al Gore. None of his conceits was as bizarre as Barack Obama picking up the award before he had properly started his presidency (although that one turned out to be oddly apt: those hopey-changey early days were his high point). But this? This beats everything.

I've made the argument at length before. In brief, the EU is not a cause, but a symptom of a European peace born out of the defeat of fascism, the spread of democracy and the security of the Nato alliance. Its ruling dogma – the idea that nationalism causes war – is false. The most lethal wars in Europe's history were caused, first by religious differences, then by ideological ones. The nation-state has, over the years, proved itself a remarkably stable vessel for justice and democracy. A Europe of nations, each at ease within more or less ethnographic borders, will be more tranquil than a patchwork of misaligned frontiers, irredenti communities and discontented minorities. Jamming peoples into a single state against their will is rarely conducive to either democracy or goodwill. It didn't work for the Habsburgs,...

Candy coated popcorn, peanuts and a Nobel Peace Prize....that’s what you get with Cracker Jacks.

No, Obama winning was the nadir. At least the EU has been around for a while and has a record, though of course the peace has nothing to do with them. Obama got his for making a couple of speeches one summer.

By the way, have they ever honored a giant organization like this before? They might as well give the prize to the concept of supranationalism. Then it’s only a matter of time before peace itself wins.

They shoved through the EU structure, sort of like Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid and Barack Obama shoved through Obamacare.

It could have been worse. They could have given it to Bill Clinton who was actually nominated. However its not such a bad choice. When you consider the utter devastation that Europe endured between 1914 and 1945, the cultural destruction, the irreplaceable genetic losses, an entity that has made war and summary imprisonment and death less likely, is a great accomplishment given what’s left of Europe’s recent history.

So, how many times have they awarded the Nobel Peace Prize to NATO???

That alliance REALLY saved Western Europe from the Soviets and made the EU possible!

Given the utter destruction that the Europeans inflicted on themselves from 1914-1918 and 1939-1945,the only entnty that rescued them on both occasions was —— (wait for it)—— AMERICA!

How many times has America been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize?

No, no, no. You’re confusing Europe since ‘45 with the EU. They are not the same. Europe was at peace, or at least not engaged in general outright conventional war, for decades prior to the EU.

They can’t give it to Europe as a whole, since that’s too vague even for them, and they can’t give it to NATO, God forbid. They probably already gave it to the UN, or they’re saving it for next time. So it goes to supranationalism.

And the givers of this “prize” no doubt like what the specter of a country WANTING TO LEAVE THE EU would look and how it would be “interpreted” (Are they against peace - for war?).

Nobel Peace Prize awarded to a profoundly undemocratic institution? Who’s next? The Assad government?

Created to save EUrope, instead, it has enslaved EUrope to an indifferent ruling class who could care less what EUrope looks like in 100 years.

Nobel prizes are like cracker jack prizes these days.. only they include a large reward that can be blown on more hookers and drugs.. and likely will be, more times than not.

At least and amazingly it did not go the Slick!!!!

The Nobel Awards used to mean something because the committee use some thought rather than insider political cliqueishness.

Nobel has worn out its welcome, at least the “Peace” part. Nobama was the bottom of the barrel, impossible to go to anyone less deserving. The next one will go to some animal like the Kangeroo Rat and the next to a plant, maybe marijuana and then to some type of rock. The Committee should just divide up all that cash and award it to each other, it would mean the same.

For accuracy, they should rename it the Nobel Theft Prize.
