Debate moderator Candy Crowley's secret of success? Transcendental meditation
Daily Mail ^ | 15 Oct 12 | Toby Harnden

Candy Crowley, moderator of the second presidential debate may have a trick up her sleeve if things get tense between Barack Obama and Mitt Romney - she practices transcendental meditation twice a day.

The CNN anchor, who will be in charge of the 'town hall' style debate at Hofstra university on Long Island, New York, took up meditation after the 2008 election and managed to achieve what one website called a 'natural state of restful alertness'. She also credits the practice with her weight loss.

And in a campaign in which red meat rhetoric designed to attract party 'base' voters is ever present, she is a committed vegetarian.

In May, Crowley gave the commencement address for students at the Maharishi University of Management. The university was set up in 1974 by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, who created transcendental meditation, in Fairfield, Iowa.

Its mission is to 'provide a consciousness-based education holistic, relevant education for a successful life — not just a career — to ensure our happiness and to make real contributions in the world' and 'meditation and spiritual growth, self-exploration, higher consciousness, spirituality, and inner peace through the transcendental meditation technique'.

The meditation involves the repeated repetition of a sound, called a mantra, and is practiced for 15–20 minutes twice per day, while sitting with closed eyes.

Crowley told the gathered students: 'To get to where you want to go, you first have to stand and be who you are,' she said.

This was in the news last week:

Excerpt:

If You’re Too Busy to Meditate, Read This

By Peter Bregman
Harvard Business Review Blog Network
October 12, 2012

This morning, like every morning, I sat cross-legged on a cushion on the floor, rested my hands on my knees, closed my eyes, and did nothing but breathe for 20 minutes.

People say the hardest part about meditating is finding the time to meditate. This makes sense: who these days has time to do nothing? It’s hard to justify.

Meditation brings many benefits: It refreshes us, helps us settle into what’s happening now, makes us wiser and gentler, helps us cope in a world that overloads us with information and communication, and more. But if you’re still looking for a business case to justify spending time meditating, try this one: Meditation makes you more productive.

How? By increasing your capacity to resist distracting urges.

Research shows http://blogs.hbr.org/bregman/2009/06/how-to-teach-yourself-restrain.html that an ability to resist urges will improve your relationships, increase your dependability, and raise your performance. If you can resist your urges, you can make better, more thoughtful decisions. You can be more intentional about what you say and how you say it. You can think about the outcome of your actions before following through on them.

So, her weight must be due to even larger quantities of alcohol than I previously assumed.

TM slowly errodes the mind until one becomes completely disfunctional.

One guy I worked with began to studder so bad that he had to carry a note pad to communicate, and finally had to be institutionalized.

I always skip the novocaine when I visit my dentist.

I want to transcend dental medication.

Shades of yellow and a goofy hat are not Candy's best look.

If she went outside dressed like that, people would be hailing her down, thinking she was a cab.

Town hall? Yeah, right. Candy picks 20 question from the hundred or so written questions... and oddly enough she picks the majority of the questions that will favor Obama. The people are props. The twenty questions have already been chosen. Moderators: one old liberal, one rude liberal and now one fat liberal. Yep, that’s diversity....

Read of Christ casting out demons.

TM is demon calling. Your mantra is the name of the demon that you are giving control of your life over to.

Whatever, I bet you can’t cite one instance where a person said a word to himself mentally for 20 minutes, then turned to evil and a worshipper of Satan.

Full disclosure: I have never practiced TM and I think it is moronic to pay thousands of dollars to somebody to get a word to chant.

But being stupid is not the same thing as being Satanic and evil.

Christians are compelled to tell the truth as a matter of faith and I find your attempt to accuse people of doing something that you can’t prove to be true as quite troubling and exceedingly dishonest.

You have not one shred of evidence that people who practice meditation are calling upon demons and the devil.

And you have no evidence to support that people who meditate are evil either.

i meditate and am neither satanic nor stupid nor did i spent a lot of money. i can drop my bp 10-15 points by sitting quietly. i don’t have a word or a chant, just focus on my breathing. plus my tinnitus is my own white noise.

my associates on the left may accuse me of sputtering nonsense but.....

W. called Candy C. "Dulce" - Spanish for sweet or candy, I think.

He had catchy nicknames for press corps folks and others, too.
