Can Barack Obama Mount a Credible Debate Comeback?
abc ^ | October 16, 2012

Nervous Democrats reeling from President Barack Obama's lackluster debate performance and seemingly sudden change of fortunes in the polls are being comforted by one thought: when it counts, his supporters say, he always pulls though.

"So far every time, he's done it," said one former Obama administration aide. "He's the cat with the nine lives; at the end of the day the fundamental still favor him."

Obama's Democratic allies are hoping that his next debate performance will undo the damage of his first showing, and that once again, Obama will successfully pull out a last-minute victory.

Obama campaign aides have begun using words like "aggressive" and "passionate" to describe the Obama voters will see in the second presidential debate on Tuesday.

"He didn't meet his own expectations," said Obama campaign adviser Robert Gibbs on CNN's State of the Union, Sunday. "He knew when he walked off that stage, and he also knew as he's watched the tape of that debate, that he's got to be more energetic."

According to Bill Galston, senior fellow of governance at the Brookings Institution and former Clinton administration senior advisor, when Obama is down, his competitive instinct kicks in.

"I can only imagine how an intensely competitive person is receiving the negative reviews his debate performance garnered," Galston said. "I've got to believe there's fire in his belly now to go and turn this around in the second debate."

And as New York Times Columnist Maureen Dowd put it in her column following the debate, Obama "performs better when his back is against the wall; he has some subconscious need to put himself in challenging positions."

I predict he is going to trip up big time, tonight. He’s going to say something glaringly stupid and/or his demeanor is going to be very ugly.

The expectations are so low for Barry that if he just doesn’t fall down and drool on himself they will declare him the winner. Candy Crowley’s job is to help him stutter through it. She will be the 3rd debater like Radditz.

Lord, I’m sick of this silly game. Over the course of a month it went from it’s all over, Mitt should pack it in now to Mitt shocks the world, Obama has no hope to Obama’s the comeback kid, Mitt never had a shot. All of it utterly made up. They want it to like a football game, with momentum shifting back and forth, basically so they have something to talk about.

I think we all know solid chunks vote Pub or Dem no matter what, and the rest, the ones everone’s always fighting over, make up their minds in the booth.

When Obama says he saved jobs, Romney can ask Obama why they had to lower the total number of jobs in order to bring the unemployment rate down? How can Obama save jobs and reduce the job count at the same time?

No.

1) Obama’s record is miserable and undefendable.

2) Obama is not good at being challenged.

3) Romney is an experienced business leader who has had to take over strugling companies and make them profitable. Romney was the governor of a whole state of moonbats. To Romney, Obama is a lightweight.

4) Romney is naturally amiable. Obama is going to have to manufacture a persona for tonight’s debate.

5) Romney has had a year’s worth of real practice in the primaries with the likes of Newt Gingrich.

6) Obama has never had a tough debate opponent before Romney. Never.

I have racked my brain trying to remember when he has even done well without a teleprompter or in debate before and I can't recall a single instance.

On top of this, he has had nothing but softball interviews for the last 3 and 1/2 years and rarely takes tough questions in his even rarer press conferences.

If he does pull off a surprise victory, it will be totally out of character and something not predictable from experience.

He knew when he walked off that stage

LOL. Keep your stories straight, guys. Before we heard that he left the stage thinking that he won and was surprised when everyone told him he bombed.
