For months, Pennsylvania was considered a cakewalk for Democrats, with Sen. Bob Casey easily cruising to reelection and its 20 electoral votes in the bag for President Barack Obama.
But enter Republican Tom Smith and his personal fortune, and suddenly the Keystone State has the potential of upending the national political landscape. Buoyed by a tightening presidential race here, Smith a no-name GOP Senate candidate and self-funding multi-millionaire has suddenly made Republicans bullish about picking off the Keystone State to make Mitch McConnell majority leader and Mitt Romney more competitive here.
He wasnt on any endangered list, Rep. Bob Brady, the Democratic congressman from the Philadelphia area, said of Casey. But he is now.
Whats happening in Pennsylvania reflects a national trend: Romney has risen in the polls following his first debate performance, giving him new opportunities in states seen as prime Democratic terrain. And a rapidly shifting Senate landscape has prompted GOP leaders to reassess Democratic-leaning states like Connecticut and Pennsylvania, putting the Northeast suddenly at the heart of the GOPs dwindling hopes of winning a Senate majority
Polls have shown theres a reason for Republicans to believe they have some hope here. Two public polls in the past 10 days have suggested that Smiths ad campaign where hes dubbed Casey as an invisible senator has erased the Democrats double digit lead, dropping his lead down to single digits, with an Allentown Morning Call poll even putting the Democrats advantage at 2 points. According to a Quinnipiac poll, Romney has sliced Obamas 12-point lead down to 4, while a GOP poll released Friday even put Romney ahead by 4 points here, and Smith up by 2.

PA is fool’s gold!
Pennsylvania will be red.
Wonderful news! Guess those bitterly clinging to their Bibles here have been putting them to good use!
Pennsylvania is a nice obtuse counter attack for the Teams of Obomites flooding Ohio. Let’s hope this finesse pays off well.
I’m schizophrenic about the whole election, one day I’m like “Yea, we have this in the bag by a huge win” while other days I’ll cower and afraid to read politico.com.
We get over exuberant because most of us just can’t see why anybody in their right mind would vote for Obama.
I’m not counting on it, but it would be wonderful if Romney took PA. It would definitely deal a huge blow to Obama’s chances on election night.
I live in Lancaster Pa. I am originally from the Scranton Wilkes Barre area. I was a strong supporter of Bob Casey SENIOR when he was Governor of Pa. The very reason I left the Democratic Party was because in the 1992 Democratic convention they refused to let Bob Casey speak because he was pro-life. His son is capitalizing on his dad’s good name and even claims to be Pro-Life.
As we get closer to the election here...I am starting to see more and more Romney signs around. I hope it is a sign of things to come. But too many democrats vote the party no matter who is the candidate. That is especially true in Lackawanna and Luzerne Counties even though there is a large percentage of Catholics and pro-life Catholics who live there. In fact Scranton Pa was practically considered the Capital of the pro life movement.
I have a feeling its different this year. The ground is shifting in PA and Romney is a very good fit with the state’s suburban voters. He isn’t frightening at all.
I think the Keystone State will go Red on Election Night!
I’m putting Tom Smith on my prayer list!
GO ROMNEY AND TOM SMITH!
But it has a Republican governor and Senator Pat Toomey, as of 2010. It could happen.

IF PA wants to keep up the economic activity that has been generated with natural gas and fracking . . . they better vote GOP. O will shut them down in a second term.
And the other part . . . I hope the GOP gets new leadership for BOTH the House and the Senate and kick Boehner and McConnel to the curb. Ummm Allen West for the House and Jim DeMint or maybe Rand Paul IF his nutty Dad and his followers would go vote GOP rather than sit home. Please, no more Boehner or McConnell.
We biTTer clingers will be hosting an all-you-can-eat crow dinner here at FR on 07 Nov ;-)
(either that or i'm movin' to OK .. lol)
In the main I agree with Cathy but the senate race may have changed the calculus there. I’d still be hesitant to pour money into a state that always leaves republicans standing alone and dumbfounded at the altar but I have come to learn that Mitt Romney is a very smart, capable and calculating candidate so if his private polling is telling him it’s worth a shot I believe it.
It has always puzzled me how the Pennsylvania contingent at the annual March for Life is so robust and yet Pa. is so democrat.
PA wants jpobs and Obama’s EPA wants to kill them. JOBS WILL WIN OUT.
New Apple Product?
Good for Tom Smith. Bob Casey is a real piece of *.
If Smith can pull this off, he really deserves our thanks.
