Utah newspaper endorses Obama over Romney
Washington Times ^ | 10/20/2012

One of Utah's largest newspapers, located in the heart of Mormon country, has endorsed President Obama over Republican challenger Mitt Romney.

The Salt Lake Tribune endorsed Mr. Obama on Friday in an editorial that praised the president for engineering passage of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to stimulate the economy and accused Mr. Romney of flip-flopping and being "willing to say anything to get elected."

The paper acknowledged that their choice may be surprising to some, considering Mr. Romney's Mormon faith and his leadership and financial turnaround of the 2002 Winter Olympics held in Salt Lake City.

The Tribune also endorsed Mr. Obama in 2008 and endorsed George W. Bush in 2000 and 2004.

The article made brief mention of Mr. Obama's handling of the economy — arguing that it minimized long-term damage from the 2008 financial meltdown — but most of its words were spent accusing Mr. Romney of betraying his record as a bipartisan governor and successful businessman in an effort to cater to right-wing Republicans and wealthy donors.

While Utah is a majority-Republican state, its capital city of Salt Lake is considered largely left-leaning.

That would be surprising to me if they did. They’ve long been anti-LDS, and fairly left-leaning.

Thee was an ownership change recently. Some hedge fund owns it now. But the editorial board has long been lefty.

Ouch!

That's telling it like it is.

The Tribune was always considered the “Gentile” paper. The Deseret News was the LDS newspaper.

I wonder how many people under the age of thirty-five even read a newspaper or know what one is. Think about what newspapers once were and what they are today.I think in twenty years or so they won’t even exist anymore.

They also endorsed Obama in 2008. I can’t find it, but I’m guessing they endorsed Clinton back in 1996 as well.

This whole thing smells like an Obama-campaign orchestration. “Look everybody! A paper from te heart of Mormon country endorsed Obama over Romney! Wow! Romney’s campaign must be falling apart!” (No mention of the fact that the rag has leaned left in recent years and endorsed Obama four years ago.)

As SLC Tribune will find out, it can really matter to the newspaper’s revenue. They have probably enhanced their demise compared to other newspapers.

Like saying Benghazi was a 'protest over a movie' rather than a terrorist attack?

I was a twelve-year old kid with a Schwinn Typhoon bike delivering The Newark Star-Ledger(44 years ago, it was a liberal rag then and now) and a daily edition was 20 cents. Today the thing is a buck. So is The New York Post($1.25 Saturday,$1.50 on Sunday) and The New York Slimes is $2.50 daily. Who wants to pay that much for news that is already two to three days old while the thing is being printed? I think the only reason people buy newspapers is to do the Suduku puzzle.

They still have newspapers? I would love to see one of those, remember them from my youth. They told you about the news that happened yesterday, about as good as it got before the internet.

(I am sort of kidding here)

While Utah is a majority-Republican state, its capital city of Salt Lake is considered largely left-leaning.

It is a.) the seat of government and b.) the home of the state university.

Thus, it is Madison, it is Austin, it is Columbus.

I.e., liberal...to the gills.

It’s all a matter of spelling in Utah. The Mormons will vote for Romney the morons will vote for 0bama.

I have read that Salt Lake City proper, as opposed to the metro area, is now majority non-Mormon. The Mayor is a far left Democrat and there is a culture among some subgroups of thumbing one’s nose at the LDS church.

How does such a left-leaning newspaper survive in Utah?

Speaking of Utah... how is the wonderful Mayor Mia Love doing in her Congressional race vs. Jim Matheson?

There are enough lefties and Mormon-haters that it does a brisk business. That, plus its distribution and classifieds are joined together with that of the Church-owned paper, the Deseret News. That keeps their costs down.

Last I heard, Love had an edge over Matheson, which is unheard of in this state. The Matheson name is well-known and respected. Matheson is running LOTS of negative ads against Love, so we’ll see.

She’s not in my district. I’m in Jason Chaffetz’ district.

That's a good way of looking at it. That's exactly what it is: A liberal enclave surounded by a vast ocean of conservatives.
