Life in Uruguay: legal abortion and pot dealing
CBS News ^ | October 21, 2012

MONTEVIDEO, Uruguay — Uruguayans used to call their country the Switzerland of Latin America, but its faded grey capital seems a bit more like Amsterdam now that its congress has legalized abortion and is drawing up plans to sell government-grown marijuana.

Both measures would be unthinkable in many other countries. Cuba is the only other nation in the region that make first-trimester abortions accessible to all women, and no country in the world produces and sells pot for drug users to enjoy.

I live in Uruguay. Never ever come here. It’s horrible. First welfare state of Latin America, and you can tell!

They have pot and abortions not because they want more freedom but because they know those measures will lead to more dependency on government.

Really?

I had great hopes of visiting your country for tourism.

We are planning a southern cone tour, with trips to Southern Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina and Chile

We have heard good things about Monte Video as well as your beaches.

Would you say it is worth a week of visit time?

I feel like Uruguay and Argentina are coming to us. Populist/Socialist/collectivist politicians, over-spending and stupidly regulating, stealing power from the states and local governments, destroying the currency with money printing, and stoking class welfare while society declines

I feel that the USA will look much more like Argentina in the future.

How long will it be before their consulates begin to do abortions?

Since it is their soil, there is no broken US law

I would recommend Punta del Este, it has some lovely beaches. I live in Montevideo, but we are dealing with violence (the drug problem). If you're into history, you might like Colonia del Sacramento.

I know tourists like it, it's hard to live here though.... Specially when you're a conservative...

Do they eat pizza there? If so, sales will skyrocket!

Studies have shown eight out of ten pot smokers prefer pizza to any other food (when high). Or something like that.../s

I am investing in sturgeon/caviar farming near Montevideo.

The lack of ridiculous drug regulations and Nanny Staters give the place a chance. Once the Nanny Staters and all their good intentions show up its all over.
