Scientists convicted of manslaughter for failing to warn of earthquake
Manchester Guardian ^ | Monday 22 October 2012 14.05 EDT | (Associated Press)

An Italian court convicted seven scientists and experts of manslaughter on Monday for failing to adequately warn citizens before an earthquake struck L'Aquila in central Italy in 2009, killing more than 300 people.

The court in L'Aquila sentenced the defendants to six years in prison. Each is a member of the country's Grand Commission on High Risks. …

Scientists worldwide had decried the trial as ridiculous, contending that science has no reliable way to predict earthquakes.

Among those convicted were some of Italy's most prominent and internationally respected seismologists and geological experts, including Enzo Boschi, former head of the country's Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology. "I am dejected, desperate," Boschi said after the verdict. "I thought I would have been acquitted. I still don't understand what I was convicted of." …

This is a twisted verdict. Reflects the twisted society there.

Sadly misplaced priorities. This comes not long after an asbestos factory owner got 20 years. On the other hand, some Red Brigades terrorists got just 20 to 25 years. Another notorious bank robber and killer from the 1970s, Renato Vallanzasca, is out on a work furlough program.

Thanks for the update.

I just hope THEY realize the consequences of such verdict.

WOW Imagine how they would treat Christ if he walked into the middle of that!

The science community has the gall to have spent the past twenty five years pronouncing on global warming with final authority so why should they get away with not being able to predict earthquakes?

And the captain that sunk the cruise ship is suing for his job back. Welcome to Italy!

So they are doing ex post facto convictions too. Sounds like burning at the stake might not be too far behind.

And they rebuilt in the exact same location as the earthquake. I’ll save them the trouble. There will be another earthquake in the exact same place in the next 100 years.

Do they convict weather forecasters for not predicting storms? It rained and spoiled my picnic. You go to jail. Sorry. The warnings or lack of them are on a “use at your own risk” basis.

Do they convict forecasters for a warning that does not materialize? Do they get a suspended sentence?

All earthquake scientists should go on strike and refuse to say anything until these idiotic convictions are rescinded.

It’s not really that twisted. If “scientists” insist on taking control of our lives and fortunes based on their prognostications on issues such as “Global Warming”, then they better be prepared to take the heat when they are wrong!?

This is like having a bunch of people standing ona freeway, then convicting somebody else for their deaths who was trying to figure out the timing of the traffic lights.

Scientists want to be the West’s secular all knowing gods...so here it is, god, fix everything.

Pretending to be the know-it-all gods in life, may not be such a great idea. Remove socialism and atheist (Marxism) activism from science. Go back to being mere mortals who don’t know everything about everything.

:: Do they convict weather forecasters for not predicting storms? ::

Too little, too late. Obamugabe could have sued TWC for inaccurately forecasting rain and forcing him to retreat to his smaller venue during the DNC.

SCOTUS wold have upheld citing “precedent in international law”.

Exactly what I was thinking. Should open the way to convict judges and politicians of every stripe when they fail to anticipate and safeguard the public against the ill/disastrous effects of their decisions, rules and regulations.

Whereas I think this trial is egregious, I have to agree with your premise. I don’t know about Italy, but in the US there are way too many liberals among scientists - especially at the University level. You live by the sword, you die by the sword.

Of course they won’t persecute the anti-DDT scientists for genocide either.

Should open the way to convict judges and politicians

But it also means they will implement MORE rules and regulations to cover their butts...................
