Former U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell on Thursday endorsed Barack Obama in his bid for re-election, citing the Democratic president's efforts to wind down the war in Afghanistan and tackling terrorism.

"And so I think we ought to keep on the track that we are on," the Republican, who also backed Obama in 2008, told "CBS This Morning."

Powell has been putting out signals that he thinks Romney’s foreign policy team is stocked with too many “NeoCons”.

Who knew Colin had such a problem with the Joooooooooooos?

Since Colin Powell has so many military friends, one would have to suppose that Powell endorses this too, don’t ya think?

Colin, Colin, say it aint so!
He should be drummed out of the GOP for this action and be turned into a political outcast. Race trumps all—I thought he was beyond this—after the years of incompetence, Benghazi, the Gas prices, etc... What have you been doing Colin? What country have you been in? France?

Good article on COMPROMISE!

On Political Compromise

It's been a week where the Bush-wing Republicans have been speaking out once again for the need to compromise and how the "new" Republican party couldn't nominate people like Ronald Reagan or George H.W. Bush. I speak primarily of course, of Colin Powell and Jeb Bush and their thinly veiled disparagement of us Tea Party patriots.

Let us take a brief history lesson, shall we?

In 2006, Republicans were thrown out in a big way from Congress, losing control of both the House and the Senate. The federal deficits had grown from the end of the Newt Gingrich era in 1999 of a thirty-five year low 17 billion dollars to over 500 billion. The people were sick of the spending, the growth in government, and threw the Republican majorities out, looking for a change.

In 2007 the Democrats under Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid took over and the 2007 fiscal deficit doubled, to over a trillion dollars. And George W. Bush, being the typical namesake of his wing of the Republican party, didn't fight against this doubled deficit. Instead of taking a hard line stance and vetoing this outrage, he compromised and signed it instead. This wasn't exactly the change the voters had been looking for.

In 2008 Barack Obama was elected President, giving full control of the elected branches of government to the Democrats. The fiscal deficit that year nearly doubled again and was 1.8 trillion dollars. This included the continued bailouts of the UAW, and failed stimulus, all signed by Obama.

In 2009 the health care fiasco took place. The Affordable Care act ("ObamaCare") was rammed through the House and Senate with no Republican support and nearly two-thirds of the public against it. So much for compromise, eh? The fiscal deficit that year was 1.6 trillion dollars. No official budget was ever passed by the Democrats in Congress, and the spending from the previous year, including the trillion dollar stimulus was carried over.

In 2010, the budget, still carrying built-in baseline spending and the refusal of the Democrats in the House and Senate to pass a 2010 budget continued the built in baseline spending. In November, the voters threw the Democrats out of the House, and thinned their numbers in the Senate from 60 to 53. In January 2011, the Republican controlled House passed a budget that was deemed "dead on arrival" by Harry Reid in the Senate, and disparaged by the President. The Senate once again, did not bother passing a budget. The deficit for this year: 1.2 trillion.

We're still waiting on official numbers for fiscal 2011 since it runs until the end of September this year, 2012. But they're not going to be any better than FY 2010 since the Senate STILL has not passed a budget, and the softball leadership of John Boehner and Eric Cantor in the House refuses to shut down the government to force action. They instead continue to compromise with continuing resolutions that continue the Pelosi/Reid trillion dollar deficits.

So this is what compromise has gotten us. An out of control spending government, no matter who controls it.

The American people do not want compromise. They want a responsible government populated by responsible people. People who represent us, not dictate to us.

There's a reason why people like Senator Jim Demint and Congressman Paul Ryan are painted as "extremist". It's because they actually want to cut the budget. Not expand it, or just slow the growth of it. They want to cut it. And that said, several organizations have said that even Paul Ryan's "extremist" budgets may not be enough to save the United States from fiscal disaster. That's how knee jerk the Democrats and media are to any slowing in spending, no matter how modest it is. Incidentally, it's also why Newt Gingrich was forced out by his own party. He had successfully shrunk the deficits to nearly zero by refusing to compromise with Clinton and his own party, and disgruntled politicians in both parties were feeling the pinch of less money to spread around for political favors and votes. That, in Washington, is a high crime and ethical violation you know. And it's why most politicians and media types scream shrilly whenever they even think someone is serious about cutting budgets. Less money for them and all their friends.

Until more people like Demint, Ryan and Gingrich get a hold of the purse strings, and people like Pelosi, Reid, Boehner and McConnell are thrown out of leadership roles, nothing will ever change. But that's what primary elections are for. This isn't going to change overnight because we haven't gotten to this point overnight. Continued punishment of all these politicians that spend money that isn't theirs is required. Continued defense of people like Paul Ryan and Jim Demint is also required.

This is a lifetime commitment if things are going to be changed. The Republicans have been compromising their principles since throwing Gingrich out, and it's gotten us to 15.8 trillion dollars in debt, over 100% of our gross national production. That's the de facto definition of bankrupt, folks. And there's no getting away from that, no matter what political label you slap on yourself.

And when the fiscal house of cards finally comes tumbling down, the spending cuts will be immediate, and on everyone. There will be no social security, medicare, medicaid, SCHIP, food stamps, welfare, or disability. For anyone. That is what compromise will get you. It's long past time for that.

One of our greatest generals. A man who came up without means. A future role model for children, black or otherwise. A man who led thousands of troops. A man who people on FreeRepublic has as a VP choice to Bush and a future President.

It saddens me that he chose the color of ones skin over the content of ones character.

The only bright spot is Condi stayed with her core values and I am hoping to god that Allen West does the same.

These are the people that should be influencing the black community. Not Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson.

Funny you should bring up OJ. It was following the OJ trial that rumors of Powell having a problem with whites first surfaced.

At the time there was talk of Powell running against Clinton in 1996.

After the rumors surfaced Powell decided not to run.

Now I guess we know the rumors were true.

I am so sick of Colin Powell, he ran around like a peacock while General Schwarzkopf did the heavy lifting in Desert Storm. I try to be fair and consider that there might be other reasons for Powell to support Obama. I can’t find one objective fact that would lead a reasonable person to say we need four more years of this!

I can only conclude race is a big factor in Powell’s endorsement. A terrible shame, I’d expected more from such a great man!

What a waste of such a great legacy!

And on Benghazi, this whole situation bothers me more and more. Here we have a President who ordered military attacks on Libya without worry of the War Powers Act, but on 9/11/12, we could not get permission to fly in troops to help out OUR EMBASSY? Does it make any sense at all that we can have an Embassy in a country but cannot protect it militarily?

FOLLOW THE MONEY!!!

I agree with the racism standpoint but do not overlook the $$$$$! Powell became a special partner at Kleiner Perkins Caufield and & Byers (KPCB) a little less than 10 years ago. (He's now referred to as a Strategic Advisor.)

A few years after that, Al Gore became a Senior Partner there too and the VC firm began investing heavily in "green" companies.

Guess what. When 0 loses, there is no chance of Cap & Trade and the trillion dollar scam pretty much folds. I don't really trust Romney on AGW, but I know he won't force C&T through and I'm sure 0 would in a no-hold-barred second term.

But he was a great general, It was when the uniform came off it all changed. But that is my opinion. Personally, I think he was the fall guy when he went in front of the UN and no one from the administration defended him.

My brother is retired U.S. Army Sgt. and fought in VietNam and 1st Gulf War. Here are his sentiments on Colin Powell the first time he endorsed Obama in 2008:

“HE WAS A PHONY ( POLITICIAN ) GENERAL FROM DAY ONE AND NEVER REALLY EVEN SAW ANY COMBAT IN HIS WHOLE CAREER.

HE SERVED AS AN ADVISOR TO A SMALL VIETNAMESE ARMY UNIT AS A JUNIOR OFFICER BEFORE THE WAR REALLY STARTED IN VIETNAM AND THAT WAS IT!

HE ONLY SERVED THERE A FEW MONTHS AND WENT BACK TO THE STATES BECAUSE OF A MINOR SKIN INFECTION HE GOT WHILE THERE ( SUPPOSEDLY FROM BEING INJURED BY A VIET CONG BOOBY TRAP MADE OUT OF SHARP BAMBOO STICKS ).

POWELL AND HIS DEPUTY SPENT MOST OF THEIR DAYS IN THE STATE DEPT. UNDERMINING GEORGE BUSH’S FOREIGN POLICY INSTEAD OF BEING A LOYAL CABINET MEMBER, AND THAT IS WHY HE WAS FORCED OUT!!!

HE IS A SNAKE OF THE HIGHEST ORDER AND IS OBVIOUSLY LOOKING FOR A NEW POSITION IN THE OBAMA PRESIDENCY SO HE CAN REHABILITATE HIS REPUTATION.

LIKE BIDEN, HE HAS BEEN WRONG ON MOST OF THE MAJOR ISSUES OF THE DAY; INCLUDING NOT SUPPORTING GOING INTO KUWAIT IN DESERT STORM, EVEN THOUGH HE FOUND HIMSELF HAVING TO DO SO AS THE CHAIRMEN OF THE JOINT CHIEFS OF STAFF, ONCE THE DECISION WAS MADE.

HIS SUPPORT OF OBAMA IS NOTHING MORE THAN ABOUT RACE, PERIOD!!!!!”

He was the architech behind Bush 1 walking out of Iraq after 100 hours. When I was 17 I saw this as the second Weimar republic. We had an aggressor nation attacking its neighbors. We beat them militarily, never occupied them and merely walked away when they were no longer a current threat then left them with crippling sanctions. In 1991 I said we would be back there in 20 years. I was off by 8, but not bad for a guy who couldn’t vote. Why didn’t the Chief of staff see this?

I think what is great about Freepers is when we make a mistake, we admit it.

My comments about Powell being one of our greatest Generals was incorrect. I was referencing back to our first foray into Iraq where I thought Powell played a major role in the strategic planning of the 100 hour ground game.

As this event will go down as one of our greatest battles (I don’t think there could be much doubt there) It was of my opinion that the Generals that ran this deserved the accolades as one of the greatest.

What I failed to realize was Powell was Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and not in the field.

So again, to any military members or others I may have offended, (Myself being military) I do apologize.
