Despite real-time video, emails to the White House and desperate cries for help, our defense secretary says we didn't send rescue forces to our Benghazi consulate because we didn't know what was going on.
In a statement bordering on the Kafkaesque, Leon Panetta told a news conference Thursday that four Americans, including our Libyan ambassador Chris Stevens, were left to die without a rescue attempt by nearby U.S. military forces because there's "a basic principle here, and the basic principle is that you don't deploy forces into harm's way without knowing what's going on, without having some real-time information about what's taking place."
That would seem to sum up the Obama administration's assessment of and story line about the Middle East — it has no real-time clue about what's going on. Osama bin Laden is dead, but Islamofascism is very much alive, and to send an ambassador and his diplomatic mission into harm's way without so much as a Marine security detachment with bayonets is unconscionable.
Excuse us, Mr. Secretary, but your administration had a drone over the consulate on Sept. 11...

There was an interesting suggestion in a column on the Coach Is Right blog today: The Obama Administration had already jumped on Romney for his criticism of the apology by our Eqyptian embassy. They wanted to use the Benghazi attack as further proof that the Eqyptian embassy’s apology for the movie was appropriate, and therefore Romney’s criticism was ill-founded.
Seeing how the Obama Administration has misjudged the magnitude of other so-called Romney “gaffes,” I find this suggestion to be quite credible. Somehow, a disaster in Benghazi, if caused by that video, would be a weapon for Obama against Romney.
Leon is right. He lacked intelligence, and still does, and so does Hillary and O. They have their heads so far up their asses when they fart they think it’s fresh air.
I am racking my brain trying to recall any ANY battle in history in which the commander of forces had BETTER “real time information” than these dopes had about Benghazi!
Update 6, if true, begs the question: Who in the Sam Hill decided to schedule a rotation of rapid-reaction forces on an anniversary of 9/11? Such a decision wreaks of incompetence.
No matter though: a couple jets coming through and strafing, or threatening to strafe, the “mob action” this administration claimed to believe would have scared them away without further ado. On the other hand, if terrorists were attacking our guys, the strafing would kill at least some of them instead of allowing them to kill our men without retribution.
I believe that as slimy as he is, when Panetta is eventually put under oath in Congress, he will testify truthfully and at that time stop protecting the administration.

Well, there you have it — Obongo Bozo was, indeed, asleep at the switch!
IMHO, that is an impeachable offense.
HST, there are bits and pieces of two stories swirling around the Internet that the attack on the Benghazi Mission was to be the “October Surprise.”
The plan, so the stories I have read, was that the Ambassador was to be kidnapped by Libyan thugs and either rescued by the Regime in a military operation or exchanged for the Blind Sheik before the election.
That plan would have worked, if and only if, there was diminished security around the Ambassador. IOW, increased security on 9-11-12 and/or mounting the rescue mission after the attack began would have prevented the kidnapping.
With no kidnapped Ambassador to rescue or ransom, the “October Surprise” would have been a colossal failure.
When the Ambassador died, the whole scheme blew up in the Regime’s face, and they had to go to a deeply flawed LIE and cover up plan, which obviously had not been thought all the way through.
Having failed at “October Surprise #1,” one has to wonder what “October Surprise #2” is?
BTW, Travis, have you wondered why there were no OBAs (or weapons, for that matter) in the Mission “Safe Room?” My understanding is that the Ambassador and his aide died of smoke inhalation.

If you had a couple FA-18’s break the sound barrier over Benghazi and strafe the mortar team, I guarantee these weasels would have fled like scared rats. No way they would have stuck around.

My strong suspicion is that he heard/saw the drone(s) circling and illuminated targets “in the blind” hoping (against hope) that they had weaponry aboard, though there was no way he could know that for sure.

We can suppose all the evacuees were sequestered, debriefed, etc. Apparently none of them have been allowed to speak to anyone about what went on. Surely none of them waxed poetic about protests or videos, but rather had pithy facts to filter to our top echelons within 24 hours of their escape, so as to provide eye-witness intelligence to the WH, DoS and our pathetic UN ambassador!
No, the surviving Benghazi staff and potentially other Annex operatives have been purposely handled in such a way as to keep to the top dogs' lies from being exposed, which further shows the administration's conspiracy and mendacity.

My gut assessment completely agrees with your post here. The 20,000 or thereabouts MANPADS given to “Libyan rebels” during the “arab spring” in Libya is almost certainly the dead body in this mystery.
I recall that during this arming of Libyan rebels many of us here at FR were quite angry and cautioning about the foolhardiness of that action since it was clear that AlQ was clearly part of the “rebels”. I am getting more confident that we were accurate, unfortunately.
Again, this is something that the administration does not dare to breath a word about.
I had a “what did he say” moment the other day on Fox News, when O’Reilly made a statement giving Panetta credit as a good and honest man. Did O’Reilly forget this was Clinton’s Chief of Staff?
