Axelrod downplays polls, touts Obama early-voting edge
By Alexandra Jaffe - 10/28/12 09:36 AM ET

A top adviser to President Obama's reelection campaign on Sunday dismissed polls showing Obama lagging GOP candidate Mitt Romney as not reflective of reality.

Speaking on CNN's State of the Union, David Axelrod said that recent polls of the race that show Romney with an edge nationally, buoyed by a higher percentage of Americans who believe the Republican nominee would better handle the economy, contradicted what the president’s team is seeing on the ground.

"In that particular poll, Candy, that may be the case, but in reality that's not the case," Axelrod said, rejecting the findings of one such survey.

Axelrod said the polls had failed to capture the president’s strength in early voting.

"If you look at what is going on around the country, the flood of early voting that's going on all over this country very much in our favor, I think people know what the reality is," he said.

Recent polls, with a little over a week until election day, have shown Romney with a slight edge nationally, but the two candidates statistically tied in most of the battleground states which will determine the outcome of the race.

Axelrod said that the Obama campaign had prepared for such a scenario, and that the likelihood of a close race this late in the game was part of the reason they had made such a strong push for early votes.

"We built our campaign and our organization for this very close race, and we're very confident in where we are now and where we're going to be on November 6th," he said.

Imagine the abuse a GOP campaign manager would take from reporters if he said the same thing in the same circumstances.

I talked to a guy who is working at the office during early voting and asked him if he was inundated with Obama voters or if the voters were talking at all about their intentions. Our county is roughly 50 50 but I thought the libs would be thick in early voting and was concerned because he said turnout was huge.

To my surprise- pleasant surprise- he said only about a third of the people in line were keeping quiet and couldn't tell which way they were leaning but the other 2/3 were making no secret they wanted Obama out.

“...we’re very confident in where we are now and where we’re going to be on November 6th,” he said.

We know where you’re going to be on November 6th, too, we just don’t want you there after January 21.

There is a lot of talk coming out of the Obama campaign about “reality”

Cutter said it today, now Alexrod said it ....

I guess they are pushing their version of it since the actual facts on the ground is bumping into the truth....

Obama is starting to slip badly and they can not face that truth yet...

What early voting advantage? Obama is getting dogwhipped, and it was blatantly obvious at the polling stations I’ve seen.

Axelrod downplays polls, touts Obama early-voting edge then teary-eyed and with that certain far-away look of recalling a long lost hero Alexrod said with feelings of great reverence, I consider it completely unimportant who . . . will vote, or how; but what is extraordinarily important is this — who will count the votes, and how.

Source of Alexrod's hero, Joseph "Things just got out of hand" Stalin quote

I think what they base it on is voter registration. They assume that if a self identified democrat asked for an early voting ballot then they are voting democratic because that is historically been the case.

I am not so sure that is true this election. If Obama loses even 10% or 15% democratic vote - democrats who vote for Romney then he is toast.

That said, I will not feel good about this until Obama has lost, Romney is re-elected in 2016.

It is going to be a 50 year fight to get the US back from the hands of evil leftist.

We are already seeing several examples of it.

Alexrod assumes a dem early vote is a Obama vote....

I would not be so sure of that.....lots of dems are not liberals... Just been dems their entire lives....doesn’t make them stupid enough to vote for Obama again...

I am sure a early GOP vote is a Romney vote....

If Romney were down in the national polls as much as BO, we would all know it was over no matter what Ohio says. BO is begging his “folks” to vote early because he is probably scared to death of what is going to come out about Benghazi.

If all was right in the world obama would be saying to Axelrod “You better get me re-elected! If I lose we’re both going to be hanged!”
