Al Gore calls Sandy a ‘disturbing sign of things to come,’ urges climate action By Ben Geman - 10/30/12 02:15 PM ET

Al Gore said Tuesday that Hurricane Sandy is a “disturbing sign of things to come” in a warming world and should prompt action to curb greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuels.

“We must heed this warning and act quickly to solve the climate crisis. Dirty energy makes dirty weather,” the former vice president said in a statement on his website.

Gore cited Sandy, which slammed ashore late Monday, and smaller-scale flooding in his hometown of Nashville two years ago, noting “both storms were strengthened by the climate crisis.”

“Scientists tell us that by continually dumping 90 million tons of global warming pollution into the atmosphere every single day, we are altering the environment in which all storms develop. As the oceans and atmosphere continue to warm, storms are becoming more energetic and powerful,” he said.

Gore also said that as Sandy approached the East Coast, it drew power from abnormally warm coastal waters and that the storm surge was worsened by sea-level rise.

“Scientists tell us that if we do not reduce our emissions, these problems will only grow worse,” he said.

Environmentalists and a number of scientists, as Sandy menaced the East Coast, have highlighted the nexus between global warming and extreme weather such as heat waves, droughts and powerful storms. (E2-Wire has more on that here.)

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) also sees the hand of climate change in Sandy, a storm that caused widespread flooding, power outages and a number of deaths in the Empire State.

“Anyone who says there's not a dramatic change in weather patterns I think is denying reality,” Cuomo said at a press conference Tuesday.

Cuomo said officials must take into account the new reality of “extreme weather patterns,” and that he recently told President Obama “we have a 100-year flood every two years now.”

“There is no weather pattern that could shock me at this point,” he said.

Cuomo said in the late-morning press conference that 15 people in the state had been killed in the “catastrophic” storm, and predicted the tally would rise.

Nearly two million customers are without power in New York state, according to an Energy Department report Tuesday morning, including what Cuomo said were 90 percent of residents on Long Island.

The storm created major flooding in New York City, where the stormwater poured into the subway system, shutting it down. “The damage to the tracks, tunnels that are under water, is unlike this city has seen in decades, if ever,” Cuomo said.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg said parts of the subway system would be out for days at least, according to The Wall Street Journal.

I really think Gore has sub-average intelligence.
Listen to him talk sometime (sorry for suggesting something so painful!). Maybe Gore is drug addled from his college days. I remember reading an interview with either a roommate or a dorm floor neighbor who partied with Gore. This guy said Gore was stoned all the time! (I believe it, he sounds stoned now!) It's hard say there is much of a lively mind behind the delivery and the words.

I remember during the Bush-Gore debates thinking to myself, ‘this guy makes Bush seem to be Cicero!’!

Thank you for posting that-it should be required reading for all news reporters-facts are wonderful things...

Just an observation-why have we not figured out in all these 10’s of thousands of years that crowding ourselves and buildings around the shoreline of the ocean isn’t the best way to avoid a major catastrophe?

I’d like to see the hard science about this. Unfortunately there is no true science any more. Even the scientists have gone liberal and use their “science” to prove liberal dogmas.

Joe Bastardi said we’re in a cycle where more storms are going to be hitting the east coast. This will last for a couple of years, then we’ll revert to the normal pattern of storms hitting the southern and gulf states.

Funny thing is, in the 12 years that Al Gore been spouting his BS about Globull Warning, no one has asked him how to fix it, or when asked, he never gave an answer.

I was wondering who would be the first nutcase to try to connect Hurricane Sandy to "Man Made Global Warming".

I should have known.

Algore: the Archnutcase.

I went ballistic when that goofball — who calls himself a journalist — said that! Will someone PLEASE tell me why he has a job at FOX News? He’s sophomoric and a piss poor excuse for a journalist.

He probably didn’t catch Joe Bastardi explaining weather cycles on Hannity last night. Wonder if he has the huevos to have Joe Bastardi on one of his shows so he can explain it to him. Or Chris Horner. Or anyone who hasn’t drunk the green Kool-Aid.

The only reason it knocked out power is because the US grid uses so many overhead cables.

The main power outages in Manhattan was caused by flooding in company substations. Too much equipment at grade or below grade.

The Con Edison outages were roughly split between the company's underground and overhead systems.

Al Gore... I have visions of him and Joe Biden sitting around after the election, arguing over which one of them will get the nomination for president in 2016...

I’m thinking Algore, SlowJoe, and Shrillary all too old for 2016.

They need a dynamic young family man like John Edwards!

Gore is a theology school flunk out. I’m sure he’s read Revelation, or as he would call it “Revelations”.

Gosh, I forgot. There's never been a major storm on the Eastern seaboard. Better send Algore some money ... hmmm ... maybe I'll get an untraceable VISA card and make an online donation from "Osama Bin Laden."

“Will someone PLEASE tell me why he has a job at FOX News?”

I know! I’m bad about leaving the TV on, so he’s on by default. But all I hear are complaints about him, so I wonder, who’s really watching the LOSER! I actually think he’s blackmailing someone.

“He probably didn’t catch Joe Bastardi explaining weather cycles on Hannity last night.”

I read where they had a similar storm hit in the northeast I believe in 1888. But algore, shep, geraldo types don’t want the truth about weather cycles. They want their way and they’ll keep stomping their feet until we give up (they hope).

My grandaddy killed Marxists in Russia during the Lenin revolution. My father dropped bombs on Marxist heads in Germany. Yours truly killed Marxists in SE Asia.

I see no reason to stop the Marxist slaughter at Al Gore.
