If an embassy is hiding something, why should we know about it?

That's because they were not terrorists.
They were a multi-company military force under central command and control with tactical and strategic goals, all of which succeeded (except that I think the death of Stevens was an accident). Terrorists seek short-term gains by intimidating civilians. This operation was about as far from terrorism as a birthday party.
There has also been a huge SILENCE, since bozo's illegal action in taking Qaddafi down, about his billions in gold. He did not trust foreign banks and kept his billions in gold in country. He was also, according to reports, working with other AFrican nations, to switch to the gold standard. This would have caused havoc in the Western world, including the U.S.
I suspicioned at the time that the real reasons for taking him down was not only the rich oil fields but the gold.
I suspicion that is why France and Italy were so willing to jump on board. They wanted control of that pipe line across the Mediterranean. did they make a deal? "You take the gold, we take the oil"?
Why they total silence regarding the gold? Why the silence on the arms that went missing early on in the "kinetic" whatever?
One of the first media people killed, in the beginning of the action, was an acquaintance of mine. He was on his way back out of Libya. He knew who the 'freedom fighters' really were. Unlike our American media, he couldn't be brought to heel. (He was from the UK) and he was going to tell the truth. And bam, he took a direct rocket hit.
So - who has the gold?
Somewhere in the questions NOT being asked, is the truth.
Correct. The State Department's own website confirms this, as well as listening to State officials talk about the incident - only the press calls it a 'consulate'. The official embassy and consulate are in Tripoli. This was a 'mission', not a building open to the public offering passport services and such.
What's most frustrating about the lack of coverage of this huge story/scandal is that what little investigative push there is isn't even approaching the real story. This was part of a CIA weapons management operation. The exact truth is impossible to know right now, but it begins to make sense why an ambassador and others were left to die. The WH wanted to control a political narrative, and didn't want to risk having an illegal or embarrassing CIA operation go out of control. It wasn;t a 'terrorist' attack, by definition. It appears to have been an ambush to steal weapons and documents and kill or capture Stevens by a faction of Islamist militants. We double-crossed someone, and they returned the favor. The whole thing was too messy and someone decided it was easier to make up a story about Islamic protesters. That story totally unravels and becomes impeachment-level criminality if the story is truly investigated.
Whether you agree with what we're doing in Libya, Syria, Egypt, Yemen, etc, we are toppling stable leaders and deliberately causing chaos and power vacuums. We seem to be enlisting the 'help' of the very groups we were at war with. This is a very messy undertaking, and the risk of blowback is huge. If/when the real story comes out, including the 'stand down' orders preventing an armed rescue, this should be one of the biggest scandals in U.S. history. I fear it will not ever be adequately covered. Obama will lose re-election, and a Romney administration will follow the usual pattern of an incoming administration treading carefully with exposing secrets.
Both Hilary Clinton and Obama are done. We will never get the Watergate-style press crusade against them. We will never get prosecutions and outrage about our ridiculous destabilization policies. But they're done politically.

Also, I have heard that up to 20 other admin. staff were able to escape (I don’t think anyone knows for sure). If so, who were these people? How could they get out alive? Were they allowed to leave? Was it just a targetted hit on just the ambassador?
Exactly. This was a well-coordinated military attack using heavy weapons against what was a military target. Not 'terror' against some civilians. They went after guns, money and information. They succeeded. The WH decided that the whole thing needed to go away and be papered over by a story of protest that killed some people, something we've seen before and that the press and public might buy.
I think this potentially involves what is going on with Turkey and Syria, and I'm not comfortable expanding on that even on FR. This is potentially even more sickening, illegal and evil than it appears at the moment. Obama's foreign policy is completely at odds with what 90% of the country, conservatives and liberals alike, would recognize as sane or moral. Whatever charges of overreach or 'war-mongering' have ever been leveled at Nixon or Bush pale in comparison to what Obama has been doing. Our press is in a shameful state when 'waterboarding' of people who conspired and killed thousands of Americans is said to be criminal but 'kill lists' and toppling of governments under the guise of 'democracy' while using our own enemies as proxy armies... we get crickets. If a Republican were doing all of this, the media and the Left would be screaming for impeachment and prosecutions.
Stevens was a pro-Moslem type. He supported Jihadis in the overthrow of Daffy. He wouldn’t have sold out Obama over arming Jihadis to overthrow Assad.
Jeff Head is probably closer to the truth - the contractors may have spoiled a staged “kidnapping” that was intended to provide the Regime with means to release Sheikh Omar Abdel-Rahman, aka “The Blind Sheikh,” in a trade.
Another question...How did CNN get into that embassy to steal Stevens Journal when the FBI couldn’t get in there? And if the terrorists stole all the documents, why did they leave that behind?
My line of thinking has been trending in the same direction as yours.
What I know for certain is simple: There was something about Benghazi that the Administration (and the military) began lying as soon as possible and tried everything possible to kill the story or over-simplify it. What we have discovered is horrible, but still they continue to lie.
So what we currently know to be true isn’t the whole story.
Or to Hawaii to purchase a $40,000,000 estate.

I actually have a couple of answers:
It was 30-35 employees of the “Consulate” and the annex. Re: CIA. They were evac’d to the airport after the firefight, flown to Europe, and then quickly scattered into CIA posts around the world. None of them were brought back to the US to be interviewed or de-briefed.
A good Senator would be asking about them. No one has; not even McCain.

A Consulate is attacked and innocent State Department employees are terrorized and barely make it out alive.
When their plane lands at a US air base, the Press is all there and it’s a celebration of the survivors - total “Breaking Coverage” - just like we always see when something like this happens to innocent Americans.
Except, that didn’t happen. No one ever saw them return. No Press at any airport filling time about how much longer before the plane lands, &c. No interviews since.
Why? Because maybe they never came home. If true, why?

In the Iran-Contra “scandal” Reagan was getting guns supplied by parties who were not US government for the Contras in Nicaragua to fight a Communist government that was dangerous to Latin America and to the USA. In the Benghazi thing the kenyan is apparently supplying Libyan weapons to our sworn AQ enemies in Syria through Turkey. AQ is nowhere other than dangerous to American allies and to the USA itself. There is a difference in focus.
I think that we are missing the point if we view this as Obama vs Romney or Democrat vs Republican. This is bigger than that. Agree or not, I think our foreign policy and our intentional scrambling of the Middle East chessboard in collusion with Saudia Arabia and Israel has gone off the rails. It was already unnerving, and Obama has made it worse, more illogical and potentially horrible due to his peculiar 'sympathies' and goals.
Obama and Hilary tried to spin this as a protest. I think there are those like McCain on the other side who are spinning, too. It was not terrorism, either. What Romney chooses to do with this story will be instructive. If this story breaks open it will be about far more than Obama, as sickening as his actions and cover-up are.
Your question about those who 'escaped' is exactly the kind of question no one is asking, from any side.
