People in long lines in Staten island to get gas to run generators. State Police had to be called in to stop fighting in gas lines in Staten Island, other boroughs. NJ's Christie suspending laws limiting getting gasoline from out of state. No electricity in Staten Island, other boroughs; none expected for at least another week.
Growing chorus demanding the Marathon be postponed/canceled as it begins in Staten Island. The picture of clean, healthy runners in their expensive jogging outfits running through flooded, burn-out streets lined with destroyed cars and houses and refugees not what the Marathon big wigs want.
Obama mum.
People are suffering. This is not the time for a road race.
I read somewhere the NY Marathon brings in about $340 million to the city.
This is still so wrong in many ways to proceed with it.
I personally think every news service in the area should cease live TV coverage of Sandy aftermath and contribute those generators toward getting the affected areas back on track.
When I think of the human involvement in the marathon, I see so much potential for converting that manpower to help with clean-up and other things to help others get their life back to normal.
Much of the economic activity would still take place, since others have already come into the city. What if they then went out and purchased tools and other things that they could use to help out?
I am continually astonished to see what a group of people can accomplish in a short period of time.
This seems like an excellent opportunity here.
It sure seems like a very stupid decision by Bloomberg. That man is proving to be a turd in every sense of the term.
1. Whining is unbecoming in a Conservative.
2. It’s the perfect time for a road race.

4. Let the race, and commerce, bloom. It can’t hurt.
Please. People are suffering every day. Are you saying NY can't walk and chew gum? Given their reputation, you'd think they'd be offended at the suggestion.
If the hotels were open, restaurants open, and the airlines were running on schedule, sure.
Maybe each runner could carry a bucket or two?

Even here, some people just don’t get it. They think if the marathon is on, it will go as usual with a big ka-ching. In fact, people who planned on attending will stay away in droves.
Anybody feeling frisky enough to participate, ought to get into a bucket brigade to get flush water to people in high rises.
Bloomie better cancel or he may find that those who live by the optics can die by the optics.
It would be a good time for ANY OTHER MARATHON to announce they will accept your NYM registration to run at their race. It would be ideal if it were conducted at “about the same time” since marathon training schedules are pretty strict. I’m too lazy to look up the marathon calendar for them, but I’m sure there are plenty of fall marathons to run. Maybe they can even donate some proceeds to storm repair.
Just providing the water to runners is callous when some parts of the city don’t have clean water; in some cases they’ve been told boiling won’t make it drinkable.
Staten Islanders put it best when they said “we’re still finding bodies”...

They had an older lady on the radio this morning complaining because she and her husband had checked into a hotel (they had no power), couldn’t reserve more than 1 day at a time, and then were booted for marathon people.
It is just a bad time; every cup those runners down along the course is more clean water unavailable to people in other parts of the city. I don’t live there (never go there, though we can see the skyline across the meadowlands), but I think it is callous to do that.
Would they run the marathon less than a week after 9/11? The impact of this storm is felt by a much larger number of people; what happened to Battery Park City on 9/11 (no power, food, uninhabitable housing) has happened all over the lower portions of the city, including areas where people weren’t told to evacuate.

No way would I divert resources for the marathon.
All people need to speak up when they are trapped and hurting so others can learn what they can do to help out. There is a time to suffer in silence and move through hard times; and then is a time of emergency to shout out for help. :)
See # 14 and # 16; these people aren’t just suffering, they are being told it will continue for at least a week while temperatures keep dropping (and a nor’easter approaches).
