Survivors of Superstorm Sandy welcomed glimmers of hope as services resumed in some areas, but for those quivering in dark and unheated homes, relief was not coming fast enough.
About 2.7 million customers remained without power Saturday across 15 states and the District of Columbia. And some may be in the dark for another week, according to utility officials.
Frustrated residents, worried about plunging temperatures, said companies are not working fast enough to restore power.
"The power company sent us an e-mail alert saying we'll have to wait more days," said Pankaj Purohit, whose apartment is next to a marina in Jersey City, New Jersey. "We have already been waiting for five days."

What about the economic effect upon hourly wage-earners in the darkened areas? The ones who can't simply use up excess sick/vacation time? The ones who in some areas are already paying higher-than-your average rents & leases & mortgages?
Where is the MSM telling us their plight? Why is the MSM awol not only on Libya, but the aftermath?
They seemed to go from "prep for the hurricane" to "oh, it's only a superstorm, let's move on..." ... and these residents would love to "move on," but that's not a reality for many living condition-wise, transportation-wise, and job-wise...
In the Katrina aftermath, per the MSM, George Bush was THE god of the fed safety net who somehow failed to protect the vulnerable; With Sandy, the MSM, not wanting much negative press to go to any Dems up for re-election, are doin' the Wall Street (& the rest of Manhattan) shuffle...
Cities do not do enough to prepare for things like this. They simply can't.
People need to be more self reliant. My pantry is always overstocked, but not with the MRE stuff, but real food we use all the time and just rotate. Natural gas backup generator. Gas generator in the garage. I have 2 50 gallon drinking water barrels (from my Boy Scout days) that I can fill in advance of any emergency. I could easily last a month (provided the natural gas stays on. Thought about propane but took the gamble)
It would be tough to do this in a city. Just not enough space.
So perhaps it was a little premature for Christie to be quite so vigorous in praising what a “wonderful job” President Obama was doing on Sandy. Not to mention a little imprudent one week before a major election. I don’t begrudge Christie having a joint photo op with Obama, but he didn’t have to be so effusive in his praise.
It’s supposed to get to the 30s tonight there, with a real chill to it, ‘feeling’ in the mid-20s.
There are going to be more deaths from this.

Yes, a simple “Thank you for coming,” would have been sufficient.
The problem is that New York and New Jersey don’t have solar arrays and wind turbines like California. When the earth quake desrtoys large sections of the state, the wind and solar arrays will provide power not dependent on the roads and transport system
Staten Island is already a Republican bastion in New York City. They’ll be voting Romney for “revenge” against Obama and Doomberg and Cuomo.
I'm sorry they're still without power but the power infrastructure is a mix of components no doubt installed over a period of decades. It cannot just be "fixed" overnight no matter how many people you throw at it. Brings to mind the classic book "The Mythical Man-Month".

After 30 plus yrs in S Fla I was without power on many occasions and watched power be restored all around me.As a utility worker I was aware of how the local”grid” was wired and understood why the guy behind me had poewer and I did not.
Yes it frustrating especially when after a hurricane,trop storm what ever I was working 14 hour days restoring service for others only to go home and take cold showers and live out of a cooler and on one occasion for 3 weeks.
Some of these people in Jersey and NY are unreasonable and as always act like self centered idiots.
A week with out power is not unheard of. When you look around you and poles are snaped off,on the ground and lines look like spahgetti dangling every where than guess what,its gona be a long f’en time so deal with it or get out.
The fuel situation is another story:
1. I'm kind of surprised that the gas stations wouldn't have backup electric systems to run the pumps, at least for a day or two. I suspect some of them -- the larger chains, anyway; Lukoil, Sunoco, Getty, Shell, etc. -- may implement backup plans after this.
2. The anger needs to be directed at government. Who knew there were so many restrictions in place to prevent the easy transportation and sale of fuel? This is the "gift" of the environmental whackos. I notice that I haven't heard even one Northeast liberal complain about the "evils of Big Oil" for the last week.
