Gov. Cuomo says the Department of Defense will set up emergency mobile fuel stations at five locations around the New York City metro area.

Free gasoline will be distributed, with a 10-gallon per-person limit, Cuomo announced at a briefing today.

I took Governor Christie’s rationing law yesterday as a sign that things were deteriorating instead of improving on the gasoline front; this confirms my suspicion.

Who is paying for these free $40 per pop fill-ups? I know; I am.

The safety NCO in me just crapped bricks. This could get ugly if there's an accident. Fuel points are frigging dangerous.

What is the legality of this? DoD fuel is appropriated by congress. Is there provision to give this to the public?

So I asked myself to apply economic analysis to this: “Will this action shorten the lines?”

Hmmmm, what do you think—price control at zero will create excess demand. Hell, even if you don’t need the ten gallons, you’ll be able to resell it!

Why not just build a couple of windmills and put up some solar panels?

If obama can give them ObamaPhones, he can give em gas too.

The problem is these sites will be OVERWHELMED with people, whether they need the gas or not. You will see people taking the gas and reselling it a block away.

With 8-10 sites, it could be like Nigeria where the unsavory characters often blow themselves up by trying to illegally tapping gas pipelines to siphon off fuel.

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/12/27/world/africa/27nigeria.html?_r=0
Ige Oladimeji, a senior official for the Nigerian Red Cross, said his workers had counted 260 bodies by nightfall and had taken 60 injured people to hospitals. “We are still counting, but there will not be hundreds more,” he said.

Residents said a gang of thieves had been tapping the pipeline for months, carting away gasoline in tankers for resale.

Tapping is common in Nigeria, a major oil exporter, where many of the 130 million people live in woeful poverty amid widespread graft that makes a handful of people wealthy. One pilfered can of gasoline sold on the black market can earn the equivalent of two weeks of wages for a poor Nigerian.

But tapping also causes frequent accidents. In May, 150 people died in a similar explosion east of Lagos, and a pipeline fire in 1998 killed 1,500 in southern Nigeria.

The blast occurred after thieves opened the conduit during the night but left without fully sealing it, prompting hundreds of nearby residents to rush to collect spurting gasoline in cans, buckets and even plastic bags, witnesses said.

This seems awfully silly. NYC doesn't need mobile fuel stations. They simply need power to be restored to existing fuel stations, and new fuel supplies brought to stations that have run dry in recent days.

What am I missing here?

They needed one of those signs that says "it is against federal law to dispense gasoline into unapproved containers"
