As of right now, only 2,841,121 votes separate the two. That's 2 percentage points, 2 percentage points of the total. Hardly an insurmountable hurdle in future elections. That relatively small number is not an indication that America has turned against the GOP and is convincingly on the side of becoming a Western European style nanny state. In a growing country, Obama has yet to match Bush's vote total from 2004. I know more votes are being counted, but Obama is way off his 2008 pace.
Romney lost the swing states he needed by a combined 373,141 votes. Ohio -100,142 Florida -47,016 Virginia -112,884 Colorado -113,099
A mere 373,200 votes could have the Dems singing the same song the GOP is singing today. And they'd be frustrated over the loss of 9 million votes for Obama as of now.

If we look at all federal elections since the turn of the century, the GOP has won 4, while the Democrats have won 3. Hardly the sign of a dying party. History suggests that 2014 will be another victory for the GOP.
Sure there are problems that need to be addressed but to suggest that this is a death knell is going too far at this time.
The papers are full of columns today by liberal writers on the topic "This is what the Republican Party must do to succeed in the future."
My message to the GOP: Do NOT take advice from liberal Democrats. They are not interested in your success in the future. They are interested in your destruction.
Conversely, when Republicans win (like 2010) I never read columns by conservatives advising Dems what they should do in order to win in the future.
The primaries are killing us. Candidates have to say things that'll only hurt them in the general election to satisfy one issue voting groups like pro lifers (which I support but not to the exclusion of losing an election).
Ground game. We need an ongoing ground game like the Democrats have. Too much time to get it started up each election.
Diverse candidates. Cruz, Rubio, Jindal. Why are Asian Americans voting for Democrats? We should own that demographic - educated, hardworking, American dream. A young candidate that can go on Leno, Letterman, etc. and be comfortable.
Conservative news should focus on layoffs, the economy, poor jobs reports. Chasing birth certificates is a distraction and doesn't help the cause. People care about what immediately effects them and their family.
The vote was a status quo election. Nothing changed. Back where we were.
Democrats want us to implode or become 'Democrat Lite' which won't work.
This is a hard loss. We can rebound.
They already have dumped many Evangelicals, perhaps too many.
I’ve seen the Deocrat ground game. I was judge of elections in a majority Democrat precinct during the 2000 election. I only got the position because the Dems in my precinct were too lazy to do it.
The Dems were bringing people to the polling place, talking them into requesting their help, and then going into the voting booth to make sure they voted right. They were taking absentee ballots into nursing homes, and filling them out for the dementia patients.
Until the GOP matches this activity, except for the dementia patients, the GOP will lose the important elections.
Two Things:
1. Nothing will change unless the media becomes honest again and there is no chance of that.
2. The margin is razor thin at best, there is no conservative on the horizon that can properly articulate what they need to and, there are still a million illegals coming in every year. Not to mention there are a million LEGALS immigrating here every year too. They are probably registered as Dimocrats upon receiving their citizenship (700,000 per year).
Oh, and when a suspected Republican went into the voting booth to assist a voter, they sent lawyers to make sure it didn’t happen again and to make sure the Dems could continue to do it, and to make sure that my job was as difficult as possible.
I am ready to declare them dead, because they are already misreading Tuesday’s results, and will do the exact wrong things to correct it. Stupid Party.

They are now larger than blacks as a bloc, and 70% plus Dem voters, and growing fast.
There is an assumption there that "talking the pro-life talk" hurts politicians who want to be elected.
I reject that. I think that most Americans are pro-life, and I think that candidates who are very open about partial birth abortion and other aspects of the cause, would reap big benefits at the polls.
Our problem, IMHO, is that we too often try it both ways. Mitt is pro-life. He's also pro-choice. Okay, he just turned off close to 100% of the people. Sure, maybe some people would vote for him based on other issues -- but would there be enthusiasm? Anyone can look as his "position" on abortion and shake their head and say, "I might vote for him if he felt differently." It's a lose-lose situation because he's squishy.
Take a position. Be proud of it. Stick to it. Explain it. Sell it. The GOP can be either pro-life, or pro-abortion -- but they should go in 100% on whichever they choose.
And if they choose to be pro-abortion, I'll choose third party.
The Democrats have been working to this time in space for over 100 years. They look for the long term.
Solution! First, the Republicans need to begin developing a strong, nationwide, state by state machine.
Next, there needs to be common theme that runs through each of the state's machine, but tweaked for local conditions. Then the national machine needs to give the local machine all the support it can muster.
Finally, there needs to be some control at the primary level to keep the number of ego-centric doofusses who want to run for President out and only let those who really represent the constituents run. In that way, resources are saved and those who are qualified to run and win don't slice and dice and injure each other like what just occurred in the Republican primary race this year.
Democrats were minus 8 million votes from 2008. They basically phoned in a victory for Nobama. They had this election on cruise-control. Didn’t even work up a sweat. Insert your own cliche here...
I’m of the opinion that if Mitt went hard-ball instead of the soft approach he took? We’d have lost millions of more votes. Next time should we run a combo of Palin, Newt, Bachmann and a re-incarnated Ronald Reagan?
Sure. Lose by 15-20 million that way.
Face it. The Takers outnumber the Makers in this country. And we are running as fast as we can to catch up to Europe and their failed social and economic problems.

They were fairly pro-American during WW2, but I'd argue that is because of Hollywood's sympathy with the Soviet Union and it means they and our government had a common enemy in the Axis powers.
There is probably more conservative media right now than there has ever been. Is the mainstream media and entertainment establishment biased? Yes indeed. Is it a huge assist to the left? Absolutely. Is it ever going to change? Nope. The problem is the people who are attracted to fields like journalism, education, and arts are by and large folks that spend time trying to "empathize with the human condition" and those people will almost always be liberal.
Until the GOP-e brings a true conservative forth to run for Prez they lose, lose, lose.
Remember Bob “Let’s make a deal” Dole? How about John McCain?

The people how are declaring the GOP dead, are mostly the same people who make those same pronouncements after every election, when the party that lost, has to reexamine why they lost. This time, it’s mostly the liberals and the little faith republicans who believe that, the GOP is in trouble.
But, they fail to point at the biggest and best indicator about where the real strengths for the parties lie. The house of representatives is very comfortably controlled by the republicans, and a party in trouble would not have that kind of lead or control. To boot, the house is where one can make the claim the best that, “all politics is local”, because, most of that is where the politicians best represent where how the people feel. It’s the people at local levels who decide the direction in which they want to have the country headed, and, when it comes to the larger picture, meaning the entire country, if one were to take away California (as an example), then the country would be more conservative than what the re-election of Obama purportedly says. California is an outlier, and not indicative of how most of the country feels. California is the equivalent of having a Spain or a Greece in the middle of our politics.
Perhaps the best solution to the perception that the GOP is in trouble, is to, either vote California out of the union, or to just simply shrug it off and concentrate on not repeating the same mistakes of the last election, and we can for sure do a lot better than a northeast “moderate” republican for our candidate.

The GOP is dead, the republic is dead, America is dead. It’s our own fault.
No one ever wins by trying not to lose. We should have embraced conservative, moral, liberty-based positions, and did the hard work of convincing the idiots that our ideas ARE BETTER.
Moving to the middle, nominating the guy we believed “could win” (without changing any hearts & minds, or taking any truly conservative positions) is what killed us.
Good riddance to us.
