On a conference call with House Republicans a day after the party’s electoral battering last week, Speaker John A. Boehner dished out some bitter medicine, and for the first time in the 112th Congress, most members took their dose.
Their party lost, badly, Mr. Boehner said, and while Republicans would still control the House and would continue to staunchly oppose tax rate increases as Congress grapples with the impending fiscal battle, they had to avoid the nasty showdowns that marked so much of the last two years.
Members on the call, subdued and dark, murmured words of support — even a few who had been a thorn in the speaker’s side for much of this Congress.
It was a striking contrast to a similar call last year, when Mr. Boehner tried to persuade members to compromise with Democrats on a deal to extend a temporary cut in payroll taxes, only to have them loudly revolt.
With President Obama re-elected and Democrats cementing control of the Senate, Mr. Boehner will need to capitalize on the chastened faction of the House G.O.P. that wants to cut a deal to avert sudden tax increases and across-the-board spending cuts in January that could send the economy back into recession. After spending two years marooned between the will of his loud and fractious members and the Democratic Senate majority, the speaker is trying to assert control, and many members seem to be offering support.

Avoid the showdowns like the last two years? What showdowns? Instant capitulation at every turn? Funding the government with no budget?

I have been ALL my life for this very reason.
Always voted straight Republican though except when Dole ran I didn't vote at all that year.
The Republican leaders are tougher with their own supporters than they are Democrats. :(:(:(:(:(
The rank and file need to leave the GOP and throw their support 100% to the Tea party.
Mark Levin pointed out that the speaker of the house does not have to actually be a member of congress. I think we should call our Republican Congressmen and tell them to vote for Newt as speaker. Maybe we should tweet Newt first to see if he’s up for it, but Newt as speaker again would be nice to see. He’s a fighter.
One of the things that deters people from challenging the incumbent speaker is fear of retaliation if they loose. An outsider like Newt would have nothing to loose. There’s nothing Boehner could do to punish him.

Well, the FBI whistleblower went to Cantor, not Boehner. Maybe they knew Eric .... or maybe they thought Boehner wouldn’t do anything about the info .... or would go to the WH, or .... whatever. Did Cantor tell Boehner? I’m thinking not until AFTER he notified the FBI Director. Somehow, I don’t see this as good news for Boehner, makes him appear weaker than we know he is.
You got it backwards...Hillary was the big threat at the time and Rush wanted folks to cross over and vote for Obama to beat her, thinking that the eventual GOP candidate would crush Obama if he won the Rat nomination.
As far as I'm concerned it's one of the biggest failures in Rush'a career as a Conservative opinion leader.

There is a pretty real chance of that. The current debt and entitlement levels and trends put us at risk of economic collapse. If we lose control of interest rates, the debt payments will crush the country. Also, Obama's energy plans are going to cause extreme price increases across the board and shortages. This is a recipe for chaos.

Hillary was losing at the time, and Rush was trying to bloody Obama before the general election.

You may be right. If the Bipartisan Oligarchy has really, deliberately disenfranchised THE TAXPAYING portion of the electorate....there really is no obligation to continue to pay taxes as our claim to representation has been revoked.
“Direct” disenfranchisement refers to actions that explicitly prevent people from voting or having their votes counted, as opposed to “indirect” techniques, which attempt to prevent people’s votes from having an impact on political outcomes (e.g., gerrymandering, ballot box stuffing, stripping elected officials of their powers).

The issue of taxation without recourse to representation is of course the basis of the Revolutionary War.
Because prior to that it was about voting for Obama to stop Hillary, then when Obama got the lead it was about the opposite, as you stated.
It doesn’t matter. I was frustrated with Rush just like them after 2008. What I’ve realized after this election and the last 4 years is that this MSM is a lot stronger than we realized.
Rush was just irritated, like all of us, that the media chose McCain for us.
If you would have predicted all that is Obama today 4 years ago I would say there is NO WAY he get’s reelected. I mean come on—the guy got reelected with gas prices being wayy over 3 dollars a gallon for most of his term.
The MSM is too strong and they went all in for him and they succeeded.
