Skip to comments.Boehner Tells House G.O.P. to Fall in Line

On a conference call with House Republicans a day after the partys electoral battering last week, Speaker John A. Boehner dished out some bitter medicine, and for the first time in the 112th Congress, most members took their dose.
Their party lost, badly, Mr. Boehner said, and while Republicans would still control the House and would continue to staunchly oppose tax rate increases as Congress grapples with the impending fiscal battle, they had to avoid the nasty showdowns that marked so much of the last two years.
Members on the call, subdued and dark, murmured words of support even a few who had been a thorn in the speakers side for much of this Congress.
It was a striking contrast to a similar call last year, when Mr. Boehner tried to persuade members to compromise with Democrats on a deal to extend a temporary cut in payroll taxes, only to have them loudly revolt.
With President Obama re-elected and Democrats cementing control of the Senate, Mr. Boehner will need to capitalize on the chastened faction of the House G.O.P. that wants to cut a deal to avert sudden tax increases and across-the-board spending cuts in January that could send the economy back into recession. After spending two years marooned between the will of his loud and fractious members and the Democratic Senate majority, the speaker is trying to assert control, and many members seem to be offering support.

Agree. make sure everything that happens—the democrats and Obama own.
But NO to amnesty!
Doesn’t the GOP realize the NYT is the enemy?
Are peoples memories really so short that they can’t remember what happened 4 years ago. Operation Chaos was where Rush encouraged Republicans to cross-over and vote for Hillary in order to prevent Obama from wrapping up the nomination early. How in the world did that give us Obama?
Perhaps my memory fails me, but I recall Rush encouraging votes for Obama in the primary out of fear that Hillary was the stronger candidate.
I could be mistaken. I couldn’t always get Rush’s show. Radio reception had been hit or miss depending on the weather.
I agree. And we need to make sure we have good competent local and state republican leadership which will be decided in the next couple of months.
i agree...i’d like to spit in Boehner’s face but his response to ayatollah obama’s demand for a tax increase was pretty much in line with what everyone on the right wants- tax reform and cuts in spending yet no tax increases....
as far as the article- the GOP controlled congress has not been to stellar the past two years so i won’t get upset....its more BS from the NYSlimes...
Yep. I was mistaken. Forgive me, it’s been a traumatic four years!
Before you accuse Rush of doing something that led to the election of Obama, don't you think it is incumbent upon you to at least check the accusation for accuracy before making it?
Then we need to get a new establishment. Our local and state republican parties are getting new executive committees in the next couple of months. Time to get to work.
Amen to that.
You are completely mistaken. Rush hoped Hillary! would do some damage to obama, because he knew the hapless McCain wouldn't lay a glove on him.
This wasn’t a case of “making it up.” I was wrong in my recollection. I checked “Ask.com” right after your last post. I knew for certain Rush wanted to weaken a candidate. I thought it had been Hillary.
I don't care if third party candidates work, it's divorcing the GOP and sending them the way of the Whigs as they need to be. Conservativatism will survive and will flourish after we get rid of and then rebuild the GOP.
And how exactly will conservatism survive and flourish? How will GOP be rebuilt?
I don't believe that would run afoul of any of the Constitutional Amendments passed so far, they don't speak to the issue.
And the party's only just started.
i say let Obozo have everything he wants!
Then let the Obozo voters see what an Obozo world looks like.In 2016 we wont even have to run election ads.
Unfortunately, by the time it was in full swing, 0 already had sewn up most of the votes needed to win. I remember switching registration to vote for Hillary in the PA primary; but it didn't stop the 0bama express. In any event, we did not wind up with 0bama because of Operation Chaos. It was just a bit of fun.
I think the GOP should just walk out en masse when it comes up for a vote, NO BIPARTISAN COVER FOR BARRY.
The downfall of the GOP this year began when you had a dozen idiots running out there splitting the vote, while Romney would "win" primaries with little more than a third of the vote. Some of these candidates ended up dropping out and endorsing 2-3 different candidates as more of THEM dropped out. I think Rick Perry dropped out and endorsed Gingrich, then endorsed Santorum when Gingrich dropped out, then endorsed Romney when Romney was the only one left. Yeah, that's a real vote of confidence there. LOL.
All of these candidates brought positive qualities to the table, but someone has to sit most of them down and tell them to take a walk before the first primary is held. Truth be told, this GOP field resembled the kind of cantina scene cast of characters we've become accustomed to seeing among the Democrats. Herman Cain? Rick Santorum? Newt Gingrich? Rick Perry? Ron Paul? Tim Pawlenty? Michele Bachmann? Jon Huntsman? Does the Republican Party really need all these people cluttering the primary field? Most of these candidates didn't have a chance in Hades to win the nomination, let alone win a presidential election.
I don’t think the U S has four years left.
Useless, weepy Boehner has got to go NOW.
...and we should believe the spin the NY Times puts on this story because???
I remember Operation Chaos quite well. The point of it was to vote for whomever was the trailing candidate at any given point in time, so as to draw out the primary process and have Hillary and 0bama beat each other to a pulp.
Was it really four years ago? It seems like a long past distant age.
Lets pray and work for better days.
Read the article. The stunning claims in this piece are not sourced at all. The very vague generalities in this piece about reconciliation that have a name (Peter King) attached to them are typical post election boilerplate, and the quotes that take any serious position come from conservatives which completely contradict the thesis of the headline. They say they are NOT going to support a cave-in, and feel they have a mandate of their own.
For what should have been the last time twenty years ago: ANYTHING printed in The New York Times is pure crap that is only ever accidentally true, if even then.
Jeez, stop with the hand-wringing.
“I regret that I have but one spine to give to my enemy.”
“I have not yet begun to surrender.”
“Damn the constituents - full speed ahead.”
F this drunk cry baby!
They need to start harassing Boehner about Lisbeth Lyons and Leigh LaMora again.
” - - - avoid the nasty showdowns that marked so much of the last two years.”
Note to FReepers: I’ll supply the music, and y’all supply the mental image of the Sobber of the House Boehner doing HIS rendition of the now famous GOP CHICKEN DANCE.
BOUCK-BOUCK, Baaaaaack, bok-Bok-BOK-BOK! - - - BOK — BOUCK-BOK!
BOUCK-BOUCK, Baaaaaack, bok-Bok-BOK-BOK! - - - BOK — BOUCK-BOK!
Note: Applause is NOT allowed!
Screw BONER; and no, I didn’t misspell his name.
That’s what it really should be!
Everything but amnesty.
Operation Chaos’ purpose was NOT to stop Hillary. He encouraged voters to cross over and vote for Hillary in order to slow down Obama’s path to the nomination.
Watch it! Yer gonna make him cry!!! (snif)
I'm with you on the seniority bit on FR. This site would shrivel and die if we didn't allow newbies to join and contribute!!!
At least i can guarantee she wouldn't be crying and would be third in line.
Make Mark Levin Speaker of the House. There is not a Constitutional requirement for the Speaker to be a member of the House. They can be anyone. Lets get someone up there with a set of minerals.
To have a voice at the bargaining table, John Boehner has to be strong, said Representative Tom Cole of Oklahoma, one of the speakers lieutenants. Most members were just taught a lesson that youre not going to get everything that you want. It was that kind of election.
I’ve heard this before back in 2011. In order for John Boehner to do well, all the GOP House Members have to tell him in advance that they will accept whatever he comes up with. There is absolutely no logic in this.
To have a voice at the table? Excuse me, why would his voice be any less at the table? Obama can't push something through w/o Boehner or Reid and Obama and Reid can't push something through w/o Boehner. Seems to me it's a three way deal.
Most members were just taught a lesson that youre not going to get everything that you want. It was that kind of election.
Okay, so they think Boehner is now the Dictator of the House? Maybe it is Boehner that needs to be taught a lesson. I absolutely detest that man!
The primaries must be closed!!!
My letter to my Congressman (Michael McCaul)-
Please consider election of another House speaker- Boehner is a worthless wimp, and does not represent me, or any of my friends, and is crossways with the goals of the Tea Party. We need someone like Paul Ryan, or yourself, or a vast number of fine, Conservative Representatives. The survival of our country, and the Republican Party depend on it! Thank you for your time and attention to this matter. Sincerely, (Real name here).
I’ve heard that before, and I overwhelmingly agree with your choice!
Again, the primaries must be closed!!!
Note to Boehner:
Normally it’s considered bad leadership to blame your troops for a loss.
But then, if the troops elected you to be their leader, I suppose it is kind of their fault.
Seriously, the nyt waste of post.
