WASHINGTON (CBS DC) – A public health proposal suggests that tobacco smokers should be required to apply and pay for a “smoker’s license” in order to continue buying cigarettes.

In this week’s PLOS Medicine medical journal, two leading tobacco control advocates debate the merits of the smoker’s license. Simon Chapman, a professor at the University of Sydney, proposes that users would have to apply and pay for a mandatory license in the form of a smartcard that would be shown when buying cigarettes.

We have no constitution. Or at least there is an unratified 28th amendment that states

“The Federal Government may ignore all the preceding verbiage and just do whatever you think best.”

Makes you wonder what Barry Benghazi and his Nazis have planned for the “lady parts” of the “lady parts” voters. They’ll deserve whatever they get. They voted for it.

Who ever dreamed there would be a black market for salt, 16 oz sodas, smokes (outside of prison), a thick and juicy burger,...

I sure never did.

Enough already! This is Der Fuhrer territory.

We are being destroyed by political correctness, and that S needs to stop here.

Give me an application for one of those licenses.

I'll put it in my Weber kettle and smoke it.

Tobacco users are today’s Juden. Tomorrow, it may be people who choose to drive V8’s, or burn wood, or eat meat, or don’t donate enough to the Victory Drive.

Freedom is a tough concept, chipped away blow by blow.

You can’t wait until they come after your “vice” to oppose them.

Smoking reduces per life year healthcare costs because it reduces life expectancy. You would think that Leftists would embrace smoking and smokers. Smokers pay more taxes and have shorter lives, a perfect Leftist subject.

I’m a tobacco user, and I know it’s not the healthiest habit. That’s not the point.

Since when this this government of, by and for the people start telling us what to do?

They’ll be herding the overweight into healthcamps next.

Smoking, chewing, spitting, snorting and snuffing is none of the feds business. Which Article of the Constitution can one base this assault on?

I hear in NYC you can’t slurp anymore.

Is anyone still awake?

I’m going to open up a paraphernalia shop. I’ll sell camouflaged salt shakers, 24 oz. bottles and squeeze tubes to clandestinely carry butter.

I can see it. Set up several backwoods deep frier locations. Hire some good country road drivers. Establish some reliable connections with owners of sports bars, tackle shops and convenience stores. Carry a Thompson .45 in a violin case.

Next thing you know, the Anti-Smoking Nazis will make smokers wear Yellow Stars to embarrass and harass them.

Hmmm! Where I have seen that before. Oh yes, by the people who sent my relatives to Auschwitz.

They’re backkkkkkk!

I agree. Look, smoking in a public community room is one thing. Agree or not, it’s at least debatable.

This is just plain loony. There’s no gray area here.

Not no, but hell no.

I’ve not read about it directly, but I’ve been told that political correctness was a strong active precursor to what took place in Germany. So watching it here is quite troubling to me.

They will justify a smoker’s tax as a means to increase life expectancy. These are the same Yahoos who will sit on Obamacare’s Death Panels.

All non socialists/communists should be on their side. There is at least one statist here at F.R. who is all for taxing smokers into oblivion.

They'll tie in the 'smart card' to  disallow purchases after certain caloric limits are reached. Among other things.

Yeah, some people get caught up in the negative side of smoking and can’t see the forest for the trees.

I don’t support cigarette or liquor taxes.

Government needs to go on a diet.

Amen!

Still seems foreign to me that these issues are even debatable. Guess I was born in an era where the “norm” was driven by values and patriotism.

Hell, even democrats were tolerable when push came to shove.

The supreme court has stated that there is no constitutional right to use tobacco and so anti-smoking laws are fine. There’s a constitutional right to infanticide, but not to use tobacco.
