Labor leaders in Maine say the resilience of the Hostess workers on the picket line at the companys Biddeford plant, which is in the process of being shut down after the company on Friday said it would liquidate the business, gives them inspiration in the face of what they believe have been ongoing efforts by politicians, including Gov. Paul LePage, and corporate investors to reduce union influence.
Bakers union officials and their supporters say also that the demise of Hostess Brands Inc., which failed to convince striking workers to return to their jobs, is a warning sign for corporate investors seeking to squeeze more profits out of the working class.
Unions have been losing power for years, said Ken Rumney, a striking worker outside of the Hostess plant in Biddeford on Friday. This is an exceptional case. If Hostess had been allowed to get away with what theyd been trying to do, other corporations would have lined up to try the same tactics. Hopefully, this will be an example to other companies not to [try to] break their unions.
I think were the first ones who have stood up and said, Were not going to let you get away with it, said Sue Tapley, the strike captain on hand Friday morning at the Biddeford plant, which employed nearly 600 people. You can fight them. You can shut them down.

They are so powerful, they are now poor and destitute.
As Marie Antoinette might have said, “Let the eat Devil Dogs’.
The union members believe that "shutting" down a company is in THEIR best interests? Really? So, who is going to feed these OUT OF WORK morons??? I hate to tell these idiots, but THEY have just done more harm to unions than anything that any corporation could possibly do.
Okay, they made their point. I hope they starve.
Twinkies could have survived a nuclear war, but did not survive unions.
A union strike is more destructive than a nuclear strike!
It amazes me these folks seem to think they have achieved something great. Evedently they do not realize the owners of the company will not lose anything. It’s really only they the workers that will suffer. Idiots!
By golly you suceeded, you won the fight, now what idiots. But hey, you gotta stick to your principles...hmmmm.hmmmm.hmmmm.
We're very proud of your success, yes sir. We're proud if your proud, looks like we're both happy.
In a previous post there was an article indicating that the unions were blaming Hostess investments in Bain Capitol etc, for Hostess closing. WTF?
They’re “inspired” after losing their own jobs and causing the same misfortune for a lot more innocent workers?
They think “this will be an example to other companies not to [try to] break their unions???
Honey, your union done got broke.
Cluelessness on steriods.
This country is doomed.
Yep. The company that made those products will liquidate, and then that money will be invested somewhere else where money can be made. The union members, listening to the union “thug” leaders, thinking that they’ve done something great are living in a fantasy.
Pointing a gun at their own heads they ask “What are you laughing at, you’re next”.
No big deal the bums will have 2 years of unemployment and by then the Kenyan will have another government give away for them. Atlas needs to shrug and there will be no more government checks to hand out. Until then they will no doubt suffer minimal discomfort
Resolve = Putting 18,500 people out of work. Those union guys are brilliant. Just brilliant! LOL! Knuckledragging, union thugs are the lowest form of life ever found on this planet.
The welfare system is strong enough for now to enable this kind of behavior.
We’ll have to check on them in a couple of years and see how they are doing.
When the “brothers and sisters” of the bakers Union go hungry, loose their houses or cars, etc. I will not feel sorry for them. I will feel sorry for the rest of the company, including the Teamsters who voted to save the company and their jobs.
The union strike captain is likely paid by the union. This outcome was to the benifit of union leadership, not the members.
I agree, we should check on the strike Captain in a couple of months to see how she is doing......
I will wager that 90% of the union were betting on DumBO saving the company. However they forget the Moosechelle affect, they are working in an evil industry. They might, as well, have been coal fired power plant workers for all the good it will do.
May they continue to show such resolve in the future. Best wishes for future success!
In a few words the lazy bastards are too lazy to work and want to lie around and collect unemployment!!
Just goes to show you that you can’t fix stupid!!
“You can fight them. You can shut them down.”
So the goal is to shut down the company that provides you with a job. Apparently this is considered a victory.
Can people REALLY be that freakin’ stupid?
I think were the first ones who have stood up and said, Were not going to let you get away with it, said Sue Tapley, the strike captain on hand Friday morning at the Biddeford plant, which employed nearly 600 people. You can fight them. You can shut them down.
I guess this blithering idiot never read the story of the the goose that laid the golden eggs. Is there any hope remaining if our populace is really this stooopid
So, who is going to feed these OUT OF WORK morons???
Just in case that isn’t a rhetorical question, the answer is you and me re going to feed them. That is unless you are dependent on SS or some other government program in which case I guess it is down to me and the few others who are not dependent on a government check.
Do you think they would be so froggy without 99 weeks of unemployment insurance, food stamps, free phones, subsidized heat, rent, child care, and etc.?
Their “resolve” will pay their bills I’m sure. Or is their “the combustion”.
This reminds me of the Braniff Airways failure. After they shutdown operations, they had an offer that would have put them back to work.
BUT . . . . . . . . .
In order for them to go back to work, the pilots would have had to take pay cuts and have fewer flights per month than that to which they were accustomed.
The pilots stood their ground and said no. Apparently, unemployment paid them much better than sitting in the captain’s seat of a Boeing 727, 737, or 707.
The takeaway from all of this is that the union mentality still lives and, like a black hole, sucks up reason, intelligence and compromise and replaces it with ignorance and stupidity!!
Agree. This Union hasn’t shown that they care about any other employee other than “the Union”. Same line of thinking as the Dem Party/Libs. “Gimme mine, to hell with you”.
Evedently they do not realize the owners of the company AND THE UNION LEADERS will not lose anything. Its really only they the workers that will suffer. Idiots!
There now the statement is corrected.
Yeah, the union’s got them right where they want them. LOL!
Can the 5,000 collect unemployment if the company closes while they are out on strike???
Sure pal. It's an example to your MEMBERSHIP of how much you care about them and their families.
You and I via redistribution.
Unemployment benefits won’t come anywhere near replacing union pay.
Suckers.
Orwellian.
Sadly the answer is yes.
The unions fail to realize that there is no more money. The cost of salaries and benefits keeps escalating and the revenues decline.
Our public unions had to accept reality on this and take a pay cut and pay more of the costs of their benefits. The County had already layed off a quarter of the workforce and given early retirement incentives in prior years. Staff was insufficient to perform required functions without delays and stringent prioritization. We could reduce staff no further.
All but one union eventually accepted the cuts. The one union wanted raises and increases in benefits. What planet are they living on?
These unions just don’t get it.
“Don’t come any closer!” they shout.
“Stay right there. Not one more step! We WILL cut off our noses to spite our faces! We’ll do it! Don’t test our RESOLVE! Back off! We mean it. Oh, so you’re going to keep coming!? OK. Well so much for you!”
Snip. Lop. Slice. Hack.
Brilliant. And a good example of why pure “democracy” is nothing more than the stupid masses controlling others through mob rule.
Dear Labor Relations Expert Hilliard: if it was so profitable for the owners and management, why shut it down and sell it? Another idiot working at a university.
Can’t collect if you quit.
You forget about the 99 weeks of unemployment Obama will authorize .
Maine is also known for it’s benevolence in the passing out of EBT cards.
These slugs will have it made in the shade.
I’ve never seen “stupid greedy bastards” spelled U N I O N R E S O L V E before.
Fools, nothing but fools.
Twinkie Shrugs....
“I’ll have a “resolve” on rye with a cold beer” “OH that’s right you can’t eat resolve!” “Make that two beers I think I’ll them.” With as bad as winters in Maine get, maybe they burn resolve in their fireplaces. Oh I forgot you can’t burn resolve either. So sad, too bad.
The thing is, how many more victories can they afford?
Look at the union namde: “Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers International Union.” Confectionery and Tobacco are harmful to people and this union is for causing harm to people It serves them rite to be so stubborn and thus harming themselves, as they have harmed others with the products they make. I’m sure that Mayor Bloomberg will hold a celebration for getting those sugarry Ho Ho’s gotten rid of, although down in the hood they may not like the lack of Ho’s and Ho’s.
