Zoo Boise break-in leads to death of monkey
Idaho Statesman ^

Posted on 11/17/2012 5:05:28 PM PST by Gamecock

Zoo Boise remained closed Saturday as police conducted an investigation into an overnight break-in at the zoo's primate building that resulted in the death of a male Patas monkey, one of two at the zoo.

"It's very disturbing that someone would intentionally break into the zoo and harm an animal," said Sgt. Ted Snyder of the Boise Police Department in a statement. "We're doing all we can to find who did this."

Police said they are seeking two males wearing dark clothing spotted by a security guard at 4:30 a.m. outside the fence near the primate exhibit. Both fled, one of them heading into the interior of the zoo. Police used a thermal imager in searching the 11-acre zoo grounds but didn't find the person.

"I've been here for 15 years and we haven't had anything like this happen," he said. "This is very upsetting, obviously. This is a community zoo. It's unfortunate that we have to let kids know that something like this happens. Monkeys are always among the most favorite animals here."

Wife told me about this early today. Told her people like that will eventually move to people because killing animals isn’t thrilling enough anymore.

He said the two Patas monkeys came to Zoo Boise about three years ago from Tampa's Lowry Park Zoo in Florida.

Well, the way things have been lately, I bet the monkey knew one of those nutty Kelly twins and maybe Broadwell too. ;-)

Perhaps it wouldn’t have happened if the monkey was armed

“that resulted in the death of a male Patas monkey”

I wonder what happened to the monkey. It’s phrased a little odd. Did the cops tazer the little creature to death or did they have to shoot it. Perhaps they mistook it for a dog...

Boise? It was an attempt to “free” the monkey that went wrong.

Not clear to me whether it was entirely deliberate / premeditated. It sounds as if a person outside of the zoo more or less fled into the zoo and was being searched for. He may have hidden in the monkey pen and been approached by the monkey in an aggressive or otherwise bothersome way.

Those monkeys can weigh around 25 pounds and run faster than a human being.

Zoo Boise Director Steve Burns was called and said that during the search he heard a groan that he at first thought was human, but that turned out to be an injured Patas monkey barely moving near the perimeter fence. He said the zoo's veterinarian was called but the monkey died as it was being examined, just before 6 a.m. Police said the monkey appeared to have a head injury.

Man, people like that should be caged with a tiger.

I hope it wasn’t a sexual assault.

Gravely injured, but still alive when recovered. Died shortly thereafter of a head injury (specific cause undetermined as yet).

The Idaho-Statesman won't bite.
