NV lawmakers seek to repeal anti-communist law

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — A Nevada legislative panel has decided it's high time to repeal a state law that allows job discrimination against communists.

The 12-member Legislative Commission unanimously decided this week to introduce a bill at the 2013 session that would repeal a law that was passed in 1951 during the anti-communist fervor of the Cold War.

The law allows employers to reject job applications from communists and their sympathizers, and to fire any communists in their workforce. ....

Legislative staffers told the Las Vegas Review-Journal The law was passed during an era of renewed fears that Communists were infiltrating all walks of American life, concerns that gained the national stage with hearings conducted by U.S. Sen. Joseph McCarthy of Wisconsin. Thousands of Americans, including entertainers, teachers, union activists and government employees, were scrutinized and often accused of being Communists or sympathizers.

At the time, Nevada politics was dominated by anti-communist U.S. Sen. Patrick McCarran, D-Nev., who secured passage by Congress of a bill creating the federal Subversive Activities Control Board.

The law required the registration of communist-front organizations with the U.S. attorney general, and paved the way for states to approve their own anti-communist laws. Congress later abolished the board.

No Nevada lawmakers who voted on the 61-year-old state law are alive today.

"How could they do it?" asked former U.S. Rep. Barbara Vucanovich, R-Nev. "I am amazed we had this law."

Why repeal it?

You can discriminate against anyone on account of political party, no law against it.

Why do you think colleges and the media is 99.9% leftist??

It’s called “freedom of association”. They should be allowed to fire anybody for anything provided they honor any contracts signed.

Has anybody bothered for decades to do that? There have been presidential candidates for a long time running as CPUSA or similar and they get a small fraction of a percent every time around. Even Democrats know better than to vote for the spoiler.

We won the cold war. Then we surrendered.

33. Eliminate all laws or procedures which interfere with the operation of the Communist apparatus.

I have no problem at all with legal discrimination against communists. The basic beliefs of communists are un-American. Communists cannot be trusted in any position of authority or responsibility.

The main Communist beliefs are:

- All wealth is to be redistributed equally including money and property. The elites get far larger “equal” shares.

- All wealth and goods are owned by the state on behalf of the people, kept in shortage and rationed, to insure the importance of the state.

- There are elections, but only to select certain communist leaders from the communist party. Often there is only a single choice, and voting for them is mandatory.

- Communism is the best form of social organization, despite any and all evidence to the contrary. It is the best because it *must* be the best, and to disagree is a crime, or evidence of mental illness. This is an article of faith.

- The greater good is more important than the rights of an individual. The greater good is determined by the ruling elites. Individual success or failure is deemed anti-social.

Geeez. It has to be the unions pushing for this. They are the only communists I know of in Nevada.

Communism, by its very nature is opposed to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Indeed, it must destroy anything that opposes it, including anyone who publishes ideas and fact in opposition to it. It is evil.

"How could they do it?" asked former U.S. Rep. Barbara Vucanovich, R-Nev. "I am amazed we had this law."

Wouldn't such a law have been logical in 1951, when we were in a shooting war with Communists in Korea? I'm surprised that Barbara Vucanovich, a conservative with a good voting record, would ask such a dumb question.

I’d like to see this law stay on the books with a slight amendment...

It should apply to communists and progressives as well.

[of course, if that should become widespread, the ‘Rats would just take over some other word in the English language to call themselves]

Why are you surprised. The (R) party is not what it is believed to be.

(D) redistribute wealth in the name of "the common good" and (R) redistribute in the name of security and "passionate conservatism."

The fighting is over who gets to spend the money and for what.

For an example see the (R) grandstanding prior to the bank bailouts. After it was loaded up with enough pork to pacify the (R)......they voted it for it.
