Ex-Pa. trooper claims he was fired over Ebonics

PITTSBURGH (AP) — A black man contends he was fired at the end of his 18-month probationary period as a state trooper for false claims that he didn't properly write reports, and sometimes used Ebonics in doing so, according to a federal lawsuit.

The federal lawsuit was filed Tuesday on behalf of William Peake, 29, of Sewickley, who graduated from the police academy in May 2009 and soon after was stationed at the Uniontown barracks, which his attorney contends employs nearly all white troopers.

Peake was required to sign a termination letter contending he was let go for a "lack of solid job knowledge and basic police skills" and other "officer/public safety concerns" not spelled out in that letter in November 2010. According to the lawsuit, the reasons for Peake's firing have "no substantial basis in fact, and are not worthy of belief."

Affect is also a noun. Mostly used in psychology.

Ah, so, in other words, it could have been extortion, under color of authority.

Seems to me his complaint should be against the education system that allowed him to graduate or receive a GED without having the basic skills of proper English, reading and writing. All written statements, reports, etc., prepared by law enforcement officials can at any time be subpoenaed, and introduced as evidence in a court of law. That's why it's important that they be written legibly, make sense, and are factual.

I live in New York State, and can remember several years ago, when the State was offering minorities remedial reading classes at CUNY, for those interested in taking the Civil Service exam to become a State Trooper. The State was having problems finding enough minorities that could get a passing score on the exam.

"Affect" and "effect", as written, can both be verbs or nouns.

The distinction is not syntactical but lexical.

He would have resigned except he couldn’t spell it.

That be the lawyer, not the reporter. The quote is lifted from the complaint.

"Plaintiff was judge by different and more harsh standards"

"That be the lawyer, not the reporter. The quote is lifted from the complaint"

LOL! How unintentionally hilarious. I think I'd hire another attorney....

He claims he was fired for being black. He's wrong. He was hired for being black. He was fired for being stupid. I didn't know that was still legal.

Probably isn't.

Years ago, I was introduced to diversity. I had a boss who spoke and wrote in ebonics. It drove me nuts. I’d have to read papers multiple times to understand exactly what he meant. He’d say “pepper treater” instead of “perpetrator” and was easily confused with non-ebonic words such as “cistern” to which he had to ask what the sister had to do with getting water. He must have skipped several steps in the Peter Principal. A change of divisions brought a new muslim boss who announced on the first day he didn’t like me. Say what? That was back before I knew about muslim men hating left handed white women and especially those who knew more than them. A client had given me some watermelons so I tried to make peace by giving him one only to have him jump backwards out of my office like I had shoved a snake in his face. He hollered and wouldn’t touch it. How these stupid evil morons get hired, much less get promoted, is mind boggling.

In addition, there is no reason for the comma before “because” in that sentence.

HR Manager: “Trooper Peake, you are being asked to resign.”

Trooper Peake: “You are firing me because I am BLACK!”

HR Manager: “No Trooper Peake. We HIRED you because you are BLACK. We are firing you because you are INCOMPETENT.”
